4 th DAY LOG SPRING 2016 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Sponsorship Music Matters Events at a Glance Greetings from your Secretariat YOUR SECRETARIAT Lay Director, Barbara Sawatsky, Treasurer, Sue Bonneau, Secretary, Lisa Whynott, Post Cursillo Director, Vacant Pre-Cursillo Director, Deidre Andrea, Communications Director, Shelley Drummond Supply Director, Christine Scott, Palanca Director, Edy Guy- Francois, Fourth Day Log Editor Sherryll Murphy, Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Judi Phillips Assistant Spirtual Advisory Rev. Peter Rafuse, Website: org/index.html TRUST IN THE LORD INSPIRING WORDS FROM YOUR LAY DIRECTOR Have you ever started something new, with eagerness and ideas of how you want thing to go?? You want to be as good as your predecessors, you want to add value to your time and energies. You throw yourself into it with your whole heart and soul, you truly feel like you are moving forward in the direction you are aiming at, only to come to a point where it s not quite going as you planned or as you had hoped it would?? I think we all have at one time or another or many times put ourselves in this position. It s at these times when I turn to the Bible. Google really helps as well because you can type in the scripture you are looking for. My most recent search took me to Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." And then Bingo, the light goes on and you realize that you haven t approached the task with all your trust in the Lord, that you thought YOU knew better and then you hand it all over and everything moves into alignment. It s at these times I say to myself, self you should know better by now that He has plans for me and to stop trying to grab the wheel to drive. Let Him show us His path and avoid the disappointment of things not going our way. Ultreya my fellow Cursillistas. Barb MUSINGS WHILE IN SEARCH FOR A PLAN Renovations while living in the home can pose numerous headaches as it does cause one to ponder about all the STUFF that has accumulated in the dwelling over the years. Does one actually need all of it? When was the last time most of it was used? Such musings take me back to a homily I heard many years ago that was delivered by Lay reader, Lester Booth and he asked, Have you ever seen a hearse followed by a moving truck? All these things, all these material things, all these things that are not being used but is taking up space 1
A former colleague of mine would occasionally mention minimalism as a way of life and unfortunately for me the concept did not follow me home. She and her family would live in a house for a few years, place it on the market and move on to another abode without the fanfare that usually accompanies a big move. Her house was constantly in the staging phase in other words ready for the market. A friend has often said to me, When one piece comes into the house something has to go out! making me wonder as I look around what things should have gone out each time items were brought in. So for the past several weeks I have been chiding myself about what to do with all of this STUFF as I realize that I have no real attachment to most of it? Where is that moving truck, the minimalist approach or the object that has to go out once something new has come in? Then I cast my mind to Jesus and His Disciples and I know what I have to do about this STUFF. A plan is taking shape. Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness. 1 Timothy 4:7 Edy Guy-François candidates? A true gift of love. Candidates having received this financial support introduced themselves as having received the gift of Cursillo. Your Secretariat would like to revive this tradition and so they have approved the development of a Cursillo Weekend Fund. You can make a donation to this fund, big or small, and help to defray the cost of the weekend for a candidate or a team member A Gift of Love. Donations can be forwarded to Sue Bonneau, Treasurer, 6-83 Collins Grove Dartmouth, NS B2W 4G3. Your cheque should be made out to the Nova Scotia and PEI Cursillo Movement and please clearly indicate on the cheque or in a note the purpose of the donation. You can also make a donation at an Ultreya (see schedule below) by simply placing an envelope marked as A Gift of Love in the collection box. We will keep you updated on the progress of the fund through the financial statements. Your contribution will ensure that financial need is not a barrier to the Cursillo Weekend. A weekend we all recognize as a significant event in our walk with Jesus. DeColores Sherryll Murphy 2016 CURSILLO WEEKENDS A GIFT OF LOVE There are many barriers to attending a Cursillo Weekend. We all know what they are family responsibilities, conflicting events, health and the fear of the unknown. For many, finances are a barrier. Did you know that at one time in this Diocese active Cursillistas paid for the weekend for Planning for the 2016 weekends is underway. The Men s and Women s weekends will be held October 13-16, 2016 at the Debert Hospitality Center, Debert. As was the case last year, accommodations, meals, talks and worship will be separate for the men and women. The Invasion will be a joint event. 2

