Peace has to bubble from deep within. The starting point begins with the witness and introduction to prayer through the family. but teach them to your children and to your children s children Dt 4:9. In his general audience Dec. 28, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI encourages the family to teach the children from the tenderest age to pray. Responsible witness by teachers and statesmen to our youth is an integral part of the equation. As we mature in spiritual life, we can ask for God s assistance. Peace is her persis- tent theme in Medjugorje. My witness to peace is still a work in progress. So what can one do? I cannot achieve it on my own. No way! Impossible! Why? Because of Original Sin! Thank you for having responded to my call. Reflection on the Message of Our Lady by Fr. Charles Sellars, omi Prayer Prayer is larger than any formula, holding a splendid range of possibilities. The God who created unique fingerprints, snowflakes and more than a million kinds of insects must love variety. God relishes all the different voices of God s children, no matter how humbling they may sound. Furthermore, God starts the conversation coming to us in a myriad of ways. What does God call us to do? Bite your tongue when you want to defend yourself with cynicism. Be patient with those who step on your very last nerve. Listen to those who need someone to listen to them, no matter how needy they may be viewed as by others. Forgive again and again and again. Follow the example of Blessed Pope John XXIII:. Listen to everything, observe much, correct little. Peace and Joy of Living Each of us is loved by God. God plays no favorites. God simply regrets how often we decline or are slow to accept the graces offered to us. Sometimes these graces come in strange packaging in people, places and circumstances that we never expected. God is uninterested in our curiosity about where divine grace may appear next.god is interested only in how generously we cooperate with that grace. We all have our stories of God s grace at work in our lives. Those who are preparing for baptism have been touched by God s grace. The same is true for those being prepared to be received into full communion in the Catholic Church. Both groups and all of us will continue to encounter that grace if we keep our eyes and ears open. Everyone in our family, neighborhood, workplace, parish and community is loved by God. The Medjugorje Star

2 From the Heart continued from page 1. Strip in a mini bus. We had to stop, disembark and show our passports at one of several checkpoints. Our guide told us not to look to the left while exiting for fear that we might cause a problem. You see, the Americans were there in the middle of a war zone to see which country would fire their large millimeter guns first. We have seen the tension. The guards stationed in every elevator of our hotel in Tiberias had their fingers on the trigger of their rifles in a ready position. We have heard the explosions and have seen the sky light up at night across the Sea of Galilee. It is anything but peaceful. On one of the pilgrimages we led to the Holy Land back in the late 1980 s, the guide touched everyone s heart as we said our last goodbyes. His final words profoundly resonated down to the deepest recesses of our beings as we departed. He recognized that we were a Spirit-filled group. That solemn moment ended our pilgrimage. He was crying out for our prayer. His request continues to resonate within our hearts even to the present. He begged, Pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Ps 122:6). The Mount of Olives in Gethsemane overlooks the Kidron Valley. A short way down the hill is the chapel named Dominus Flavet, meaning, The Lord Wept. The church is constructed to resemble a teardrop and commands a powerful view of where the temple stood in Jerusalem. A little further down stands the Church of All Nations. Jesus knew how badly peace was needed for all His children of every nation. I believe Jesus chose this area on earth for His ministry, passion, and crucifixion to bring peace. When peace is achieved in the Middle East, peace may spread throughout the whole world. I am reminded of a saying seen on a sign: Know Jesus, Know Peace! No Jesus, No Peace! Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! In this, our second part of the Church s teachings on peace, let us be guided by the Holy Spirit to pray and bring about this peace of heart which Our Lady Queen of Peace invites us to. The Medjugorje Star 2 Re-education for Peace Men must not be content simply to support the efforts of others in the work for peace; they must also scrutinize their own attitudes. Statesmen, responsible as they are for the common good of their own nation and at the same time for the wellbeing of the whole world, are very much dependent on the opinions and convictions of the general public. Their efforts to secure peace are of no avail as long as men are divided or set against each other by feelings of hostility, contempt and distrust, by racial hatred or by inflexible ideologies. There is then a very great and urgent need to re-educate men and to provide fresh inspiration in the field of public opinion. Those engaged in education, especially among young people, and those who influence public opinion, should consider it a very serious responsibility to work for the re-education of mankind to a new attitude toward peace. We must all undergo a change of heart. We must look out on the whole world and see the tasks that we can all do together to promote the well-being of the family of man. We must not be misled by a false sense of hope. Unless antagonism and hatred are abandoned, unless binding and honest agreements are concluded, safeguarding universal peace in the future, mankind, already in grave peril, may well face, in spite of its marvelous advance in knowledge, that day of disaster when it knows no other peace than the awful peace of death. In saying this, however, the Church of Christ, living as it does in the midst of these anxious times, continues unwaveringly in hope. Time and again, in season and out of season, it seeks to proclaim to our age the message of the Apostle: Now is the hour of God s favor, the hour for a change of heart; now is the day of salvation. To build peace, the causes of human discord which feed the fires of war must first be eliminated, and among these especially the violations of justice. Many of these causes are due to gross economic inequality and delay in providing necessary remedies. Others arise from a spirit of domination and from a contempt for others, and, among more fundamental causes, from human envy, distrust, pride and other forms of selfishness. Since man cannot bear so many violations of due order, the result is that, even where war does not rage, the world is constantly plagued by human conflict and acts of violence. The same evils are also found in relations between nations. It is therefore absolutely necessary that international institutions should cooperate more effectively, more resolutely and with greater coordination of effort, in order to overcome or prevent these evils, and to check unbridled acts of violence. There must also be constant encouragement for creation of organizations designed to promote peace. 3 A Great Grace Through the Intercession of Fr. Slavko by Reverend Erich Cohen T Yes, may Jesus and Mary be praised! I am happy that so many people have come to give honor to the Mother of God. In a message she told us, Be witnesses, and so I wish to give witness to the glory of God and to the Mother of God, who have done so much good in my life. I come from a family in Tyrol, Austria, in which faith played no role whatsoever. We were very far away from God, but there was a woman, my grandmother, she was praying. She was praying for us. She has interceded for us, and through her intercession much good has come. She became old and forgetful. She even forgot to pray, we could say. But in me God had listened to her, and He planted the seed of faith in my heart. It began as a crisis. I was in love, and I was looking for the meaning in life. I was thinking about what is important and what is not important. I found a passage from the Bible in my memory, and it said, Do unto others what you would have done unto you. So I thought if this is in the Bible, I don t need to reflect much more. I will read the Bible, it would be quicker. So I started to spend a lot of time with the Bible and take a lot of time to read it. I was about 20 years old and a student. People came to me, like the Jehovah s Witnesses or the sect of Moon, and they invited me to walk with them. I actually walked with those sects for a time. It was not easy to get out of those sects. It was not easy. But I had a very strong experience, and I felt the love of God. That experience brought me to search for this God. Where does He live, this God? I was allowed to experience God while in the sect of Moon and the Jehovah s Witnesses. I woke up one day and I knew where my home was. I began to know who I was and to Whom I belonged. I don t know why. I was living in Innsbruck in the middle of the city. I went to the window, and the whole city was full of people. There were people on both sides of the street. I said to them, Why are you standing in the middle of the street? They said, The Pope is coming. I said, OK. I was standing on the road, and truly the Pope came in the pope mobile. He drove straight past the house I was living in; he was very close to me. I have never seen him since then. He was two meters away. The road was a very narrow one, and I was very close to him. Then I went to celebrate the Mass of the Pope