Many thanks to all who attended our Catechetical Conference last week. Special thanks to those who presented workshops or helped with the Conference. There was a wonderful energy among the participants as we focused on Living as Missionary Disciples and as we prepared for another year of serving, teaching and accompanying God s people. Co-Workers in Transition We just celebrated Catechetical Sunday and are beginning a new program year. In some parishes, new directors of religious education, faith formation or youth ministry have taken the helm and are putting out into the deep. For a list of new ministers and positions, click here. For those starting in a new role, there is excitement in setting out. There are new relationships, lots to learn, and a sense that anything is possible. But there can be plenty of challenges, uncertainty, and missteps too. Transitions can be a spiritually rich time, as the Lord continues to remake us for his service. For all who have begun a new role this year, let us pray, and let us pledge our support and companionship along the way. Office of Catechesis and Youth Ministry News Parish and School Policy Manual We are happy to announce a new, completely updated Parish and School Policy Manual for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The manual was produced by the Office of Catechesis & Youth Ministry and the Office for Schools; it was reviewed by other diocesan offices, legal counsel, and educational leaders; and it received formal approval from Archbishop Listecki. The Parish and School Policy Manual provides an agreed upon instrument for ensuring that all our faith formation ministries are committed to catechetical excellence, safety, justice, and fostering lives of intentional discipleship. The Manual, and all associated forms, can be found at: In October, we will offer regional sessions to assist in using the manual. During each session, we will explain the overall structure of the manual, and will highlight certain areas that are most relevant to parish religious education and youth ministry. The sessions will be: October 23, :00pm - Location TBD October 25, :00am - Location TBD October 26, :00pm - Location TBD Connecting New College Freshmen with Catholic Campus Ministry 2/10

Last spring, we promoted an initiative called the Newman Connection, where we asked you to submit names and future colleges of your graduating seniors so they could be passed on to Catholic campus ministers where these young people will attend. Here s an update. To date, Catholic high schools and parishes here in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee submitted names and college destinations of 1258 graduating seniors. Most of these were submitted by our Catholic high schools. But 16 parishes also submitted names! The names were immediately forwarded to the campus ministers at the designated colleges/universities, so they were able to reach out to these new Catholic students when they arrived on campus. On the receiving end, the 12 Catholic campus ministries here in the Archdiocese received at total of 956 referrals. I think we ve had a good beginning for our first year. Come spring, we will ask you again. We hope that the number of participating parishes will grow, and that this effort will help us all to think beyond high school. Confirmation Retreat List One of the items that was heard at the Confirmation Consultations was that DREs/DYMs would like a listing of other Confirmation Retreats in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Participants felt that having a listing of other retreats would help them to find alternate retreats for those who are unable to attend their parishes retreat. If your parish is open to allowing teens from other parishes on your retreat, please submit your retreat details on this form. We will only accept overnight retreats for the listing. Retreat details will be available in October and will shared with any DRE/DYM/Parent/Youth who asks for Confirmation Retreats in the Archdiocese. Catechist Training Opportunites Are you working towards your religious education certificate or looking for a program to help you complete the requirements. Forming the Catechetical Spirit: A parish-based program leading to religious education certification. The program provides adult learning experiences in the areas of scripture, theology and catechetical methods, along with opportunities for building community, networking and spiritual formation. Participants can complete all requirements for certification in the course of about 9 months. Currently the Waukesha East and West Deaneries are offering both Basic Certification and Intermediate Certification and Basic Certification will also be offered at St. Kilian in Hartford in For more information, visit: 3/10

The Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry lists Courses, lectures, workshops that have been approved for clock hours towards Archdiocese of Milwaukee Religious Education Certification. Upcoming Events Download the Catechesis & Youth Ministry Office Calendar to stay up to date on events. Each session focuses on one area of ministry or family life. This fall's focus will be on Parent Cafés. Parent Café is a method you can use to bring parents together for significant that are non-threatening, but affirming of their experience. The Millennial Church Conference Wednesday, October 11, 2017 St. John Vianney Parish, Brookfield Whether you re a millennial or not, whether your job responsibilities formally include responsibility for young adult ministry or not, millennials are the largest generation in America and they re quickly becoming the largest percentage of people who live in your geographic parish. Do you (and your staff) know how to engage them? The Millennial Church Conference exists to equip Catholic leaders in dioceses, parishes, and organizations to engage the Millennial 5/10

