It s everywhere. Drawings and paintings adorn walls as well as magazines and posters. Music fills the airwaves. Popular television features dance. Merchants use art to sell their wares with ads that appeal to the eye and the ear. Yet art for the sake of art or private ownership or commercial gain is fairly recent. Before the modern era, art was invariably tied to culture and culture to the sacred. For those of us in the western world, the cult of our culture has been, for the better part of two millennia, Christianity. Thus some of the greatest names of our civilization, Michelangelo, Donatello, Rembrandt, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and Wren, to name but a few, reserved their finest crafts for the use and work of the church. The inner expression of our being, what feeds the soul, is God given. Thus when it is shared with the world it becomes a kind of sacrament an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. Church is where art can find a natural home. This issue of the Diakonia will be looking at ways in which artistic expression does find a home in church. Learn and enjoy. Blessings, The Rev d Tom Henderson Warden of Lay Readers Fall 2014 This issue contains information of the upcoming Fall Meeting Diakonia

President s Message I can t believe we are already half way through summer! I do hope you are enjoying this time of rest and relaxation, although many of you will still be involved in your parochial duties. My contribution to the Diakonia this time, has taken a different form. I wanted to provide you with a brief update on many items that need your attention and participation. Annual Lay Readers Meeting 2014 The Annual meeting was held at St. Peter s, Birch Cove, Halifax, on June 7 th. There were only 23 present which is very discouraging. There were a few new faces however, which is always encouraging. Plan to attend these meetings as they keep you informed as a Lay Reader of what is happening with your Association and as well, there is always an educational component to the Meeting. Lay Reader Training Videos The new Lay Reader training videos are just about complete and are already being used by at least one area. It s been a long job, with many hurdles but the last videos are now being readied for use. Hurrah!! Dave Harrison showed several segments of the new Lay Reader training videos at the Annual Meeting and there was discussion and general approval. Web Manager and Website - A sincere thank you and a token of gratitude was sent to Don Eldershaw, who had developed the original website and guided us through the teething problems. Don was happy to have someone else take over. Dave Harrison has set up a new website and will be the new web manager. I invite you to visit and explore our new website at If you would like to have something added to the site, please contact Dave Harrison either through his contact information in this issue or through the website. Diakonia 2 Fall 2014

Wanted A Secretary - The Association is seeking a new Secretary following the resignation of Marie (Ayotte) George after eight years of service. If anyone is interested or knows of someone who might consider serving as Secretary, please let us know. Meetings are held four times a year and are currently held at the Church of Saint Andrew, Cole Harbour, usually on a Tuesday from 1-3 pm. This site is fairly central, but it could be changed. Fall Conference - Please encourage your fellow Lay Readers to attend the Fall Conference which you will find information about in the pages of this issue. It is always a stimulating weekend it s not all study. There is also fun and provides an opportunity to make new friends, and, you must admit, the price is unbeatable. Car-pooling makes travel costs reasonable and the location is great, plus a ferry ride (if you wish!). Annual Meeting 2015 The Annual Meeting for 2015 is tentatively set for June 6 at Trinity Church, Sydney Mines. Further information will be provided in the Spring 2015 issue of the Diakonia and on the website. Make plans now to attend and let those folks in Cape Breton who are preparing for our meeting know how much you appreciate the fact that they are organizing this meeting for you. Archdeaconry Representatives - We are pleased to welcome Lois Durant as the new Archdeaconry Representative for the Fort Sackville Region. Prince Edward Island, Halifax and the Valley are still vacant. What is holding you back from offering to serve in this capacity? Is it that you are wondering about the duties of this position? The Archdeaconry Representative is the contact person between the Association and the Lay Readers in their Region. Some Representatives have one or two meetings a year in their Region; others rely on or telephone to contact each parish. The Representative is expected to have a report in the Fall Diakonia

Spring Issue of the Diakonia sharing activities and anything special which is happening in their area. The Representative is also expected to bring their local concerns to the Association s meetings, etc. Concerns expressed at the Annual Meeting - Lack of attendance of Lay Readers at Ordinations and even the Bishop s Installation was noted. Lay Readers are invited (expected?) to robe/vest and process. With 472 Lay Readers, I would expect a least 100 to show up but it s usually fewer than 50. The Association has become somewhat fragmented over time and we would very much like to see it become more cohesive and a forum for sharing more ideas. We are an important part of the ministry of the church!! Let s stand up and be counted! Your sister in Christ, Shirley Williams Writing as a Form of Art by Victoria Henrikson The church provides lots of opportunities to be creative. One such place is in the preparation of the Prayers of the People. We are graced with the gifts of the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, the Book of Alternative Services, Concordances and many other tools to help us in creating prayers that fit with the scripture assigned for a particular day. I don t know about you but I always use the Old Testament reading, the Psalm and the Gospel when I am fashioning the Prayers of the People. I use these texts to create prayers which will fit in smoothly with the rest of the Liturgy. And, there are many other tools books, the internet, etc. which can benefit you in writing your Prayers of the People. Diakonia 4 Fall 2014

