THE PATH OF THE PRODIGAL SUNDAY, JANUARY 21, 2018 Living up to my sacred identity is hard! It means confessing that I have prioritized my own happiness at the expense of others. It means remembering that every time I fail to choose grace, or goodness, or peace, I am thoughtlessly squandering my divinity. DeReau K. Farrar, Director of Music, First Unitarian Church of Portland Oregon

ORDER OF SERVICE SUNDAY, JANUARY 21, Opening Music Quiet Prelude by Gilbert M. Martin Opening Words Rev. Kathleen McTigue, Visiting Minister +*Opening Song 347 [Gray Hymnal] Gather the Spirit *Chalice Lighting Words +*Chorus Rebekah Visco, Lay Service Leader by Jim Scott Gather in peace, gather in thanks. Gather in sympathy now and then. Gather in hope, compassion and strength Gather to celebrate once again. Welcome +*Song 128 [Gray Hymnal] For All That Is Our Life Reading Luke 15:11-32

Musical Offering African American Spiritual Nobody Knows the Trouble I ve Seen Sermon The Path of the Prodigal A Time of Silent Reflection Musical Interlude Personal Reflection Concerns of the Congregation Musical Offering My Lord, What a Morning African American Spiritual Meditation and Aspiration Prayer for Travelers by Angela Herrera Offering Words

Music Reflection by George Winston We invite anyone to light a candle of celebration, concern or remembrance as all honor this time with respectful silence. *An Affirmation of Faith by Kathleen McTigue We breathe the common wind of the earth no matter where we live, who we love, what language we speak. We drink the common water of the earth no matter the color of our skin, how long we live, the coverings we drape on our forms. We follow the common paths of the earth no matter our beliefs, how far we move from home, the gold that we carry, or its lack. May we live from these truths: our hearts open to the holiness all around us, our hands turned always toward the common good. *Closing Song 323 [Gray Hymnal] Break Not the Circle *Closing Words and Extinguishing the Chalice

Closing Music New Day by Philip Wesley Notes Thank you to the pledging members of this congregation whose generosity makes our Sunday services possible.
