We were an inter-generational team of GVBC members of different ages and personalities, but we had been brought together by a common vision and mission through hours of prayer, study of culture and language, and preparation for all the activities we were going to be a part of. When we were there, I was deeply encouraged by the tireless efforts of our GVBC team along with Pastor Jesus, his wife, and all the volunteers of Dios es Amor, which made it easy for me to be spent in service to others, to feel so alive in my faith, and to be aware of all the opportunities God has placed before me to make an impact for His Kingdom. Now that I m home, this same challenge is before me and before each one of us. To ask the question each day, Am I living my life with this same type of expectancy and sense of mission? Are there things God wants me to do today, and people He wants me to talk to, ways He wants to use who I am? What do I have for His Kingdom? Even in the mundane and routine things, I believe God wants us to see we re a part of something much bigger than ourselves we are on a mission like Jesus was when He was on earth. And that s why, in the Gospel of John, Jesus says more than twenty times: The Father has sent me. Because Jesus is a missionary coming from the culture of heaven to the culture of earth. And then he says to us as Christians in John 20:21, As the Father has sent me, I m sending you. Jesus was a missionary and we as His followers are called to be missionaries as well. And this calling doesn t just mean going around the world. Sometimes, most often, it means going across the street. But is this your mindset? Do you see yourself as a missionary? Do you believe this above your job, your classes, your time with your friends and family? Are you a part of something much greater than yourself and are you on mission wherever you find yourself in life and in any geographical location? Are you praying for and aware of the opportunities God puts before you to talk with people, to reach out to people, and love people for the sake of the Gospel? I pray we can have this mindset each day in knowing we are on a mission; we are a part of a movement of God to reach those around us, and love those around us, and bring the Gospel message to those around us. In His service, Pastor Chris Koga

2 BAPTISM TESTIMONIES FROM SUNDAY, JULY 15 Frank & Patsy Kuwata Frank: The morning of December 5, 2005 was the beginning of our journey to a close relationship with God. One that fateful morning my wife, Patsy, suffered a hemorrhagic stroke an aneurysm in an artery of her brain ruptured. She was in extreme pain. I called 911 and she was taken to the hospital. The doctor told me what the diagnosis was and gave me a pamphlet that described the hemorrhagic stroke. The pamphlet stated, This type of stroke causes the worst headache you ll ever experience in your life. The pamphlet also added,... The prognosis is bleak: possible outcomes include death or severe handicap. I was devastated. After staying with Patsy all day and well into the night, I went home to shower and take a nap. At home I prayed to God that He would keep Patsy alive. As I knelt by our bed and prayed, I was crying like a child. Never in my entire life have I felt such overwhelming grief. I believed she would not survive. At any time during the following two to three weeks there was a possibility the hemorrhaging could recur. This was a very stressful time and I prayed frequently. She was in the Intensive Care Unit for 30 days. Our angels, during this time of distress, were our relatives and neighbors. They took turns staying by her in the ICU 24/7. Her rate of recovery was slow and after 30 days in ICU, she was moved to a rehab hospital. She spent 30 days at the rehab hospital where she underwent occupational, physical and speech therapy. When she got home, we had a daily ritual of going through 30 sets of exercises. She went back to the rehab hospital once a week as n outpatient for 6 months. I truly believe God answered my prayer in a positive way. Not only my prayers, but prayers of relatives and friends and strangers in prayer groups: a Lutheran prayer group, a group of Catholic nuns, a prayer group in Hawaii. We were blessed. I still thank God often for sparing Patsy s life. During Patsy s recover period, I felt we should attend church services as payback. I was not a real Christian, but my hope was that something good would happen to us. During my childhood, I attended a Buddhist church in Manzanar and in Boyle Heights. I told my mother I wanted to switch to a Baptist church. She was happy with the news and so I went to Evergreen Baptist in Boyle Heights on the corner of 2 nd and Evergreen. I went to Evergreen Baptist Church for a few years and lost interest because they didn t have a Basic Christianity course like we do here at GVBC. So, I was not in a strong spiritual relationship with God. After Patsy s stroke and recovery, we had to choose a home church. We selected three Nikkei Christian churches in the area to choose from. Over the course of several weeks, We attended the early morning and late morning services of each church. We picked the GVBC early morning service because it was the right fit for us. Back in 1942, when I was 8 years old, my family was sent to Manzanar. At the camp school there were kids from all over. There was one group that used to sing, I have a joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart, a song that was unfamiliar to me. Today, I am generally a happy and contented person