You may be asked to prepare a Sermon these tools will work here as well. In fact, our speaker at the Fall Conference on Prince Edward Island, Rev d Paul Jennings will be sharing with us many useful ideas to help us in this endeavour. Use all the resources available to you, along with your own creativity, and you will have created your own work of art. Another thought occurred to me Have you ever tried writing your own Psalm? Last Spring I attended a workshop at St. Luke s in Dartmouth on just this topic. Try your hand at this form of prayer using the Psalms as a guide. I was surprised when I had actually form the words into something I felt comfortable in sharing with the leaders and other participants. Challenge yourself to be creative with the gifts God has given you whether it s in writing or some other media. I humbly offer here the Psalm I wrote at that workshop. Happy Are You Happy are you who are filled with the spirit of God; Happy are you whose cup is full; Happy are you whose mourning is turned into dancing; Happy are you whose head finds a pillow at night; Happy are you whose belly is full; Happy are you who have friends to share your journey; Happy are you who are blessed with a loving family; And happy are you, if you share all this with others, And give thanks to God. As I listen to the silence, I learn that my feelings about art and my feelings about the Creator of the Universe are inseparable. To try to talk about art and about Christianity is for me one and the same thing, and it means attempting to share the meaning of my life, what gives it, for me, its tragedy and its glory. Madeleine L Engle, Author Fall Diakonia

What does the Eye see during Worship? by Victoria Henrikson Art is born when the temporary touches the eternal. G.K. Chesterton Do you see what I see? Do I see what you see? In our time of worship, my eyes travel about taking in many bits and pieces of what helps me to understand what the scriptures and the liturgy are telling me in words. I see fellow parishioners with heads bowed, eyes focussed, ears listening; posture that tells me they are listening intently to the word being shared. And, art is part of that which we see, especially those of you who have churches with magnificent stained glass windows to study and through what we hear from our choirs and organists or contemporary choirs and musicians.. When we stop to really see and take it all in, there is such an array of arts available to us our church buildings themselves, our altars, Stations of the Cross, our Fonts, our processional crosses, our icons, church hangings, chasubles, stoles and the plethora of banners some of which are stunning in their creation. These are arts and they come from artisans in the fields of visual arts, architecture, artists who work in metals, pottery and other media, seamstresses and of course, there are those who write the Bible being the greatest example of writings available to us. There are also the performing artists musicians, singers, dancers, actors, organists and people who play other instruments. There are many other areas which can be categorized as arts these are just a few from which we can learn as Lay Readers. W. David O. Taylor of Christianity Today had the following to say about arts as part of worship : What if we saw the arts in worship as part of discipleship? What if we saw the arts as essential, rather than optional, to the Spirit s work of forming us in the image of Christ when we gather as a corporate body? What if a Diakonia 6 Fall 2014

carefully crafted work of visual art enabled a congregation to see its mission in a radically new light? What if art in worship could yield a substantively formative experience? At the church in which I worship, there is always something added to the nave and sanctuary of the church to signify that the season of the church year has changed or that it is a special day in the life of the church. Hangings on the wall behind the altar; the linens on the altar changes; the stoles which our Priests wear change all of this and much more, alerting us to look for something happening during the liturgy stimulating our five senses. These also bring to our attention as Lay Readers the significance of what is happening during this time of worship. During corporate worship celebrations, we experience the arts as both acts of praise and tools for sharing God s word and love. As Anglicans, we value the balance of Word, Sacrament and Spirit in our worship. We have discovered that the Lord uses the arts, when presented to His glory, to add a richness and creativity to that balance that reaches more people with His love and grace. Poet Scott Cairns says people of faith have reclaimed art as a viable mode of discovering and performing the joy, the beauty even the exquisite ache of the life in Christ. I challenge you in your role as Lay Reader to stop and pay attention to all the richness of the art and arts which are available to you in your home church or Parish. You will be surprised at the priceless art just waiting for you to enjoy it and to see our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ glorified in and through it. And, hopefully, scripture will be broken open for you through the arts and help you in your preparation of the Prayers of the People and if you are asked to prepare a sermon. Fall Diakonia