CALLING ALL MUSICIANS! Music does matter. It s central to our weekends and Ultreyas. So, if you play an instrument, like to sing or have a love for music we can use you on the Cursillo/Ultreya Music Team. Call or Barb at or barbarasawatsky@gmail.com. Hello my name is Shelley Drummond and I made the 22nd Women's Anglican Cursillo in 2001 at the Hantsport Baptist Church where I sat at the table of Saint Joan of Arc. My weekend was amazing, however I have been inspired to stay active in my Fourth Day by remaining involved. I have been able to attend most Ultreyas, I participate in a Group Reunion where I am continually blessed by six other Cursilliastas. I have also been blessed to be on teams where I worked in the conference room as a table leader. I have worked behind the scenes as part of a detail team, I have served as an Assistant Coordinator and a Coordinator and the past 37th weekend I was truly blessed to be on the palanca team. I am currently a member of the Servant Community of Secretariat where I hold the position of Communications Director. It has come with some challenges but the support I have received is encouraging. I have come to some Ultreyas and requested the Cursilliastas update their contact information. However I still have some s that bounce back so I decided to put my address shelleydrumm59@gmail.com in the log for people to contact me if they wish to stay in touch with upcoming events. Some of us attended the Ultreya on the South Shore in Bridgewater and received a blessing. I would like to encourage others from metro to support the one in Shelburne in June. REJOICE IT HAS BEEN FOUND The album which contains the Women s weekend photos beginning in 1982 has been found. We give thanks to God that this important part of our history has not been lost. Thank you Christine for your careful search. In other news, Marilyn Scott is leading the prayer circle and can be reached at SPONSORSHIP ROLE Hello my name is Deidre Andrea and I made the 24 th Cursillo Weekend at St. James Church in Kentville where I sat at the table of 3
St. Anne. As the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer come calling, it will be easy for each of us to get caught up in the everyday occurrences of life. I would like to talk to you about the guidelines of sponsorship for the upcoming set of Men s and Women s weekends being held in Debert, October Sponsorship is the opportunity to pass on the wonderful gifts that we have received and experienced by having made our Cursillo weekend. Our continued involvement with the Cursillo Movement by attending Ultreyas and participating in Group Reunions reinforces that gift. It is important that we give prayerful consideration to those we are approaching to attend a Cursillo Weekend so they and the other Candidates can come away from their weekends with a positive experience. One that will help them in their walk with Christ and enable them to share their faith with others in a supportive and prayerful community. Who should attend a Cursillo Weekend? A baptized Christian, active in their parish, someone who has Christian values and is interested in spiritual growth. A Candidate should be well in body, mind, and emotions. Please pray for your friend before you approach them to attend a weekend and if there are concerns perhaps discuss it with your parish priest. If possible, invite the Candidate to attend an Ultreya or a Group Reunion before the weekend. If necessary help the Candidate fill out the application form and explain the cost of the weekend as well as what they have to bring and provide transportation for the Candidate. Make sure all parts of the application are forwarded to the Pre-Cursillo Director Deidre Andrea. Make sure you have prepare Palanca for your candidate and attend the Closing. Remember to follow up with your Candidate one to two days after the weekend and take her to the 4rh Day Seminar and Ultreya. Keep in touch with your candidate and help her grow in her 4 th Day. I pray that all sponsors look at the reasons for sponsoring Candidates for the weekend. It is a huge responsibility and should be taken seriously. You are not alone on this mission, you have Brothers and Sisters on the same mission and the Holy Spirit to guide and direct you in your work. Remember what is on the backs of your cross Christ Is Counting On you. Peace & Light Deidre Andrea (Pre Cursillo Director) NOTE: Application Forms are attached to this newsletter. HELLO FROM OUR ASSISTANT SPIRITUAL ADVISOR Greetings to all my sisters and brothers who are reading the 4 th Day Log. We are busy hear in the parish of St. Martin s Western Shore. Our fund raisers are in full swing and in June St. Mark s Church will host another great Seniors Tea. We are immersed in meetings and we have just combined all our church councils and parish council into one. In the midst of all we are doing many of our parishioners are focused on prayer for the people of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Once again the fire that has threatened Fort McMurray is raging, this time within some of the oil industry camps where thousands of people work, among them members of Mary s family and mine. 4
