1 WELCOME TO WORSHIP WELCOME VISITORS AND GUESTS: We are glad you have come to join us in worship today! Please sign the guest book (located at the back of the sanctuary) before you join us for coffee and fellowship in the North Hall. GOD CALLS US TO WORSHIP Prelude: Choràle from Cantata No. 140 Sleepers Awake... Bach Chiming of the Hour *Opening Song: Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus... Lift Up Your Hearts #56 Lighting of Advent Candle: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light: On those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. (Isaiah 9:2) Our Savior Jesus said, You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. (Matthew 24:44) All will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. (1 Peter 4:5) Christ himself has given apostles, prophets, pastors and teachers to make God s people ready for works of service. (Ephesians 4:11) He will strengthen our hands to do his work and open our lips to declare his praise. (Psalm 51:15) Let us pray. Almighty God, you strengthen us that we may cast away the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. With Word and Sacrament, make ready our hearts. Make us ready to receive your Word and live by it daily. Make us ready to live our faith through love and service. And finally, make us ready to meet you face to face on the day your Son comes to judge the living and the dead; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 2006, 2016 Paul C. Stratman *Song: My Soul in Stillness Waits... Lift Up Your Hearts #63:1-3 *God's Greeting *We Greet One Another CELEBRATION OF RECONCILIATION Call to Confession: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! -Isaiah 30:15, 18 Prayer of Confession: Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you. Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. Assurance of Pardon: Cornerstone... see screen As the children continue with their worship downstairs, what is our prayer for them? That you grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Father's love. Children ages 5 years old through 4th grade are invited to meet at the back of the sanctuary to continue worship in the Vineyard Room downstairs.

2 Prayers of God s People OFFERING TO GOD OUR PRAYERS AND GIFTS Offering: Christian Aid Fund This fund allows the Service Deacons to help families in the church and community that need emergency financial assistance for such things as utility bills, mortgage payments, or any other unusual situation that arises. This is funded through freewill offerings, not budgeted. Offertory: The Coventry Carol and What Child Is This... arr. Gilliam/McCaskill GOD SPEAKS TO US *Hymn of Preparation: How Bright Appears the Morning Star...Lift Up Your Hearts #101 The Institution We give thanks to God the Father that our Savior, Jesus Christ, before he suffered, gave us this memorial of his sacrifice, until he comes again. At his last supper, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, he took the cup after supper and said, This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this in remembrance of me. For whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. (Corinthians 11:23-26). Therefore we proclaim our faith as signed and sealed in this sacrament: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Scripture: Jeremiah 33:14-16 (page 831) Sermon: Whistling in the Dark... Pastor Laura de Jong Prayer of Application *Hymn of Application: God Reigns, Earth Rejoices... Lift Up Your Hearts #91 The Thanksgiving CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Pastor: Lift up your hearts. Congregation: We lift them up to the Lord! Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Congregation: It is right for us to give thanks and praise. Pastor: With joy we praise you, gracious God, for you have created heaven and earth, made us in your image, and kept covenant with us even when we fell into sin. We give you thanks for Jesus Christ, our Lord, who was exalted as King of the universe, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow. Therefore we join our voices with all the saints and angels and the whole creation to proclaim the glory of your name. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty... Lift Up Your Hearts #538:1 Prayer of Consecration Lord, our God, send your Holy Spirit so that this bread and cup may be for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. May we and all your saints be united with Christ and remain faithful in hope and love. Gather your whole church, O Lord, into the glory of your kingdom. We pray in the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. The gifts of God for the people of God. Please come forward down the center aisle to receive the elements. As you are served you will hear the words The body of Christ, broken for you, the blood of Christ, shed for you. O Day of Peace... Josh Garrels Luke Enders We Will Feast in the House of Zion... see screen Congregation

3 Congregation in Christ, since the Lord has fed us at his table, let us praise his holy name with thanksgiving. Response from Psalm 103: Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion. Here s to your Health: Advent is a time that we joyously anticipate the birth of our Savior but in our everyday lives, December can be month filled with high expectations, uncomfortable social gatherings and stressful preparation. Here are a few thoughts about keeping stress levels under control this holiday season: 1. Ask God to help us establish priorities. 2. Be realistic. Things do not have to be perfect. In fact, lowering the bar may help others to feel more comfortable. 3. Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are. 4. Don t abandon healthy habits. Try to eat healthy foods, get some regular exercise and sleep. 5. Take time to breathe deeply! A breath prayer is a useful tool in reducing stress. Let's remember to watch out for increasing levels of stress this holiday season. We will all be healthier for it! children s ministries - Mary Retsema Teacher: David Brace Helper: Deb Wagenmaker Lesson: Ruth (The Choice) Teacher: Victoria McCarthy Little Lambs 2-4 year olds ************** Walk Out Worship (K - 4th grade) Offering: Solar water heaters for Uganda $15.00 each.