with everybody. It was a very deep experience. In the spiritual battle in my soul, the topic was: Is Jesus really present in the Eucharist, or is it just a piece of bread? I decided that Jesus is present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. I decided He was there, and I was a member of the Catholic Church from then on. Every Sunday I went to Mass after that, and I was in love with God. I began to pray the rosary. Praying the rosary brought freedom in me, a deliverance in me. When I prayed it for the first time, there was truly dirt and dust around me. I felt that dirt and dust in my soul. I knew it. I saw that the rosary is the strongest prayer of protection because we take refuge under Our Lady s mantle. So how did I reach Medjugorje? My sister did not have much faith, and she was talking badly about Medjugorje and making jokes about it. His story is intertwined with Fr. Slavko in a special way. (Reprinted from the Medjugorje Herald, January 2012) badly about Medjugorje, there must be something to it. So how would I get there? I asked and found out about a lady from Innsbruck who did trips to Medjugorje. That lady did not do trips in 1993 because there was a war. So she told me to go to Herbert Lebeirer, who told me a bus from Bingen, Germany was going to Medjugorje. I had a good friend, a Carthusian, who gave me a golden book. He said that when the time has come, then read a bit in that golden book. Well, without knowing it, I was beginning the consecration to Mary. On the 30 th day of that consecration, I was in Medjugorje. And during the apparition time, I made my consecration to Mary. This is how I arrived in Medjugorje. I became active in prayer groups. For me this was a very special time because the family of the prayer group kept me in faith, encouraged me and carried me. So I can say that prayer groups are very important. When I finished my studies, I became a medical doctor. After studies, after I began work, I thought to open my own medical practice. [But first] I thought I would pray a bit, so I went to the Community of the Beatitudes and lived for a while in Austria. I liked the group very much and I wanted to enter them and stay there. But I went to Medjugorje for one year. When things were done, I thought I was going to get married, perhaps stay in Medjugorje as a doctor. There were very few of them at the time. I was happy with that plan and what I thought would be my life. One Friday we were doing the Way of the Cross. It was November 24 th and it was raining. I thought to myself, would I do the Way of the Cross on Krizevac or not? It was wet, cold and slippery, and I didn t feel like going. So I had my little battle and I said yes, I will join the Way of the Cross with the parish. Great Grace continued on page 4. The Medjugorje Star

4 Great Grace continued from page 3. When I reached the top, Fr. Slavko was before me with the group of the parish. When I arrived at the 13 th Station, I saw young people running, upset. I thought they were completely crazy because in the rain you don t run on that slippery earth on Krizevac. I went up and saw a priest sort of sitting between the rocks. I saw Fr. Slavko was dying. We prayed together, and in that moment, it was a mystical moment I must say, the rain stopped, a little rainbow appeared over the church. We all saw it. The clouds had full sun on them. I knew Fr. Slavko had joined heaven. Six of us carried him down. It was very difficult to carry him down. He was dead, but from the back he banged my back, knocked on my back with his arm. I remembered when I spoke with him for the first time that perhaps I had a vocation; he knocked my chest with his hand. First he knocked my heart in my chest, and this time he banged me on my back, saying, Come on, get going! I went down into the church, and without reason I started to cry for one or two hours. Since that moment, Fr. Slavko has interceded for a great gift for me, a great grace. It is not to look at myself, but to trust in God and serve man. That was the beginning of my path to priesthood. I left the community, went to Rome and went to the seminary Three years ago I became a priest. And so I can say that the Mother of God has encouraged and protected me in difficult situations. I want to thank her for everything she has done for us and all she is doing for us through her presence. I want to thank Fr. Slavko for his graces and his help. I want to thank Blessed John Paul II; I want to thank him who gave birth to me into the Church. He bore me into the Church. And may the Mother of God live in your hearts together with Jesus! I The Medjugorje Star 4 A Healing: Testimony of Margarita Rodriguez want to share with you some wonderful news of the day we had in our church, Saint Brendan s, the visit of Medjugorje visionary Ivan and the apparition of the Blessed Mother. On