Many people are displaced, out of work, and now heading down highway 63. We pray for their safety and for their families who depend on them. We remember in prayer all first responders, especially those trying to put out the fire and repair the damaged infrastructure in the Fort McMurray area. At times like this we may feel helpless. It is important to remember the power of prayer. Like all of you Mary and I believe God accomplishes great things in and through people who are faithful to Him. By God s grace and through His faithful people countless lives have been saved. Our faith tells us God will restore the land and His peoples shattered lives. In times like this it is important to remember God s promises which are known to people of faith through His Grace and the Holy Spirit. So what does God promise us? God tells us that that when we come to him with our burdens and cares He will grant us rest and refreshment. Through His grace and spirit God will renew us and equip us to do His will. As we show love for others and serve them God will give us greater and greater capacity to be His hands and feet. God promises us that when we have loved him, and served others in our generation, He will gather us unto himself. Our reward is that we will live with him forever in heaven. God taught me a lesson about what is going on inside his heart. Last week this young man shared one of the prayers I wrote for our face book page. He sent it to many of his friends, some still in Alberta and some back in Cape Breton and in Newfoundland. What will come out of this, only God knows? This is where in the midst of crisis our faith and trust is well placed in our redeemer and friend. God has taught me two very important things in life, it is not my place to judge others and that His compassion and love exceeds all the powers of this world. God is working great things within the hearts of people we see every day. God will take the least likely and raise them up for His divine purposes. Our God is an awesome God, He is Lord of heaven and earth and he will on the Last Day restore all things and bring them unto himself. As one of my dear friends would say, pray hard and trust in God. Your brother in Christ, The Rev. Peter Rafuse Throughout this crisis brought on by hot weather, wind and fire some amazing things have happened. People I know who rarely think of God or express any faith in him have been turning to Him. Friends and acquaintances who regard themselves as not very religious are now talking to God within heartfelt prayer. One young man, related to me through marriage, has amazed me, I did not know his thoughts could be so deep. I did not understand his capacity to care for others. 5

ANGLICAN CURSILLO MOVEMENT (Diocese of Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island) NOTE: Sponsor to KEEP this page! SPONSORSHIP GUIDELINES The prayerful selection of Candidates is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of the Cursillo movement. As Cursillistas, we must recognize our responsibilities in sponsorship and establish the fact that the Cursillo method is not designed for everyone. As a matter of fact, we often find ourselves talking about Cursillo instead of telling others about the person it is centered upon. Jesus Christ. What we need to remember is that our method of sharing Jesus Christ, our form of evangelization, is the living and sharing of the Good News through a weekend encounter called Cursillo. The selection of Candidates should depend primarily on a person s potential to be a Leader, their spirituality and ability to relate to others. How much education the person has, how well they can speak, or how well they are known in the community are not criteria for good Candidates; however, the quality of the individual is important. Sponsors should look for those with that kind of potential. Some understanding of what the church stands for is essential. Since the format of the Weekend is rather intense, it is advisable that the Candidate be well in body, mind and emotions. The purpose of Cursillo is to build up the body of the Church through a positive experience. Therefore, we must consider and respect the WHOLE person we intend to sponsor, not to mention the well being of the other Candidates. Personal contact and reliance on the Holy Spirit are as important for Cursillistas as they were for the Apostles. Therefore, pray for direction to make the right choice to share with others the Cursillo method: Make a friend, be a friend, bring your friend to Christ. Friendship is emphasized because it is through our continued contact that we mature as members of the living Body of Christ. PRAY for your friends BEFORE you approach them about the weekend. Be sure that you never resort to pressure tactics of any kind. Your enthusiasm will speak for itself. Answer any questions as simply and honestly as possible and try to ease any fears that may surface. If your friend is married, every effort should be made to befriend both partners and explain the weekend to both of them. Prior to the Weekend, pray, knowing that your friend s attendance depends on God and then do all that you can to facilitate your friend going on a Cursillo. Mark the dates of the Cursillo Weekends on your calendar. God is working through you to bring your friend to Cursillo. NOTE: It is highly recommended that you attend a Sponsorship Seminar at either the Metro, the Valley or the South Shore Ultreya. QUESTIONS REGARDING SPONSORSHIP MAY BE DIRECTED TO THE PRE-CURSILLO DIRECTOR at