generation. Sponsored by Brew City Catholic, the young adult ministry initiative of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. For more info and to register, see: From our Friends St. John Bosco Youth Day Saturday, October 7, 2017 Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill Register now to attend the 17th St. John Bosco Youth Day held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 9am to 6 pm. Each year, hundreds of youth from Wisconsin s five dioceses gather at Holy Hill to share their faith in Jesus Christ. The day-long event promises to be spiritually fruitful, with inspirational speakers, heart-filled prayer, and faithful fun. The event is geared for youth in grades 8th - 12th. This year s theme is The Rock, recalling the prayer of the psalmist, "He will keep me safe in his dwelling and set me high upon a rock." With life today, young people can feel uncertain, pressured, or just plain scared. Help them learn to cling to God, their Rock, and to find a solid path to guide them, and a dependable Love to hold them secure. St. John Bosco Youth Day is a great opportunity for young people to rekindle that flame of faith given to us by Our Lord. Register Now Holy Fire UIC Pavilion, Chicago, IL October 20 & 21, 2017 Holy Fire is a one-day event of faith designed by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry specifically for middle school youth (grades 6-9). It will again be held twice in Chicago at the UIC Pavilion from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on consecutive days - October 20 and 21, The event s mission is to engage young teens with the conviction of their baptismal promises and to challenge them to take a stand for their Catholic faith as they are sent forth to live as disciples in the world. In addition to the engaging musicians and speakers from across the United States, Cardinal Blase Cupich will be presiding over a special Mass of the Holy Spirit on both Friday and Saturday. Priests will also be listening to confession, as many young people desire to experience the gift of the sacrament during this special celebration. 6/10

Now through October 2, groups can purchase the one day tickets (normally $45) at an outstanding discounted rate of $35 each! For more details on schedule, keynoters, registration, teaching materials, and promotion resources visit: Arise Milwaukee presents...the Summit: HS Retreat Oct , 2017 at Holy Hill Get ready to make the climb and encounter Christ on the Summit! This weekend is perfect for teens who want to go deeper in their faith and learn how to share that faith with others. Cost: $75. Financial aid available. For more information, contact Sarah Daszczuk at WDREF Retreat Monday & Tuesday, October St. Anthony Retreat Center in Marathon, WI The theme is "Deepening our Communion with God" and will be facilitated by Sr. Jolyn Brehm, FSPA. Those who serve the Church often find it difficult to cultivate the deepening of communion with God. Looking to Jesus and finding that personal space away from demands and distractions is essential for healthy, grounded service and ministry. Using examples from the Gospels and practical suggestions, Sr. Jolynn helps us create a personal sanctuary for prayer. Deeper communion with God can be a reality for all of us! Please join us! For registration details, view the 2017 WDREF Retreat Brochure. Plan to Attend the NCCL Conference in Chicago When: May 30- June 2, 2018 Where: Hyatt Regency O Hare, Rosemont, IL Theme: Walk with Christ: Encounter. Accompany. Proclaim. Plan to participate in THE professional development conference for catechetical leaders. The National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL) brings together experts in evangelization and catechesis from parishes, academic institutions, publishers and resource providers, and diocesan ministry. The gathering offers opportunities for prayer, rejuvenation, formation and networking. 7/10

The NCCL Conference is worth attending every year, but in 2018, it will be more accessible than ever. The conference will take place in Rosemont, Illinois, just 143 miles from Fond du Lac, 136 miles from Sheboygan, 94 miles from Waukesha, 66 from Burlington, 64 miles from downtown Racine. So this conference will be less than 2 ½ hours from anywhere in the archdiocese. The Seventh Day Jewish Museum Milwaukee is proud to host thirty international artists as they reflect on one of the pillars of Jewish belief: the sanctity of the Sabbath. In our technology driven society, The Seventh Day provides an opportunity to explore the evolution and diversity of Sabbath observances through a variety of programs focused on different faiths, mindfulness practices and the back to nature movement.
