They are new every morning. Great is God s faithfulness. Call to Confession Let us confess our sins to God, for God is faithful and loves us eternally. Prayer of Confession Holy God, we confess that we have sinned against you and have strayed from living wholeheartedly. Envy and fear have dulled our generosity, and we have grown mean and destructive. Forgive us our sins and return us to health through the grace and mercy of Christ. Amen. Declaration of Forgiveness Sisters and brothers, God loves us, forgives us, and frees us from our sins; therefore be at peace and love with boldness and generosity Prayers of the Day Steadfast God, you sent Jesus as witness that no one is outside your healing reach. Help us to trust in the abundance of your love as we share your compassion and generosity wherever we may go, with you, in Christ, and through the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, whose wisdom and whose love are over all, accept the prayers we offer for our nation. Give integrity to its citizens and wisdom to those in authority, that harmony and justice may be secured in obedience to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Prayer for Illumination Loving God, your Word has the power to restore our lives. Open our hearts to the presence of your Spirit, for you are mighty to save. Amen. 2

3 Scripture Wisdom of Solomon 1: 13-15, 2: Jim Bailey Because God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. For he created all things so that they might exist; the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them, and the dominion of Hades is not on earth. For righteousness is immortal. For God created us for incorruption, and made us in the image of his own eternity, but through the devil s envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his company experience it. Psalm 30 Refrain: You, O love, gave me strength to face my fears. All praise to you, O beloved, for you have raised me up, and have not let my fears overwhelm me. O compassionate one, I cried for help, and you comforted me. R You, O love, helped me release my soul from despair; you gave me strength to face my fears; now love is awakening in me. Sing praises to the beloved, all you saints, giving thanks to love s holy name. R Love withdraws when we close our hearts, yet ever awaits an open door. Now as you excel in everything - in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you - so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something - now finish doing it, so 3

4 that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has - not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written, "The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little." Gospel Mark 5: When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live." So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, "If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well." Immediately her haemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?" And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, 'Who touched me?'" He looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease." While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader's house to say, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?" But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe." He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cum," which means, "Little girl, get up!" And immediately the girl got up and began 4

5 to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. Hymn Sermon # 503 Fight the Good Fight with All Thy Might (Pentecost) The Apostle s Creed Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, The Reverend Kate Ann Follwell I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of Intercession The response to our prayers this morning is, restore our lives. Almighty God, you created the world for good; give to all leaders and people the wisdom to live in harmony with one another for the health of all creation. We pray for Elizabeth our Queen, Justin our Prime Minister, Doug our Premier, and Taso our mayor. O lover of souls, restore our lives You call your church to abound in generosity; we pray for Michael, our Bishop, and our clergy Michael, Kate Ann, and David; inspire us to share our abundance with our sister churches who are in need, that together we may be a sign of unity in Christ. In our Anglican cycle of prayer we pray for The Church of North India and The Most Rev. Dr. Prem Chand Singh. In our Diocesan cycle of prayer we pray for Leeds Rear, St. Luke s, Lyndhurst, the Ven. Nancy McLeod, and Rev. Trish Miller. In our Parish cycle of prayer we pray for Vicky MacLaren, Gwenda McBayne, Helen McCormick and their families. O lover of souls, restore our lives 5

Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts and upon our lives that together we may bring healing and hope to the world. In Christ s name we pray. Amen. Collect of the Day Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love fulfils the law. May we love you with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength, and may we love our neighbour as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. 6

What aspects of your life and ministry empty you of power? How do you discern healthy limits and habits for the care of yourself and others? Which spiritual practices do you find most revitalizing when your energy reserves are depleted? In such times, how does your faith make you whole? Household Prayer: Morning Good morning, God. Before this day takes hold of me and I am spread too thin by care, I come to you to sit quietly, for you are good to those who wait for you, to the soul that seeks your peace. Fill me with your life-giving presence; may all that I do this day be done with calm attention, for you are my strength and peace. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Thank you for helping me to become a more generous and attentive person this day. As I let go of all the things done and left undone this day, make me mindful that it is your strength and steadfast loving presence that keeps my faith whole and fills me with a quiet confidence.
