Change! I find change to be fundamentally difficult. Change entails learning new habits and customs. Think about the first time you learned how to ride a bike or drive a car. There are a number of small movements that add up to one big ability. Where do I put my hands and feet? How do I coordinate my movements while paying attention to the world around me? Change means moving outside of my comfort zone. Change always involves movement and is not always bad. The book of Acts starts with a big move. The Resurrected Jesus has been hanging around with the disciples. And disciples asks Jesus what s next? Is this the time when God s political reign will overthrow Rome s? To this question, Jesus replies in Acts 1:7-8 It is not for you to know the times But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. And with that, Jesus ascends to heaven. That is a big move and a big change for the disciples. They were used to God in a specific way (Jesus hanging out with them) and yet, Jesus left so that the Holy Spirit could come. This change would have been unnerving. The lesson for us is one of trust. We won t always have knowledge about what is next, but God gives us the strength we need in the present moment. Welcome 8 1

2 (article cont.) It is always difficult to move. As I prepare to move from Wesley, one of my emotions has been grief. I have been thankful for all of the friends I have made. You have loved Theo and helped us to feel like this is our home. I have appreciated being a part of a church that I would describe as Biblical, hardworking, kind-hearted and committed. Good-byes are tough because one of the questions they leave hanging is this: what s next? My hope for Wesley Chapel is that you would continue to grow in unity of the Holy Spirit and continue to step out in love to our surrounding communities. Change may be frustratingly difficult, but it is also the only way transformation occurs. My final prayer for you is this: May you all may be moved by God into the dangerous and strange situations life provides. May you step out in peace no matter the circumstance. May you be confident no matter your own flaws, because you have a Father who loves you and lives in you. Be moved. Change. 3 Dear Friends, The Servant Leader Board voted to merge Caring for People and Serving our Community into Serving People. Serving People includes such areas as Hospitality, Mission Outreach, Food Service, and Visitation. The primary impact of this merger will be how the church is structured and will have little effect on our day-to-day operations. We are bringing these two areas together as one area for three reasons. 1. By simplifying the structure, it will make it easier to connect people to service. 2. The new structure will eliminate confusion about serving internally or externally. All service will be valued. 3. It allows a Director to be responsible for one area and one team instead of two areas and two teams. Debbie Smith has agreed to be the Servant Leader of this area. She was the Servant Leader of the now-merged Caring for People. Deb Mettling was the Servant Leader of the now merged Serving our Community. Deb will continue to be involved as the team leader of Serve Locally under Serving People. Debbie, Deb and Pastor Curts created the Serve Merge Plan that was passed by the Servant Leader Board on May 19. We will now begin the search for a person to fill the newly created position of Director of Serving People. Melissa Caufield and Debbie Smith will lead the search team. Please pray that we would find the person God has chosen to fill this new position. Job Posting Director of Serving People helps lead people into serving within the church and in the community. Leadership responsibilities include keeping leaders of Hospitality, Mission, Food Service, and Visitation in line with the mission of making disciples. Qualifications include: the ability to relate to people; highly organized; ability to communicate, and must have a passion for serving people. Expectations of part-time: a 30-hour work week at $15.00 an hour with Sundays and Wednesdays mandatory. Pastor Tony Alstott Marriage Tip What might start out as kidding and joking may end up belittling and could end up hurting your spouse's feelings. Take very good care of your spouse's feelings. Ask your spouse to point out to you when you might have hurt his or her feelings so you can be sure to apologize and not do that again. Silver Heights Camp Silver Heights Camp is having a revival on Sunday June 14 - Friday June 19 at 7:00 pm with an ice cream social each evening. 4 Con nued Thank you The yard sale/plant sale on May 16 was very successful and a big thank you goes out to everyone who donated items or came out and shopped. The teams really appreciate everyone's support so that the people going to Guatemala and Mexico in July will be better sent on their way. Your prayers for safety, good health, and finalizing plans would be greatly appreciated as well. Open House Join us in celebrating Peter, Allison, and Theo Curts as they embark on their new journey at Yorktown UMC. There will be an open house in their honor on Sunday, June 14 from 12:30-2:30 pm in the Celebration Room 212. Refreshments will be served. 4

5 Thank You Wesley Chapel Family, My thanks to God and Jesus his son and to my Wesley Family and my friends for their prayers, visits, cards, phone calls and flowers. With all the Doctors I had to work on me, it was more than a miracle it was from the father that the doctors found the problem that I had. I still have more medical needs that will be in the future. Your genuine concern for our loss was comforting. The Richardson family Dear members of Wesley Chapel. I was in the hospital in Indianapolis for three weeks and discharged on Tuesday, April 14. Following a brief stay in the hotel, I finally made it home on Monday, April 20. It is so good to finally be home. I want to thank you for the blanket that your prayer Blanket Ministry made for me. That was very special to know that so many were praying for me during this time. Since we don t see them as often as we like, please take care of Uncle Steve and Aunt Debbie Smith for us. I am also very thankful for the person and their family that gave me the amazing gift of life, my new liver! If it had not been for this amazing donation, my story would have a much different outcome. I look forward to getting my strength back and feeling better. It has been a long journey and it is not over yet. They told me it will take a year for me to be completely healed. I ask that you continue to remember me in your prayers as I continue healing and learning all the new do s and don ts that go along with an organ transplant. 6 New Life Groups The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst - Lysa is learning that there is a big difference between saying yes to everyone and saying yes to God. In The Best Yes she will help you: cure the disease to please with a biblical understanding of the command to love; escape the guilt of disappointing others by learning the secret of the small no; overcome the agony of hard choices by embracing a wisdom based decision-making process; and rise above the rush of endless demands and discover your best yes today. This study is on Wednesdays July 1- August 5 at 6:30 pm. The facilitators are Rhonda Alstott and Marcia Latimer. New Wednesday Night Classes Wesley Wednesdays will resume on August 12. These are the classes we have scheduled. Raising Kingdom Kids by Tony Evans - Raising kids who recognize and retain their identity as children of the King launches healthy adults who have the capacity to stand strong in their faith. The facilitators are Stephanie Taggart and Melissa Caufield. Journey to Believer Building by Tommy Higel - This "journey" is a 7-lesson study of the "one another" phrases in the New Testament. From studying these phrases, we can discover how God wants us to build up one another. The facilitator is Ron Van Tyle. Breath by Beth Moore - Breath examines the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Its title is drawn from the words of John 20:00, which records that Jesus breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. The facilitators are Rhonda Alstott and Marcia Latimer. Faith Lessons, That the World May Know, Volume 1 by Ray Vander Laan - In this first volume of Faith Lessons discover how God guided his people to a specific place. The facilitator is Debbie Smith. New Fall Thursday Study Precept, Hebrews, Parts 1,2, and 3 by Kay Arthur - In these last days, God has spoken to us in His Son. What does He say about Jesus, angels, and our great salvation? Learn about Jesus' superiority to all in this exciting study of Hebrews 1-4 that enlightens and enlivens Old Testament law and prophecy. This study begins Thursday, September 10 at 9:00 am. The facilitators are Rhonda Alstott and Marcia Latimer. New Fall Friday Study Breaking Free by Beth Moore - In Breaking Free, Beth Moore embarks on a study of selected passages from the book of Isaiah, drawing several parallels between the captive Israelites and today s Christians, in order to show how to make freedom in Christ a daily reality. Moore teaches readers to remove obstacles that hinder freedom by identifying spiritual strongholds in their lives and overcoming them through the truth of God s Word truth that will set us free. This study begins August 14 at 9:00 am. The facilitators are Amy Atkinson and Becky Perkins. 6
