Gathering Hymn: 2 Got Fish Fish Fry Fundraiser Faith United will host a Fish Fry on Saturday, May 5, 2018 with proceeds to benefit the General Fund. The event will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Food will be prepared by Molly and Scott Kern who operate Got Fish at the Bloomsburg Fair. The event is a take-out dinner. The Fish Fry is designed with the expectation that the majority of the meals will be sold ahead of time in a presale. This is so Molly and Scott know how much fish to bring. There will be a limited number of meals available at the door. Please consider helping the event by volunteering to sell presale tickets. The event is also in need of grocery-style bags to use in handing out the food. Additionally, there will be a bake sale for which assistance in providing items is appreciated. If you would like to help with the event or have any questions, please contact Lori Bankes. You can reach her at (570) Each dinner will include one piece of British-style cod tail, potato wedges, coleslaw, and a roll. The price is $8.00. Many thanks are extended to Molly and Scott. 4 Prayer of the Day P: O God, you give us your Son as the vine apart from whom we cannot live. Nourish our life in his resurrection, that we may bear the fruit of love and know the fullness of your joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Please be seated First Reading: Acts 8:26-40 L: A reading from Acts. Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Get up and go towards the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. (This is a wilderness road.) 27 So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go over to this chariot and join it. 30 So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, Do you understand what you are reading? 31 He replied, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. 32 Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. 34 The eunuch asked Philip, About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? 35 Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized? 38 He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip * baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. All those who wish to receive the grace found in Christ are welcome to come forward to the table to share in communion. Following the usher s guidance, please come forward down the center aisle, and receive an individual cup. There are two chalices (pouring cups); the first contains wine and the second grape juice. When you have received the bread and wine (or juice), return to your pew via the side aisle. Children and others who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing. If you have not yet filled out a communion card this year please take the time to do that today. 7 Gospel Reading: John 15:1-8 7 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. 2 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3 You have already been cleansed * by the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; Eucharistic Prayer P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. 8 Joys and Concerns Prayers of the Church A: Rejoicing in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we pray for the witness of the church, the wholeness of creation, and all who are in need. (a brief silence) For ministries that nurture faith formation. For missionaries and Bible study leaders. For those who are seeking, questioning, and curious. For seminarians, campus ministers, and the newly baptized, let us pray. A: For the beauty and health of the earth. For vineyards and orchards, groves and plains. For rain forests and arctic tundra. For volcanoes and mountains, hills and valleys. For oceans deep and rivers wide, let us pray. A: For spears to beat into pruning hooks. For harsh words to be reformed into loving speech. For bombs and sniper attacks to cease. For justice and peace in every land, let us pray. A: For homeless youth and rejected children. For isolated grandparents and lonely nursing home residents. For the shamed, the slighted, and the disregarded members of our communities. For all the sick (especially), let us pray. A: For all who live with post-traumatic stress disorder and postpartum depression. For all who struggle with eating disorders and anorexia for all who suffer in silence and all who suffer alone, let us pray. A: In thanksgiving for all the mystics and theologians who live eternally with you. For those we mourn and those we would rather forget. For the kingdom on earth to be as it is in heaven, let us pray. P: We entrust all our prayers to you, gracious God. Receive them by the power of the Holy Spirit and the love of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Peace P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you.
