Australia As children in Adelaide, South Australia, we heard of our gr. gr. gr. grandfather, Dr William Carey and his work in India so long ago. Much later in 1980 one of our cousins, Flo Harwood, who for many years worked as a missionary in India, mentioned that she had a letter written by William Carey, as well as a number of letters written to Anna Pearce, later Carey. These letters were dated from 1810 to 1831 and had been in Flo's mother's possession since the death of her mother Florence Buttfield Shepherd in Thus began our interest in Anna Pearce and her daughter Anna Louisa Carey Buttfield. As we contacted long lost relations around Australia, we found more letters written to Anna Pearce Carey. Sometime after Anna's death in India in 1832, her husband Jonathan Carey must have given them to their daughter Anna Louisa. The letters travelled many miles over the years - England to India, back to England, to British Honduras, back to England, then to Australia. After Anna Louisa (Carey) 1

Buttfield's death in 1862 the letters were divided among her children. In addition, there were letters written to Anna Louisa and her husband John Buttfield up to The texts of approximately 100 letters have now been photocopied and transcribed, the earliest written 180 years ago. Copies of the letters are now with Angus Library, Regent's Park College, Oxford. ANNA PEARCE CAREY Anna (1797) was the second daughter of Samuel Pearce and Sarah (Hopkins) of Birmingham. Her siblings were Louisa (1792), William Hopkins and two others. Two died in infancy. Anna was named for her maternal grandmother Anna Ash. Anna's father Samuel Pearce, the minister of the Cannon Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, hoped to join his friend William Carey in India; however his delicate health, sapped by tuberculosis, did not allow him to travel. Samuel has been described as a silvertongued orator who travelled many miles to preach and to help the mission cause in India. Samuel died, aged 33, in March 1799; Sarah died five years later. Anna was cared for by Mr Stephen King and his wife of Birmingham, while William Hopkins was adopted by the Rev. William Nichols of Collingham, near Nottingham. William Hopkins attended Bristol College for an Arts course. Four years later he trained as a printer at the Oxford Press where he lived at the home of the Oxford printer, Mr Collingwood. In 1810 Anna was still in Birmingham with the Kings, but by 1815 she had moved to London where she lived with the Tebbs family in Church Lane, Chelsea. Mr Tebbs, an attorney, was by accounts a rather testy gentleman. His wife Mary and daughters Julia and Eliza with the help of Anna cared for and taught a group of underprivileged children from Battersea. Anna formed a close bond with the Tebbs family and the Battersea children: Willie, Emma, Letitia, Harriet and others. All the children seemed to have severe health problems. Anna's brother William Hopkins Pearce and his wife Martha (Blakemore) left for India in William set up the Baptist printing press and joined the mission work in Calcutta. He subsequently invited Anna to join them in India. In a letter written by Mr King in 1821 he warned Anna of the dangers to her health, of life in India and diplomatically warned her not to go. Anna, then 24 years old, decided to go. In a subsequent letter the Tebbs urged Anna, who was visiting friends in Birmingham, to collect her belongings and pack, as time for departure was imminent. A group of her friends travelled by coach from London to Portsmouth to see her on board. Each week thereafter Anna's friends took turns writing to her, letters which took a long time to reach India and to receive a reply. One letter took eight months to reach Anna in India. The letters were filled with longing to see Anna again and with messages of love from the children at Chelsea. Anna arrived in India on 15 December After spending some time with William H. and Martha, she moved in with Mr and Mrs Lawson to help run the boarding school. Anna also travelled by ship to missions in Penang and Malacca. The mission women wrote to Anna later, asking her to send them various things from India. About 1824 Anna met Jonathan Carey, youngest son of William Carey. During a recent visit to Oxford with Kay and Michael Carey, we visited Angus Library and were given copies of letters written by Anna to Jonathan between July and October These letters were "chits" sent almost daily to Jonathan, who wrote in the same manner. Once again sickness was the main topic, so many ill with fever and cures such as applying leeches to the temples. Anna was very ill for some weeks, with no visitors