I cons adorned churches as early as the sixth century, using symbols and images to share the Word of God with the faithful, most of whom could not read. Today icons grace churches in eastern and western traditions and in private homes. They inspire contemplative prayer and are an important reminder that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses the Communion of Saints. 10 Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness by The Rev d Tom Henderson And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 Christians worship a God who lived on earth and was a human being just like us. Thus the invisible became visible, the infinite became finite, and the ineffable became concrete. As Bishop NT Wright of Durham has observed about the incarnation, matter matters. Christ, by taking on human form, blesses our experience of the five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Our liturgies are designed to give glory to God. Words alone are not enough. Music enriches our hearing. Colour fills our vision. Incense, where and when used, excites the nose. We taste the bread and wine. We sit, stand, and kneel. We worship God with our bodies. The stimulation of the senses sometimes serves to focus us on what is really important. Liturgical colours, for example, are there, in part, as camouflage. Clergy wear chasubles and stoles of similar hues to blend into the background. Servers and lay readers wear standardized vestments so as to limit distractions. Similarly the recitation of regular and familiar prayers frees the mind from needless disruptions. Singing fuses our voices one with the other. On Sunday morning we come together to give our praise and thanks to God. The self ought not to get in the way. Yet participation is desired and encouraged. How many of us learned bible stories from the glow of stained-glass? Or doctrine from the pages of our hymnals? How many of us imagined ourselves in an ark while admiring the shipwright-crafted naves of our older churches? Likewise our rituals are fraught with meaning. Many of us can recall from the catechism, a sacrament is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. The water of baptism is more than a simple cleansing. Bread and wine offers more in nourishment than a mere wafer and sip. Anglican liturgies take seriously the ancient maxim, lex orandi - lex Diakonia 10 Fall 2014

credendi, the way of prayer is the way of belief. The prayers that we pray we absorb into the very fibres of our being. Given enough time our words and thoughts grow together. That s why our books are so important to us. Thomas Merton once said, Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. If true, then what we do week in and week out in church is art. Art expresses all that we hold dear: beauty, truth, and meaning. Our church buildings are awash in images and colours, carvings and statuary. Our choirs sing sequences and chords composed by some of the world s most brilliant composers and chant words by some of the world s greatest poets. Our vestments and hangings are the handiwork of the nimblest seamstresses found anywhere, our fixtures by the best woodworkers, our vessels by outstanding silversmiths, our buildings by the ablest architects. We diminish ourselves when we take these things for granted. We worship God, literally and figuratively, in the beauty of holiness. Art is the beauty we set apart the beauty we make holy. What s more many of us still have something to contribute. We need not bury our talents or become jaded with age. Every child, Pablo Picasso quipped, is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when we grow up. On a similar vein, Jesus remarked, Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. (Mark 10:15) Children play. Children draw. Children sing. Children are filled with awe. Children like brightness, and colour, and rhythm, and movement, and poetry, and faces, and symmetry. Our churches are filled with such things. This is the stuff of life. And we worship a God who blesses the stuff of life. Never lose sight of that. 16 How Does Dance Inform and Cultivate Our Service to God? by The Rev d Katherine Bourbonniere Dance to me is more than an art. It is where the inner most part of my soul meets God. Dance enables me to be connected to the speechless words God speaks to me throughout my day to day life. When dance is missing in my life, I feel like the very cord that feeds me and enables me is severed. Dance is more than a movement of the body to music. It is the very essence of spirit that moves through every motion that I make, every piece of music that I listen to, every ebb and flow of living. It is breath; it is Spirit. I recognize that there are many other ways to accomplish these connections with God. This article is not to negate what enables others to meet God. This article names this place for me in dance. How can dance inform and cultivate my service to God? Simply put God and I talk to each other in the very being of dance. Whether I dance on my own or in public, God is there speaking to me in each movement that I make. It can be as minute as the movement of my eyes, to the grand movements of my body. Each change, each emotion sparked, each surprise, has a message that God enables me to discern, so that I can see where I am to move next. This message can be difficult at times to listen to. The message can come from not being able to perform a motion. It can be in doing a motion that I have never done before. When I listen to the message and discern its meaning, I am able to hear God. Sometimes it is a story that movement tells to others. This story is shared to others and it can tell the scripture, prayer, story or message in a new way; sparking the minds of others to experience this message in a new and alive manner. When we listen to a story through sight and music, we hear new insights that enable us to have new eyes on some of the same stories that we have heard before. Diakonia 16 Fall 2014

