2 Page 2 From the Pastor WHAT BRINGS PEOPLE TO CHURCH FOR THE FIRST TIME? Do you remember why you first came to Dr. Martin Luther? Was it because the building looked cool with the four pillars out front? Did you hear that the pastor told good jokes? Did you see an advertisement in the newspaper or on a web site? There was a study done once that asked 10,000 people what brought them to church for the first time. Only two to three percent indicated that they noticed the church and walked in on their own. Door to door visitation by the pastor or other church members brought in another small amount: one to two percent. The vast majority of newcomers came at the invitation of a friend or a relative: 75 to 90 percent. Clearly a person to person connection or relationship brings people to visit and join a Christian community. On Sunday, September 8 you will have a chance to follow the call of Jesus to go to all nations baptizing and teaching. Dr. Martin Luther is sponsoring a special Bring-A-Friend Sunday. Friends will receive a special gift, we will be serving Schaum Torte for refreshments between services and everyone who brings a friend will be entered into a Raffle for a gift certificate. It will be a fun day for everyone involved. I hope you are praying for that friend, co-worker or relative that you will bring to worship with you on Sunday, September 8 th. I already know who I am going to invite!! God s Blessings, Pastor Larry Healing Services will be held September 7 and 8 Quilting for Lutheran World Relief Quilters will meet on Wednesday, September 18 in fellowship hall to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. You do not need to know how to sew to help with this project. Special Congregational Meeting Sunday, September 15 at 11:30AM in Fellowship Hall If you were unable to join us at our first get together we are offering a second opportunity to hear a presentation on the Master Facility Plan followed by question and answer time. Men s Retreat September 21 and 22 The Men s Retreat this year is being held on September 21 and 22. The theme is the Joy of Creation. We will be reflecting on the Creation stories from Genesis and the Care of Creation emphasis in the Bible. The retreat is being held at The River Inn in Boscobel, Wisconsin. The cost is $75.00 per person. Please sign up in the back of the sanctuary. Bell Choirs We are in the process of recruiting players for the September May 2014 season for Youth Hand Bell choir, and the Adult Hand Bell Choir (aka Heaven s Bells). We are in need of a few more players to join either group on a regular basis, and a few that would help as substitutes for services on an as needed basis - occasionally. Rehearsals are generally on Wed. nights: 6:00 pm 6:50 pm for the adult choir, and 7-7:30 for the youths. Each group typically performs in church on one Sunday early service a month, and Heaven s Bells typically plays for services related to most of the major holidays. Previous experience is not a requirement although music reading skills is a plus. Music concepts are taught, as well as technique. Both groups tend to have a great time. Rehearsals will begin September 11. Please interim director, Dave Magedanz dm2712@att.com or call , with questions or your availability.

5 Volunteer Opportunities at DMLC Are you looking for a way to help out at church? Recently, one of our fairly new members asked me about St. Ben's. We both decided it was time to describe in detail DMLC's process of feeding those less fortunate in Milwaukee. If you have any information or experiences from St. Ben's that you would like to share with our members, please send me an . I would like to include these in next month's Portico. From time to time I would like to make volunteering a bit more personal. If you would like for me to focus on your ministry, please get in touch with me. There are at least "80" opportunities that we can serve God thru our Outreach, Worship & Music, Empower to Grow and Administration and Finance ministries. How about sharing with others, your reasons for joining a certain ministry. We all have a story, and it should be told. BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY - Sunday, September 8th By now, you have probably invited that special friend to join you in worship on September 8th. There will be special music along with members serving their "schaum torte" as a special treat. We will be serving this dessert between Sunday morning services in Fellowship Hall approximately 10:00 am. Each "friend" that you bring will receive a special gift. We are also planning on one "lucky" member who brings a friend to receive a thank you gift. This could be your "lucky" day. Looking forward to seeing you and also welcoming your "special friend". COMMUNITY MEAL - September 30th It is our turn to set-up, prepare, and serve the Community Meal held at UCC church on Concord Road. This meal will be served from 5:00-6:00 pm. on Monday, September 30th. Please be sure to watch for the insert in your weekend bulletins. This will explain