allowed. But then mention was made of "the cake" and a pig, presumably for the wedding reception, and furnishings for their home. Lucy, daughter of Felix Carey, was Anna's bridesmaid. Anna's letters were gentle, sympathetic and thoughtful. I wish we could see Jonathan's replies. Then the letters ceased. They were married. A year later their daughter Anna Louisa Carey was born. William Carey wrote to his son Jabez with news of the birth. Anna Louisa's brother Jonathan Pearce Carey was born on 9 August 1827 and in 1830 William Hopkins Carey, a sickly baby who suffered fevers in his early years. Anna Pearce, having lost a fourth child, died at the age of 35 in William wrote to Jabez: "Anna was a very excellent wife and mother and 2

they lived in great harmony. I went down after we heard of her death but was not at the funeral as that took place the evening before. It was a favourable providence that Mr Penney and Lucy were able to move immediately to live with him and take care of the house and children." ANNA LOUISA CAREY A year later Jonathan escorted his three children to England, where he saw them settled with the Rev. Gotch and his wife at Hemel Hempstead. Their grandfather's sisters Mary Carey and Ann Hobson also lived at Hemel Hempstead. We know little of this time. Jonathan returned to India. In 1841 Anna Louisa attended school at Chesham, not far from Hemel Hempstead. Jonathan and William attended Mill Hill School in Their letters to Anna were affectionate. Another letter written to Anna Louisa from her Aunt Mary Carey, who was paralysed and had the use of only one arm, mentions Anna's baptism by immersion at the Boxmoor Baptist Church. Anna and her brothers were baptised by the Rev. Gotch in Their father Jonathan, having returned to Hemel Hempstead from India, met and married young Sarah Buttfield in Anna Louisa met Sarah's brother John Parker Buttfield at the Boxmoor Baptist Church, and on 25 October 1844 they were married. This created a most confusing set of relationships! John Parker Buttfield offered his services as printer and missionary in Belize, British Honduras. He and Anna Louisa sailed three weeks after their marriage and arrived in Belize in December Anna Louisa and John's first two children, Edward John and Emilie Anna, were born in Belize. A letter written by John to his sister Sarah Carey in 1847 reveals a strained silence between Anna Louisa and her father Jonathan Carey. Jonathan and Sarah had two sons by this time, Arthur Douglas and Francis James. They had a further three children: Emma Blanche (1848), Alfred Edward (1852) and Frederick George (1852). In 1847 Anna Louisa and John returned to England where John expressed his interest in aiding the Baptist Missionary Society in Australia. Within months they sailed on board the 'Baboo' for South Australia, where they arrived on 5 December Anna Louisa gave birth to Spencer Carey Buttfield as the ship crossed Spencer Gulf, two days out of Port Adelaide. A diary written by a passenger on the 'Baboo' reveals what a difficult journey it was. From London to the tip of the Cornish coast took one month. During the three month voyage 3 the ship did not land at any port, they ran short of fresh water, they were becalmed. John Buttfield preached each Sunday afternoon on the deck. His words were a comfort to the man who wrote the diary. Anna Louisa was now 22 and John 26. Soon after their arrival in South Australia they were living at Gumeracha where John was the first paid minister of the Salem Baptist Church. By the end of the year they had moved to the Kenton Valley Chapel, where they stayed for two years, before settling at Uley. John was the minister at the Uley Chapel for twelve years. He also farmed and was the first school master at the local school. Anna Louisa, arriving in Australia with a baby and two young children, gave birth to eight more children in fourteen years: Herbert Pearce (1850), Felix Montgomery (1852), Fannie Louisa (1853), William Septimus (1854), Helen Eva (1855), Montague Frederick (1858), Florence Clara (1860), and Percy Algernon (1862). Percy was 3 1 / months old 2 when Anna Louisa died of heart failure, or "dropsy". Anna was buried in the grounds of the Uley Chapel, her grave marked by two headstones, one of white marble and the other of slate. One inscription read "In memory of Anna Louisa, beloved wife of John Parker Buttfield first minister of the adjoining place of worship. Grand-daughter of the late Rev Dr Carey of the Serampore Mission, Calcutta. Died July 1, 1862 aged 36 years." John wrote to his sister Sarah with the news of Anna's death, wondering how he would survive without her. But he did.

