1 O N W A R D The Newsletter of the Moravian Mission Society, Southern Province September 2018 Volume XXXVIII Issue 7 Musings from the Mission Society MORAVIAN MISSION AREAS IN PERU The month of August is an important month that we Moravians remember since As you may know, since 2008 the Worldwide Moravian Unity has been interested in planting Moravian Churches and sharing Christ in Peru. Peru has been designated a Mission Area under the Northern Province through our BWM. This was a significant event for us as Moravians. In the same way, on August 12, 2011 Bishop Samuel Gray, Pastor Segundo Regalado, and I traveled from the US to Peru. On August 17th of the same year Moravians started a Mission Area in my native country Peru, in the city of Chiclayo (Northern Peru) and in the capital of Lima. Since that date until now we have kept growing and have two missión worksites: (L)Hilda & (R)Segundo Regalado, Sam Gray In Chiclayo: 1. Cruz de la Ezperanza and the Wilmer Fernandez Malca Annex led by the acolyte Walter Calle and his wife Monica; 2. Rhemanente and Ciudad de Dios led by Rev. Christopher Valencia, his wife Charito, and their son the Acolyte Brandon.. Charito & Rev.Christopher Valencia Monica & Walter Calle Manuel, Gabriella, Ana Maria Huaman In Lima, two other Mission worksites: 1. in Mosha, Mangomarca, led by Acolyte Ana Maria Huaman; 2. Somos Uno, led by Rev. Manuel Verastegui and his wife Carmen Correa. There is also an outreach ministry in Puente Piedra. Rev. Manuel & Carmen Correa Articles p.2 Peru p.3 Ted Wilde p.4 USVI p.5 USVI We had our first Moravian Conference in July, 2015 with more than two hundred members, and we expect to have twice as many for the second one in p.6 Irene, Unity Bd, Prison Ministy p.7 Pray p.8 Salmon Bake Continued page 2

2 MORAVIAN MISSION AREAS IN PERU The four main areas are also working with projects, approved by the BWM, to help provide self-sustainability for the developing churches in Peru. These are the Bubbles Laundromat, the English Academy, chocolate-making cottage industries, selling dairy products, and the Mariachi Band. During these years there were many USA Teams that visited Peru Friedberg (NC), Come and Worship (NC), Wisconsin, Canada, First Greensboro (NC), and other volunteers; led by Bishop Samuel Gray, Judy Ganz, Betsy Miller, Justin Rabbach, Hilda Regalado, Angélica Regalado, etc. They could see how Moravians are working, growing, and being touched by the Lord, receiving new experiences through the Holy Spirit and giving blessings, too. Basically, the work is with children and youth, through Bible classes and games, evangelism (knocking on doors or visitations at homes for healings and prayers), and other activities. Bishop Bhodan Chancivk & daughter Jirina (CZ Republic) Rev. Angelica Regalado In June of 2018, a team from the Northern and Southern Provinces, led by Hilda Regalado, traveled to Peru to serve in the churches and participate in outreach ministries. Members were Sylvie Hauser (WI), Maryanne Lott (NC), and Karmelle Kittlitz (Canada). Young adults from Rhemanente Moravian In Chiclayo have fellowship time With Karmelle, Sylvie, and Maryanne Youth at the outreach ministry of Wilmer Fernandez Malca sing and dance together. Maryanne, Karmelle, Sylvie, and Hilda singing in Spanish and English. And recently, did you know. that Moravians in our Peru Mission Area are exploring their own mission area? BWM s Justin Rabbach and Sam Gray were invited to join Pastors Christopher Valencia and Manuel Verastegui on a trip into the Amazon Region. Getting there involved airplanes, taxis, trucks, 4x4 s, vans, buses, motorcycle taxis, a canoe, and walking shoes, but it was worth it. The team met with 25 pastors and community leaders, representatives of the Aguaruna Evangelical Association (and a dozen children!) in the beautiful Amazon village of Bajo Ca Nampa. With the help of an Aguaruna interpreter, they conducted workshops, took part in 4 worship services (Justin and Sam got to preach), baptized 15 people, and shared fellowship. An invitation was presented to begin mission outreach and partnership in a dozen villages in the region. Keep praying for this wonderful mission in Peru and God s guidance going forward. Thank you to the Northern and Southern Provinces and local churches and