I have far more good days than bad. But when we started attending GVBC, I felt JOY in my heart. And, I remembered that song from years ago which is so appropriate in my current Christian life. We have been attending services here at GVBC since October Our greatest blessing since coming here was discovering Pastor Ron Matsuda s Basic Christianity Class. We have learned so much and still get a lot of enjoyment from his 22-week class. We ve taken it three times. Pastor Ron is the most important reason for my reaching this important milestone and being able to declare, Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. Patsy: When I was growing up on the island of Kauai, I used to attend the Hanapepe Congregational Christian Church in the town of Hanapepe. My sisters and I used to wear pretty dresses that mother and grandmother made and we walked to the church barefooted. I remember the church staff always seemed to be in a bad mood and I never felt real close to God. After moving to Los Angeles to find my way in life, I didn t look for or attend church except for funerals and weddings. When I had my stroke in December 2005 and all during my long recovery in 2006, Frank prayed for me. He felt we should start going to church regularly after I recovered. To select a church to call our own, we went to early morning and late morning Sunday services because the music was familiar and not too loud. The Sunday sermons taught us a lot. In the Basic Christianity Class Pastor Ron taught us very patiently, (Continued on page 3) Page 2 SPIRIT

3 BAPTISM TESTIMONIES CONTINUED (Frank & Patsy Kuwata Continued from page 2) answering all questions. In our early days with GVBC, Pastor Ron even came to our house to answer questions and to teach us Christianity. I love the way our church presents the hymns on the screen so we can sing the poetry. I also enjoy watching the hula dancers praying as they dance. I wish we could have had information from our Lord in this manner when I was growing up. I m positive I will never forget our Lord again because He is always with me. Going to church, volunteering and doing simple fun things with our church friends are among my favorite social fellowship activities. Sachiko DilPare I can t believe I m standing here. It s been a long time 14 years since I first came to GVBC in My two sons were in 2 nd grade and kindergarten at the time and I wanted them to grow in the church environment. But, I myself was not interested in God. I was just working so hard to raise my kids and wanted to do anything good for them. In 2006 I started to attend Pastor Ron Matsuda s Basic Christianity Class. During Sachiko with her sons (on left) that time, my older son, Kenji, was going through a difficult time, and I felt my limit of Kenji and Shin what I could do to help him. That is the first time I seriously asked God for help. As my younger son, Shin, started to participate in more activities in high school, I started to become involved in church more, too. I started to help Nichigo s youth group and recently I joined a women s small group. In May this year, I ve attended women s retreat for the second time. In the last small group meeting, I brought up my question that I ve been asking many people for a long time. That is, Why I can t feel Jesus in my heart? I ve been attending the church for a long time, agreeing to all the messages and applying them to my life. I m worshiping, studying the Bible and more. As I was talking with people in my small group, I remembered one of Pastor Steve s messages. He talked about how you have to take off your own jacket before putting on your new jacket. What I have been doing all these years was trying to put on the new jacket over my own jacket. Therefore, God s message has not reached to my heart. My small group leader of Women s Retreat was Amy Ikari and she said all the messages I heard may have gone into the pockets of my jacket. What I should do is to take off my own jacket, give myself directly to Jesus, and accept God s message to my heart not in the pockets of my jacket. I felt this is what I was trying to find out all this time. I am still a little nervous about my new life with Jesus, but I decided to trust Jesus and go on. I will not live for myself, but for God who gives purpose to my life. I thank everyone who has helped me to bring me up here. And, I continue to ask everyone to be patient with me and help me grow with Jesus. Lastly, I chose this Bible verse for today s testimony. Colossians 3:12-15: Therefore, as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts since as members of one body you were called to peace. Thank you for listening. Lani Matsumura Good morning. My name is Lani Matsumura. I am fourteen yers old and will be going into the ninth grade. I began attending Greenhouse and Sunday school at GVBC about a year ago on Friday, July 1, 2011 when my friend, Kaci Wakuta, invited me. It has really changed my life because before I began coming here, I didn t really have a relationship with God. After I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior last year on July 8, I became really interested in learning about Him, and God s word. Having such supportive leaders and brothers and sisters in Christ, and knowing God will always be with me, always gives me strength, comfort, and encouragement during hard times. I have really grown in my faith and now understand I can always trust in Him and know that, no matter what challenges I face, it is part of His plan for me and He is always with me. Page 3