His eleven children all lived, most married and their descendants multiplied. There are well over 1,000 descendants living in all states of Australia. Many proudly have included the name Carey. SNIPPET Two of the 10 bells in Moulton Parish Church are dedicated to the memory of William Carey. One bears the inscription based on a reversal of his surname: Young people Expect great things of God Remember Attempt great things for God CAREY. To mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Baptist Missionary Society a peal was rung at Moulton on Saturday 24th October 1992 and called Carey Delight Royal. 5 EUSTACE CAREY missionary to India by David Allen Having read Carey Harrison's fascinating "Memories of the Eustace Line" in the last Newsletter, I thought that as another great great grandson of Eustace I would like to follow it up with a short account of Eustace's life. It is a story well worth telling. Eustace was born on 22 March 1791 at Paulerspury. He was the son of Thomas Carey, a soldier who was the younger brother of Dr William Carey. He joined the Baptist Church in 1809 and went in August of that year to study for the ministry under the Rev. Mr Sutcliff at Olney. He was still engaged on this in April 1811 when in a letter to his Uncle William in India he wrote: "My desire for coming to India is very great. I often feel much pleasure in attempting to preach the glorious gospel; and when I think of its rich and wonderful discoveries, I long to make them known to such who have never heard of the name of a crucified and compassionate saviour." In 1812, Eustace went to Bristol College as a missionary student where his power as a preacher was soon recognised, but also his physical frailty. As a fellow student later remarked: "Many thought him destined to rest in an early grave at home, rather than buffet with the storms of a long voyage, and then encounter the hardships of a foreign land." However, he was determined to go, which he did on board the 'Europe' when it sailed from Portsmouth on 22 February He was not alone, as two months previously he had married Mary Fosbrook, from Leicester. The voyage to Calcutta took more than five months and while still on the ship Eustace wrote to his uncle on 4 July "to inform you that Mrs Carey and myself are on the way to Bengal and are now in sight of Madras." He had in fact come out to India under a missionary licence issued under the new East India Charter Act of 1813, and was the first missionary to land in India after the act came into force. Eustace and Mary were made very welcome at Serampore. A few months later his uncle, in a letter to his sisters in England, wrote: "Eustace and his wife are tolerably well. I think he is better than he was in England. Eustace will stay at Serampore, being chosen to make one of the missionary family. He is universally beloved." Eustace had been invited by his uncle "to take oversight of the native church, instruct native enquirers, and give attentions to such native brethren as were devoting themselves to preaching among the heathen." He set about learning Bengali. In January 1816, Eustace and another young missionary named John Lawson were appointed Co-Pastors of the Lall Bazar Chapel within the city of Calcutta. This Chapel had been opened in 1809 as the first Nonconformist Church in Calcutta. Lawson had responsibility for work among the English in the city and Eustace was the first resident European missionary in Calcutta whose time was devoted to work among the Indians. At that time, William Carey wrote of him that "he is a very good preacher, and much esteemed." By the beginning of 1817, Eustace and Lawson and another young missionary, William Yates, had formed a missionary family union in Calcutta, and were later joined by W H Pearce and James Penney. Unfortunately, misunderstanding arose between them and the senior missionaries at Serampore, and eventually the Circular Road Chapel in Calcutta was established by the group in the city, to which Eustace devoted all his energies. His health, however, had continued to be precarious, with a particularly serious bout of illness occurring in the autumn of 1816 which a month at sea helped to alleviate. He and Mary also suffered family sorrows - of the five children born to them while in India, three died in infancy and another, Annie Yates, at the age of six. Only their son William, born in 1815, survived to adulthood and through his marriage to Sarah Copsey started the senior of the two 5