the necessary food donations and opportunities for you to serve. Monetary donations are always appreciated as well. Many thanks to each and everyone of you. Your dedication does not go unnoticed. Bobbie Dierbeck Volunteer Coordinator Page 5 Attention 7th and 8th Grade Students and Parents There will be an information meeting on Wednesday September 11 at 6 pm in the fellowship Hall for all 7 th and 8th grade students and their parents. Over 420 people were served. When finished, they ate with remaining guests. Anyone is able to help volunteer with this meal program. Super Kids is meeting September 7, 9:30-11:00am. We will be planning our community service projects and fellowship activities for the year. Please contact Lesley Kountz with any questions. Lesley.kountz@yahoo.com or call Update from Athens! Wow! What an amazing week we had for Vacation Bible School! With 68 kids and 27 volunteers, we sang, danced, questioned, learned and created. Every day we had a visit from Paul and his friend Dionysius who taught us all about the ups and downs of teaching God s word. We were even chased down by an angry mob, but Paul knew what to do and kept us safe. We gave our sins to Jesus by hanging them on the cross, dressed in armor and rode into battle, made beautiful jeweled pottery, ate Olympic torches, sang praises to our savior, and sent messages in Bible books to children in India! Our end of the week Potluck Celebration was a record breaker with attendance rising from 90 to 145! Now that s an Oikos!! All of this would not be possible without all of the caring and giving that comes from our church family. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who supported our fundraiser, donated extra funds or supplies and to those who were able to come every day and be a part of our market place. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! What s New In Sunday School! Rally Day! Bring A Friend!! September 8 th is the first day of Sunday School and a great day to bring a friend! We will gather as a large group to kick off the new year, meet our teachers, welcome new friends and learn about our part in God s plan! We ll begin during the 9:00 service with a blessing for our incredible Sunday School Team. Parents can register by printing off the form ed to them and mailing it to church or bringing it to Rally Day. There will also be forms available that day. All families are invited and kids should definitely bring a friend! This is also a great time to bring in a donation for our Children s Table during coffee hour. Examples include mini doughnuts, cookies, goldfish, pretzels, popcorn, etc. More information and a server schedule will be ed to families. The schedule is also found in your portico. See you all on Rally Day!

Earlier this year the nation was captivated by a stunningly large tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma, and our friends in the Fox Valley just sustained millions of dollars in damage after a series of tornadoes and strong winds on August 7. The stories are heart wrenching and difficult, overwhelmingly focused on loss and destruction. But it is also right to remember and lift up the work and support of disaster response professionals and volunteers who provide critical aid in times of crisis, including Lutheran social ministry organizations and congregations across the country who act in collaboration with Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR). Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, with LDR, assists individuals and communities in the long term recovery process following a disaster. This may include offering spiritual and emotional support, volunteer coordination, respite care for clergy, and financial support (cash donations preferred) to support assisting families with recovery. LSS is a member of Wisconsin Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), a consortia of faith based and not-for-profit organizations. WI VOAD agencies collaborate with each other to maximize the availability of assistance from their members following a disaster. In addition, LSS works in partnership with various Lutheran bodies, including synods and congregations, to provide disaster preparedness training and consultation to congregation members. September is National Preparedness Month. In that spirit, please consider utilizing these disaster preparedness resources for your congregation and household: Visit Ready Wisconsin at or Michigan Prepares at michiganprepares for information on making a family disaster plan and checklists for a household disaster kit Worship resources for times of disaster can be found at the-world/lutheran-disaster-response/congregational- Resources.aspx Consider purchasing a weather radio for your home and have one available in the church to receive timely notifications of severe weather and hazardous conditions Ensure your cell phone is set up to receive emergency alerts; for more information visit consumer_info/safety/index.cfm/aid/12082 For more information about LSS and LDR, please visit and
