CHRISTIAN OUTREACH DEPARTMENT and SOCIAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT: Director Zenaida P. Dacanay The Christian Outreach department thrust is the spiritual development through noontide prayers and evangelical programs.. In April 23 to 29, 2012, the Christian Outreach department under Director Zenaida P. Dacanay conducted a Daily Vacation Bible School in cooperation with Miracle Life Fellowship International at General T. De Leon, Valenzuela City. The theme is about TAKING CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT and THE IMPORTANCE OF NATURE.. The activities involved going around the community where trees and plants abounded. The river which is a source of life was studied The children studied the tings man can get from it and the things which can be seen and the things that it can give manking. Diredctor Dacanay concluded with what the Lord had done to save mankind, and led the participants in a prayer of acceptance. To celebrate the faithful attendance at the bible study in April of the 60 children participants a Christmas party was held again at the Miracle Life Fellowship Church. At this celebration, Pastor Dacanay stressed the significance of Christmas, pointing out the importance of taking care of the body, it being The Temple of the Holy Spirit. In 2013, April 29-May 5 our Christian Outreach department sponsored the Daily Vacation Bible School held at Ugong, General T. De Leon, Valenzuela The weeklong evangelism was held under the stewardship of Pastor Wilson Advincula and his wife Sister Gina Advincula who acted as Director. The theme was SIDEKICKS RELOADED. She helped the sixty attendees realize that when one is filled with the Holy Spirit he or she can overcome the works of the evil, one in his/her life. She also explained that being Gods vessel, no harmful drugs, nicotine or alcohol should enter their bodies. Pastor Zenaida Dacanay paid attention to the spiritual needs not only of the children but also to the adults of the community., taking advantage of their presence either as parents or as simple bystanders. She would pray for them and lay hands for healing and would have counseling sessions with them if needed. YOUTH DEPARTMENT: Dr. Florita Miranda and Dr. Ramona B. Raneses The youth is an important sector of our society comprising fifty one percent (51%) of the total population, Thus it is a potent force for national development which must be tapped to make them more productive and contributory to national progress. One of the important role that the youth may undertake is to be an active partner in the role of curbing the ills of the social vices. A YOUTH CAMP was sponsored by the Baptist International Church at their Highland camp site in Iba, Zambales, from May 7-9, Union invitation from PHILCADSA, PWCTU participated with the youth from Roxas District, Quezon City
accompanied by your president and three other board members and the staff secretary, spiced up by several interesting games. The lecture addressed the problems of the youth in their relationships their ways of resolving their issues, including their readiness to turn to forbidden and dangerous vices like cigarette smoking, alcoholism, drug taking which should not be the case. On the occasion of the National Arts Month. Bicol Arts Festival 2013,, the Bicol University Youth Temperance Union, in cooperation with the Bicol University College of Arts and Letters, Department of Speech and Theater Arts, participated in the Bicol Arts Festival 2013, Dr. Ramona Raneses, conducted a three (3) day Regional Youth Conference February 4-6, 2013 at the People s Hall, Albay Capitol, Legazpi City.. Focusing on the conference theme, ERADICATING S.A.D. (SMOKING, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS), THROUGH THE ARTS. Lozano In the middle of the year, on June 7, 2012 another seminar-workshop on FAMILY LIFE SKILLS was held at United Methodist Church in coordination with PHILCADSA, and Community Chest Foundation of the Philippines, Board. The objectives of the workshop was to urge the participation of parents and youth in building drug-free and responsible families and communities. There were five speakers who talked on different topics such as: Sex and Gender, The Adolescent s Reproductive Health; The Gains and Pains of Dating; Teenage Pregnancy and Drug and Substance Abuse: Threats to the Family. In partnership with the Mary Johnston Hospital College of Nursing, our Family Protection joined with our Children Department a seminar workshop for the youth and mothers of Brgy. Parola, Tondo, Manila. After the basic information and principles were shared with the group the workshop was divided into two sub-groups, the youth and the parents. The main aim of the workshop was to instill awareness among the participants of the ways of strengthening their family relationships. This was followed by another symposium co sponsored by Women Society of Christian Service of the Central United Methodist Church on the topic A HEALHTY LIFESTYLE this time Dr. Mirriam Calaguas, head of the Oncology Department of St.
