San Pedro is the first Catholic Church in the upper keys since the Spanish missionaries preached to the Caloosa Indians in the eighteenth century. Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley of the Diocese of St. Augustine selected the name Mission De San Pedro. San Pedro was dedicated as a mission in 1955 by Archbishop Hurley. San Pedro is a Stewardship parish. We depend on the generosity and faith of the community and parishioners to support this beautiful parish. We look forward to people giving of their time, talent and treasure. Although we are small, we provide a variety of ministries. We have the San Pedro Women s Guild and Men s Club who gather for parish events and fellowship. Our Youth Group meets every other Sunday evening in Williams Hall. Religious Education classes are taught Sunday mornings. There are daily masses and Eucharistic services. Each year San Pedro sponsors the famous Christmas Bazaar and Art Under the Oaks, arts and crafts shows. Since we are a seasonal parish, we invite all visitors to join our fellowship and hospitality while you are here in the Florida Keys.

3 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time READINGS FOR THE WEEK SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God's surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today's Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today's familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody's life--not necessarily our own--will be surprised for the better. TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen Zion and Jerusalem (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm -- Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading -- All the varied gifts and talents found in the Christian community are products of the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel -- At a wedding festival in Cana, Jesus changes water into wine at his mother's request (John 2:1-11). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages as early as the second century, in the early period church leaders relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society. In most cases, society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households. From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair, managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a "bride price" as compensation for the loss of a skilled household worker. As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping practice of earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kidnapping of the bride, the husband abducting his bride from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father's gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed her a piece of "sacred cake," initiating her into a new way of life. It's fascinating to see how customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed!. Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy For the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis is granting indulgences to people who visit four papal basilicas or a cathedral where they live, to anyone who performs just one of the traditional works of mercy; and also to prisoners, those suffering from illness, or elderly people who attend Mass or pray wherever they can. 5 SEWER PROJECT UPDATE A big THANK YOU to all of you who supported generously to the sewer project. We are still short of the funds we need for the project. Please prayerfully consider making a donation in support of this project if you have not already done so. With your help we will be able to meet our obligation to the Village of Islamorada. San Pedro very much depends on each and every one of you for your assistance Legal Assistance for Immigration Issues On Friday February 5 th in Key West and Saturday February 6 th in Marathon there will be an opportunity to meet with immigration lawyers for individual consultations free of charge. An appointment is needed and a pre- consultation form must be filled out. Gold and Silver Wedding Anniversary Mass All couples married in the Catholic Church celebrating their Silver, Gold or 50 plus wedding anniversary in 2016 are invited to Mass at St. Mary Cathedral on Saturday, Feb. 13 and be blessed by Archbishop Thomas Wenski. Couples interested in having their picture taken with Archbishop Wenski should be there at 4 p.m. Mass starts at 5:30 p.m. There will be designated sitting according to anniversaries. All couples should contact the parish to register for the Mass. Many, Many, Thanks! The time has gotten away from us, but the San Pedro Women s Guild would like to thank all of our parishioners and visitors for their generosity. The annual Thanksgiving food drive was a great success! Trough your generosity we were able to provide food for 36 families who are parishioners or live in the Upper Keys. Along with the bulging baskets, we also provided each family with gift certificates for a minimum of $25.00 gift card to be redeemed at local grocery stores. Our Angel Wreath project was able to provide gifts for almost 300 children in our parish and the Upper Keys. We had never had so many requests from needy families. Your response was overwhelming! Not only were our parishioners and visitors taking children s tags for themselves, but many took multiple tags that were distributed to coworkers and neighbors. A special thanks goes out to those who didn t take tags, but donated cash or brought in bags and boxes full of toys, and said give to any of the children in need. For those of us who work on this project, this year was a very moving experience that brought many tears to our eyes and those of the parents that were able to provide Christmas gifts to their children because of YOU. Again, we d like to thank you for supporting these projects sponsored by the Women s Guild.