that day Our Lady asked her Son Jesus to take care of me. My big problem is that I have been short of breath, and that is because of my operation which was back in The doctor had to remove half of my diaphragm. Since then I have been very short of breath, but about a year ago I became much worse, and my right lung collapsed. I went to a specialist, a doctor of pulmonary disease. He sent me to do a scan and also a test to see how my oxygen level was. The test showed that I had less than 60% function in my lung. So I was really bad, with my shortness of breath. I have to sleep with three pillows to be able to sleep. When I am doing my housework, I do it, and then I have to rest. The doctor told me, I am sorry, Margarita, I can do nothing more to help you. You have to live with this condition the best way you can. I accepted what the doctor told me, and that was fine, and then I offered to Our Lord the little I have to offer Him. I said to Jesus, I offer the little that I have to You because You have suffered so much for us and our sins, and You continue your suffering for us. I went to my church to talk to Father Fernando Heria with my friend Mary Fernandez and her husband, Manolo, to discuss the preparation of the day Ivan was coming to Miami and the apparition of Our Blessed Mother. It was then that Father Fernando asked me to pray and lead the Rosary. I said yes, of course, and I was so happy, but then I was worried because of my acute shortness of breath and my cough. I prayed very hard to Our Mother and her Son Jesus to help me to pray well, as they both knew of my big problem. I asked them to help me so I could pray the rosary well on that special day in front of so many people, about 1,500 persons. When I went to the podium, I felt that I was in a cloud; a peace so strong came over me. I felt different and I prayed the rosary so well. Then after the apparition of Our Blessed Mother, I also prayed the Rosary of Medjugorje: The Creed and the 7 Our Father s, the 7 Hail Mary s and the 7 Glory Be s. That was on Friday, January 21, 2011, but it wasn t until Sunday the 23rd that I realized that I was fine and that I didn t have any shortness of breath. I didn t tell my husband anything at that time! I wanted to be sure first. I started checking myself and I began doing things in the house and I felt fine. When I went to bed that evening, I said, OK, now I am going to do a big test. I took the three pillows away that I always had to sleep on, and I was perfect, I was breathing perfectly. Then I said, now the final test, the way I always like to sleep, FLAT completely, with my stomach in the mattress, and I slept perfectly all night. Since that day, I continued sleeping that way with NO SHORTNESS OF BREATH. I feel so good, and so happy. Yesterday afternoon I went to see my doctor (Hugo Gonzalez, MD, pulmonary physician). I told him what happened, that I was feeling fine, and that I was no longer short of breath. He was so surprised and said to me, When Our Lord wants to do something for someone, HE does it, and HE did it for you, Margarita. So now I am beginning to tell about my healing, and I wanted to share with you this beautiful news. Margarita is from Miami, Florida

On February 29, 2012, The MIR Group will present its new Medjugorje film at what promises to be a full-house event. MIR secured the talent of filmmaker Steve Scaffidi to develop what we believe is more than just a movie. It s a movement that responds to Our Lady s directives in Medjugorje. Remember that as early in the apparitions as 1982 Our Lady explained to Mirjana that we must realize that Satan exists. She said that one day he appeared before the throne of God and asked permission to submit the Church to a period of trial. God gave him permission to try the Church for one century. Our Lady said that this century is under the power of the devil, but when the secrets confided to the visionaries in Medjugorje come to pass, his power will be destroyed. Our Lady said that even now he is beginning to lose his power and has become aggressive. This is why he is destroying marriages, creating division among priests and is responsible for obsessions and murder. She said that we must protect ourselves against these thing,; we must carry blessed objects on us and put them in our homes and return to the use of holy water, and that through fasting and prayer, especially through community prayer, we can defeat the plans of the devil. And so the Sojourners of the Burning Heart was born. About twice a month on Fridays these young people come together to pray the rosary, quote from scripture, share their life circumstances and carry out Our Lady s message of peace, prayer, fasting, reconciliation and conversion! In 1982 Gospa expressed the importance of community prayer, and the Sojourners have certainly responded to her call.