Lukes Hospital ass guest speaker. Apart from the value of a healthy food intake, she stressed the significance of the healing power of prayer, especially in overcoming cancer. The activity was held in conjunction with the celebration of the Church s Anniversary as well as of the International Women s Month. The PWCTU was invited to a Feeding program for the Aetas Hill community in Bagac, Bataan by the Bagac Municipal High School Alumni Association The participation of the PWCTU was to give a lecture on the negative effects of S.A.D. to an individual, his family, and in his community. For the child or the youth or even the adult to avoid the perils of vices, he must be educated on their toxic effects not to mention their ugly results on the physical features of the individual The Aetas appreciated the information that had been shared with them. But even better, they expressed their desire for the general education of their families. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: DR. RAMONA INES B. RANESES International Women s Day was celebrated by PWCTU by partnering with Asle Learning School in Quezon City in advocating A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE: A HAPPY LIFE held on March 10, 2013 we had Mr. Santaner Iray chief trainor of Drug Check Philippines, a resource speaker. Dwelling on the obvious and not so obvious and toxic ill effects of the three vices of smoking, alcohol, and drug ingestion especially the latter, he also paid particular attention to women, young and not so young, as a very vulnerable target of pushers of the illegal substance serving on the effects even on unborn fetuses. The sixth graders and high schoolers and some PTA members listened in rapt attention as Mr. Iray elaborated on the subject. In observance of WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY, PWCTU scheduled a lecture form on May 31, 2013 in cooperation with the Union High School of the Philippine Christian University. The stormy weather prevented many students from attending however, we were grateful some braved it with some parents and teachers, and the discussion was able to proceed. Celebrating NATIONAL TEMPERANCE WEEK ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2013 we partnered with the Quezon City High School in a lecture-forum. Tackled was the topic HEALTH IS FUN: THRILLS ARE DEADLY The 150 strong third and fourth year students actively participated in the open forum plying the resource speakers a medical practitioner and an IT section head of the DSWD with a lot of questions, suggesting that they too were well aware of the issues of social media. This was followed by another discussion forum on November 7, 2013 at the Philippine Christian University at Dasmarinas Cavite, The whole school of 600 students plus the faculty led by their principal Mr. Morales were intent and very appreciative listeners of resource speaker Mr. Santner Iray of Drug Check Philippines.
This year 2014 PWCTU emphasized the significance of NATIONAL TEMPERANCE MONTH by bannering the theme: YOUTH FOR LIFE NO TO S.A.D. We partnered with four schools the Teodoro R. Yangco Elementary School in Tondo, the Payatas Annex B Elementary School in Quezon City, the Bethel Knox School in Sta. Cruz, Manila and Central Methodist Educational Center in Ermita, Manila. On September 12 PWCTU had the lecture forum at the Yangco Elementary School with Mr. Iray who has become recognized as an International Trainor and whose support with the youth has been proven time and again as speaker. He also talked on FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME DISORDER the unnerving hideous effects of the prohibited substances on the unborn baby. While the audience consisted of grade VI students and a few parents and teachers led by graders and the principal Ms. Eleodora Vergara, the topic was relevant because of the growing number of teen-age relationships. Thus they were enjoined to abstain from smoking, imbibing alcoholic beverages and injecting drugs if they wanted to have normal healthy babies. But preceding the program proper was a simple wreath laying ceremony before the bust of Don Teodoro R. Yangco, the philanthropist whose magnaminity prompted his donation of the lot whereon the school stands. A narration of the life of Don Teodoro was read by Trustee Zenaida Dacanay and which she closed with a prayer. At the Payatas Elementary School on September 13, Mr. Iray spoke to the students, parents and teachers on the YOUTH FOR LIFE NO TO S.A.D. with special focus on Cyber bullying. The general theme for the school was PARENTING AND VALUES FORMATION as the principal Dr. Delia Sibulo said, the parents and families were in much need of. The lecture was well applauded by the audience. On September 25, Director Filino Castro was the resource speaker for YOUTH FOR LIFE NO TO S.A.D. AND CYBER-VICE at Bethel Knox School which Ms. Li-Fong heads and Christian Mores vs Modern Behavioral Practices at CMEC during the 25 TH school anniversary on September 29. During those activities, Dr. Castro presented addition statistics on local and worldwide consumption and their effects. Especially given attention was the fast growing crime of cyber bullying committed against classmates and friends, seriously affecting the psyche of the victims leading them to turn to the older vices of smoking, drinking and drug abuse, and worse to committing suicide. So it has come full circle. Parents and teachers were enjoined and encouraged to make a conscious effort to monitor their children/pupils behavior so as to prevent the untoward consequences of addiction. SOCIAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT: Comm. ELSIE DE VEYRA On September 15, 2012 the Social Service department and the Christian Outreach Department joined hand to conduct a medical-dental mission in Barangay Lower Tibagan Ugong Valenzueal City. The professional services were provided by the
Valenzuela Medical Center courtesy of Dr. Mario Panay as well as by the barangay. A health specialist lectured on healthy values and nutrition and the harmful effects of drugs in the body. A team of student nurses from the Mary Johnston Hospital College of Nursing assisted in rendering service to the150 patients parents, children, babies who came to the Miracle Life Fellowship Center which served as the venue for the activity. The JAPAN WOMEN S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION very charitably sent their donation of USD1000 (less bank charges) to the Yolanda survivors of Tacloban through the World WCTU, c./o World President Margaret Ostenstad whom in turn coursed it through the PWCTU. Our organization turned over said amount duly receipted to Operation Blessing which is a Christian NGO that comes to the rescue of the needy especially in times of calamities by giving food, medical and livelihood assistance.