'Eustace lines' in our Family Association. William was able to remember the missionary family union in which he had lived as a small child. He later wrote: "The mission family resided in a large white house, at the north end of Calcutta, on the high road to Barrackpore. This family consisted of Mr and Mrs Penney, Mr and Mrs Yates, and Mr and Mrs Carey. Mr and Mrs Lawson resided in the Circular Road, where Mrs Lawson kept a ladies' school. Mr Pearce resided in the same road, at the mission press. These five families united together their several incomes, and formed one fund for the supply of their daily necessities, so that, while each family bore its share of the gross expenditure, they had, in this most happy union, 'all things common'." This was indeed a truly christian community (as similarly described in the Acts of the Apostles, 2:44). By 1820, the differences between the senior and junior missionaries had ended, and Eustace continued at the Circular Road Chapel until his health had deteriorated to the point where he could stay in India no longer. On doctor's orders, he very sadly left Calcutta on the American ship 'Factor' in June 1824 with his wife and young son, and was never to return. The family travelled first to Philadelphia where they stayed for several months and another baby, Annie, was born to them. They reached England in August 1825 and until his death thirty years later Eustace worked tirelessly for the Baptist Missionary Society, preaching up and down the country and seeking support for the foreign missions. Eustace's health remained frail and he suffered another sad blow in July 1829 by the untimely death of his wife. However, five years later he remarried - to Esther Cook who came from the village of Mellis, in Norfolk. They lived initially in Camberwell, where their son Eustace was born in 1836, and then for five years in Hertfordshire before returning to London. Eustace died of a stroke in his home in Camden Town in July 1855 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery. His widow survived him by 29 years. She wrote a biography of him which was published in 1857, the year that she moved to Cheshire with her son Eustace when he started his 56 years' career in the chemical industry. He was the first of four generations of the 'Eustace line' to work in the part of that industry which, in 1926, became ICI. But that is another story. As one of the many descendants of Eustace who are Roman Catholics, I have often wondered what he would have thought about this. I think the clue lies in the following anecdote recorded in Mrs Carey's biography of him: "On one of his journeys a Roman Catholic priest claimed acquaintance with him, taking him, greatly to his amusement, to be a Jesuit father. In replying to the question whether he were not Father, Mr Carey told him he was somewhat mistaken. He managed, nevertheless, to continue a most agreeable conversation with the priest, and to press home into his block of error one or two, to him, unorthodox wedges." Mrs Carey added a comment about her husband's "great liberality and oneness of heart with all followers of Christ." He was indeed a steadfast follower of Christ and one whom it is a privilege to have as an ancestor. SNIPPET The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, said in a letter to a family member that he knew of Dr William Carey and his work in India but, so far as he knew, he was not related to him. Kay Carey SNIPPET William Carey, his father and grandfather were all associated with Northamptonshire but, at present, there are no known members of the Carey Family living in that county. The majority of the Family live in the south-east of England; Sussex 13; London 9; Surrey 8; Kent 4. The rest of us are dispersed in small numbers in 18 other counties, with two members in Scotland and 1 in Eire. We also have known members of the family in the USA, in Canada, in South Africa, in Australia and in New Zealand. So Dr Carey's interest in the world beyond Britain was continued in the 19th century by his descendants and is still continuing today. Kay Carey 6

CAREY FAMILY TREE The Carey Tree has grown a lot since the last reunion, especially the Jonathan line. This is partly due to information received from people attending the reunion; but largely because I have added a great deal from a book produced by the Buttfield family in Australia. Jonathan married Sarah Buttfield in Hemel Hempstead Parish Church on the 6th of November They had four sons and a daughter: William Hopkins Carey, Francis James Carey, Emma Blanche Carey, Alfred Edward Carey and Frederick George Carey. I have no descendants listed for them, so if anyone knows anything about them, please let me know. occupation, death, burial) with dates (just the year is sufficient, if the exact date is not known), places and so on. Very obviously if you wish to keep some things private, then don't tell me. That is the privilege of us all. Jonathan's daughter, Anna Louisa Carey (born 1826), married John Parker Buttfield in 1844, at the Baptist Chapel in Hemel Hempstead. So Anna married the younger brother of her father's wife, a real mix up of relationships! Anna and John eventually settled in South Australia and started the Buttfield dynasty, which became numerous and widespread. The "Tree" is now so large it is impossible to print off as one, in fact, the Jonathan tree is also too big to print sensibly all together now! Despite the large size I still need more information. There are lots of gaps to fill up, like the descendants of Jonathan and Sarah. Also, apart from early ancestors, I need your descendants and recent ancestors. Along with names and relationships I need events (birth, christening/baptism, education, marriage/divorce, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, presented a Doctorate to Dr William Carey for his Grammar of the Sangskrit Language. The signature is William Carey's when writing to thank Brown University for the Doctorate. 7