There are times when dance has no finite story but the message is in where it takes a person. To the depths of the soul, to the place where one is in awe, is in sheer joy or in the depths of despair. It takes me to the place where I recognize the sacred grace that only God can provide in these soul places. As humans, we need to go to these places at times so that our faith is nourished and upheld, confirmed and named. When we are in this place, God tells us of the unconditional love that God gives in abundance. It provides us with the courage to stand in the midst of the most desperate places and know God is there. I have been blessed with moments where dance has connected me with others where I otherwise may never have been welcomed. I have had times when language has been a barrier but dance spoke past the barrier and a relationship formed. I have had times when age or gender has caused others to place barriers but where the common language of dance has broken the barrier down. So dance has cultivated relationships where they may never have had the opportunity to shine. To me, Liturgical Dance when incorporated into the liturgies we celebrate provides another way of expressing the wisdom of that worship. The connections, relationships and soul moments that I speak of above are brought Liturgical dancers Ruth Moxley (L) and The Reverend Katherine Bourbonniere (R) perform at the installation service for Bishop Ron Cutler to a place where they touch the souls of many. For me it is a very vulnerable place to be because I share from the depth of who I am. However, sharing the depth of who we are, shares God with one another. It is sacred to me, and I am truly thankful to be able to share this with others. To me dance is my soul. When I broke my foot I still danced. When I have had to keep still, I have danced. When I had full movement of my body, I danced. As I get older and the grace of youth is not on my side, I still dance. I will dance as long as I am living. I do not believe that to dance has to be outward. It is inside me, it is outside me. When I am connected to the wave of Fall Diakonia

dance, I am connected to God. When I am connected to God, I am in relationship with the world and with others, serving as God has given me the gifts and talents to serve. The answer to the question, Dance informs and cultivates my service to God by nourishing me, by speaking to me, by connecting me and confirming my faith. From the Editor s Desk I pray you will enjoy this issue of the Diakonia and look at what is around you with different eyes, looking to see where God is in the many works of art created for your enjoyment and as a means of encountering the risen Lord. We are grateful for the articles by Rev d Tom and Rev d Katherine, both of whom have taken the time to write about something meaningful to them. Art crosses all sorts of barriers for those of limited or no hearing, those with limited or no vision; those who have health related issues that limit their ability to understand and those whose mobility is compromised. Art touches the soul and there is no richer place than within our church home to experience the riches of the artistic gifts which God has given to so many. I encourage you to look, listen and appreciate what these gifted artists have done to help open the scriptures for us through their art. My working career brought me in touch with many artists who were able to create works of art which were exquisite in their creation. They were using the gifts given them by God, just as we, as Lay Readers, are using our gifts given to us by God. If you have suggestions for anything you would like more information on that we could include in upcoming issues of the Diakonia, please contact me. Your input would be very welcomed! With every blessing, Victoria Henrikson Diakonia 18 Fall 2014

A World in Turmoil This past week has seen the world in a turmoil aviation disasters, violent fighting between Israel and Palestine; the continuing wars in Syria, Iraq and unrest in Ukraine; forest fires; terrible floods and now the Ebola virus epidemic in Africa so many lives lost, so many good people gone and so many left to mourn. What can we, ordinary citizens of a great country, do to help? We can t leave it all to governments. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King once said, At the end of the 20 th Century most of us will not have to repent of the great evil we have done, but of the apathy that has prevented us from doing anything at all. What will be said of us at the end of the 21 st Century? May God continue to bless you! Your sister in Christ, Shirley Williams President PRAY FOR PEACE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. Fall Diakonia

Our Association Needs a Secretary Our Association has been well served over the past eight years with Marie Ayotte as its Secretary. She tendered her resignation from this position in June 2014 at the Annual General Meeting. We are indeed very grateful and acknowledge Marie s participation and dedication to this office over these past seven years and wish her well as she enjoys the next chapters of her life. So, the Association now needs to fill this vacancy. Do you have time and the desire to serve as part of the Executive of the Lay Readers Association in the capacity of Secretary? If so, and you are interested in carrying out this ministry, please contact our President, Shirley Williams soon. Her contact information can be found in the listing of Executive Members on page 12. Thank you for giving thought to taking on this ministry. Diakonia 20 Fall 2014

Conference Information Biography of The Rev d Paul Jennings Fall Conference Speaker A new Nova Scotian, Paul has served as a priest in the Diocese of Montreal for over 20 years. For 12 of those years he worked as Director of Pastoral Studies at the Montreal Diocesan Theological College, and taught preaching, worship, and pastoral identity in the ecumenical setting of the Montreal School of Theology. He currently lives just outside of Annapolis Royal, where his wife is the United Church minister. Fall Conference Workshop Preaching as a Spiritual Discipline Preaching is both a joy and a great responsibility and occasionally can feel like a burden. In this retreat/workshop, we will explore some of the spiritual roots of preaching: openness to God s living Word, close attention to the biblical text, generous use of imagination, and a humble self-awareness of our own calling. The sessions are designed both as a refresher workshop in the fundamentals of sermon preparation, and a guided retreat to keep us centred on both the joy and sense of responsibility at the root of our preaching ministry. Participants are encouraged to bring with them the lectionary texts on which they will next be preaching, if these are known. Faith is not believing that God can, It is knowing that God WILL!
