2 The Four Pillars of Stewardship This Week FROM FR. BILL S CORNER What are the Ten Commandments? I asked this question in a recent homily because they are some of the very foundation stones of our faith. The Ten Commandments were given to Moses by God (Exodus 20:2-17) as a call to faithfulness faithfulness to God and also faithfulness to the community (the People of God). As Christians we should know them, be able to recite them without hesitation and live them each day. In the weeks ahead, I will touch upon each Commandment and provide a brief commentary from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I ask that you reflect upon these Commandments, share them with your family and friends and use them as guides for a peaceful life of harmony with God and your neighbors. From the Catechism: The Decalogue in Sacred Scripture 2056 The word "Decalogue" means literally "ten words."11 God revealed these "ten words" to his people on the holy mountain. They were written "with the finger of God,"12 unlike the other commandments written by Moses.13 They are pre-eminently the words of God. They are handed on to us in the books of Exodus14 and Deuteronomy.15 Beginning with the Old Testament, the sacred books refer to the "ten words,"16 but it is in the New Covenant in Jesus Christ that their full meaning will be revealed The Decalogue must first be understood in the context of the Exodus, God's great liberating event at the center of the Old Covenant. Whether formulated as negative commandments, prohibitions, or as positive precepts such as: "Honor your father and mother," the "ten words" point out the conditions of a life freed from the slavery of sin. The Decalogue is a path of life: If you love the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, then you shall live and multiply.17 This liberating power of the Decalogue appears, for example, in the commandment about the sabbath rest, directed also to foreigners and slaves: You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out thence with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm The "ten words" sum up and proclaim God's law: "These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them upon two tables of stone, and gave them to me."19 For this reason these two tables are called "the Testimony." In fact, they contain the terms of the covenant concluded between God and his people. These "tables of the Testimony" were to be deposited in "the ark." The "ten words" are pronounced by God in the midst of a theophany ("The LORD spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire."21). They belong to God's revelation of himself and his glory. The gift of the Commandments is the gift of God himself and his holy will. In making his will known, God reveals himself to his people The gift of the commandments and of the Law is part of the covenant God sealed with his own. In Exodus, the revelation of the "ten words" is granted between the proposal of the covenant22 and its conclusion - after the people had committed themselves to "do" all that the Lord had said, and to "obey" it.23 The Decalogue is never handed on without first recalling the covenant ("The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.") The Commandments take on their full meaning within the covenant. According to Scripture, man's moral life has all its meaning in and through the covenant. The first of the "ten words" recalls that God loved his people first: Since there was a passing from the paradise of freedom to the slavery of this world, in punishment for sin, the first phrase of the Decalogue, the first word of God's commandments, bears on freedom "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery The Commandments properly so-called come in the second place: they express the implications of belonging to God 1

3 con't from page 1: through the establishment of the covenant. Moral existence is a response to the Lord's loving initiative. It is the acknowledgement and homage given to God and a worship of thanksgiving. It is cooperation with the plan God pursues in history The covenant and dialogue between God and man are also attested to by the fact that all the obligations are stated in the first person ("I am the Lord.") and addressed by God to another personal subject ("you"). In all God's commandments, the singular personal pronoun designates the recipient. God makes his will known to each person in particular, at the same time as he makes it known to the whole people. You make a difference! As we approach the end of the fiscal year, we want to thank you for your generous giving. Through your sharing of treasure, our ministries are able to extend the scope of their mission and increase the number of people they reach. Elizabeth Ministry: Through your giving, the Elizabeth Ministry was able to throw a wonderful Easter Egg Hunt for our families, provide meals for several new mothers, and provide beautiful wooden burial boxes for miscarried and stillborn babies. Our Choir: Your giving helped provide warm hospitality during the Christmas season to the large number of people that attended Carols with the Choir. We were able to have a festive reception afterward with warm beverages and refreshments to celebrate the joyful season! Mary's Cousins Prayer Shawl Ministry: Because of the generosity of our parishioners, Mary's Cousins was able to purchase enough yarn to crochet and knit many projects. The fiscal year was very productive for us and more importantly for the recipients of our labors. It included over 45 prayer shawls were presented to parishioners, family, friends and RCIA, 175 baby blankets were donated to Catholic Charities, over 1000 stocking hats for children, women and men were donated to homeless shelters, school clothing closets and food pantries in our community, as well as 10 (and counting!) infant baptismal shawls presented to those receiving the sacrament. Thank You!!! hospitality Save the Date: Mass in the Park September 9th, 11:00 AM Willamette Park in West Linn Children's Adoration & Summer Playdates: Elizabeth Ministry will be hosting summer playdates! 4 prayer Mass Readings & Observances for the Week of June 24 Liturgical colors for priestly vestments are reflected in the table. Multiple colors denote multiple options for that day. Green = Ordinary Time, white = feasts, red = Pentecost/ feasts of martyrs, violet = Advent, Lent. Making summer plans? Plan to discern God s will for love in your life! The Dominican Nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery in Menlo Park, California are hosting a Come and See Day on Saturday, July 21st, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Single, Catholic women between the ages of 18 and 38 years are invited to learn more about discerning God s call and to experience a taste of the life of a cloistered Dominican nun. To learn more or to register for our July 21st Come and See Day, or any of our other upcoming day retreats, contact Sister Joseph Marie, O.P. at vocations@opnunsmenlo.org or visit For those outside the San Francisco Bay Area, the nuns have limited accommodations for overnight guests, but they fill quickly! Contact them to confirm availability before registering online. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK As we celebrate today's feast, we are reminded that God creates and fashions each one of us with intent and purpose. We are not random accidents. We are special creations and wonderfully made. Each of us brings a unique twist to the one shot at life that we are given. As people of faith and children of God, we are asked to use our specialness to announce God's kingdom. Each of us reveals a unique part of God's face. Each day presents opportunities to communicate our faith to others and to reveal God's mercy. We have the means to point the way to Christ. How can we show Jesus to others today? EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS What power lies in a name? Have you ever met a "David," "Holly," or "Jack" and said, "They don't look like a David, Holly, or Jack"? Sometimes our name actually adds something to our person. Peculiar people sometimes have peculiar names. Some people of tremendous strength have names that we deem strong as well. Sometimes we give nicknames to people because of some attributes they exhibit. In the Bible, names mean a lot. Saul changes his name to Paul when he converts. Adam means "man," as in the first man. Eve means "to live" or "to breathe." Elizabeth took great care to name her son John as God commanded, even if other family members did not understand why such a unique name not found in their lineage. It was a unique name for a child who had a unique future of preparing the way for the Messiah. We have our baptismal names, our surnames, our Confirmation names, and our maiden names. But all disciples of Jesus also bear the same name: Christian. People may wonder what does a David, Holly, or Jack really look like, but they should never wonder what a Christian looks like. Unfortunately, too often those who bear this name don't resemble the characteristics embodied in the name. Simply, a Christian looks like Christ. A Christian acts like Christ. A Christian truly is Christ to a world that seeks to uncover the true meaning of his name. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS 3 Prayer for the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles - Friday, June 29 Lord Jesus Christ, you called Saint Peter from a life he knew, to follow you alone, giving up all he'd known before. Despite his failings and lack of faith in you and himself, you entrusted to him the keys of the kingdom of heaven, granting him such faith that he embraced martyrdom. You called Saint Paul from the life he knew, a life of such zeal that he became misguided, hurting you by hurting those who followed you. You changed him from an angry persecutor to the greatest missionary the Church has ever seen, and to one who welcomed death as the means to see you. When I am called to do your will, change my spirit and grant that I can give up the little you ask of me, when Peter and Paul gave so much. Amen.

5 formation Do you know someone who has a longing to know God and is seeking to deepen their faith in Jesus? If so, tell them about RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults a process of adult faith formation and learning about our Catholic faith and teaching. RCIA is specifically for: *Christians who have been baptized in a faith tradition other than the Catholic Church and want to join our Church. *People who have a background in a religion other than Christianity, or do not belong to any religion at all, and are seeking to know God. *Catholics who were baptized as babies and want to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. There will be an introductory RCIA session on Thursday, August 23 at 7 PM in the Fireside Room of the Parish Office building. For more information, contact the Parish Office. See the parish website for a registration form and the RCIA calendar for Adult Vacation Bible School June 25, 2018, 7:00 PM - June 29, 2018, 8:15 PM at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Join us as we discern the various voices in the Psalms and add our own voices to them in prayer. We will be using methods of discernment culled from centuries of Christian interpretation of the Psalms by Fr. Jeremy Driscoll, OSB (Abbot of Mt. Angel Monastery). After an introductory lecture, the sessions promise to be very interactive. We will even compose our own psalms! The Psalms we will examine will be provided, but do bring a Bible (or Bible app for tablet/smartphone) if you have one. Free. Registration is not required. Led by Cynthia Wong, MAPM. SEEL (Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life) Retreat The Spiritual Exercises are composed of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God. The Exercises present a pathway to deeper prayer, good decisions guided by keen discernment, and an active life of service to others. Deadline to apply is August 1st. Find us online at WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: June 24 celebrates the feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. How was that date chosen and why? Answer: The date set for John the Baptist's birth only came into existence once the date to celebrate Jesus' birth was set. Evidence shows that by the middle of the fourth century Christians were celebrating the birth of Jesus around December 25. No one at that time knew when Jesus was born, but the date seemed to be selected to counter the Roman festival to the sun god. Once December 25 had been selected for the birth of Jesus, a number of other dates could be set, using the biblical evidence at hand. When the angel appeared to Mary and she conceived, her cousin, Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, was in her sixth month. If Jesus was born on December 25, then he had to be conceived nine months before, on March 25. If Elizabeth was then in her sixth month, then John the Baptist was due three months later on June 25. Then why June 24? A rather convincing reason stems from John's witness in John's Gospel. There John the Baptist says that Jesus must increase and he, John, must decrease. The other Gospels also have John point to Jesus and not himself as the chosen one of God. In making John's birth a day less than Jesus' full nine months, the Christian community communicated this Gospel reality in its liturgical calendar. Thus the Christian community continued to highlight John's mission and ministry. Maybe we could strive toward that same mission in our own lives. ALL HANDS ON DECK! Calling all adults and youth (entering 6th grade and up). Come help lead our participants (age 3 through 5th grade) at VBS!