volunteers that have had an important mission work in Peru. God bless you all! By Hilda Regalado. Bishop Sam Gray, Hno. 3 FORMER BWM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PASSES AUGUST 4, 2018 Theodore Edward (Ted) Wilde was born in Vancouver, BC on August 16, 1938, to the Rev. Edward and Mrs. Margaret Weingarth Wilde. As a PK, he moved around with his family, attending elementary school in North Dakota and high school in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Ted went to Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) in 1956, graduating summa cum laude in 1960, with honors and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. During that time, he spent one year at the University of Munich, Germany. This was in keeping with his passion for and understanding of a wider world and a worldview enriched by exposure to other cultures, places, people and perspectives. Ted Wilde began his theological studies at Moravian Theological Seminary in 1960, and then spent a year as student minister at the United Church in Linden, Guyana (an ecumenical mission in which the Moravian Church is still involved). In 1962, he returned to Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where Margaret Dickey was also studying. They were married in June of 1964 and both received their Masters of Divinity degrees from Union in During Ted s time at Union, he served as supply pastor for Trinity Moravian Church in New Dorp Beach, Staten Island, NY. Ted went on to earn a Master of Arts in International Relations from Yale University in 1967, and he continued part-time studies at Georgetown University while serving as Director of Prince George s County Community Action Agency. Ted and Margaret had a son, Parke Edward, in 1967, and their daughter, Rachel Louise, came into their lives in (Parke and Rachel have been a special blessing to Ted and Margaret with the loving care that they have provided, especially during the last difficult months.) Ted was ordained a Deacon in the Moravian Church on November 26, 1973, in Barbados, Eastern West Indies. This seems to be in keeping with the first line of a hymn that he wrote (MBW, hymn #684) where he said, Christ, engage us in your mission; worldwide let our parish be. (Ted had been working in Bridgetown, Barbados, with CADEC (Christian Action for Development in the Caribbean) since 1972.) From 1974 until 1983, Ted Wilde worked with Robert R. Nathan Associates, in Washington, DC, as an economic consultant and research associate for development programs in what were then known as Third World Countries. He had special assignments to work with Alaska native peoples, other Native Americans, people in Guyana and Latin America, with shorter trips to Africa, Sri Lanka, and many developing countries. On November 14, 1973, the name of the Interprovincial Foreign Mission Board of the Moravian Church in America was officially changed to the Board of World Mission of the Moravian Church. This set the stage for a new direction in and understanding of the mission of the church. On August 8, 1983, Ted Wilde began serving as the Executive Director of this Board of World Mission. From the start, he worked to expand the Moravian Church s definition of world and of mission. He served until July, If God so loved the world, who does that include, or, more importantly, who could it possibly not include? he asked. Ted was a fan and a follower of the Biblical Great Commission but challenged the church to see other passages as also being missional. These would include verses from the prophet Micah concerning justice and mercy; verses from Matthew 25 concerning feeding the hungry and welcoming the stranger; verses from Matthew 10 concerning what to take and what not to take with us when we go out in mission. In true Moravian fashion, Ted Wilde expressed his mission theology best in the hymn that he wrote in 1984, after one year in the position of Executive Director of the BWM. Here is the text of that hymn: Christ, engage us in your mission; worldwide let our parish be. We take up this great commission, traveling first to Calvary There absorbing, Christ-like going, taught by your humility. Long before our proclamation you announced God s liberty, Seeding hope in every nation of unending jubilee. Thus the Kingdom spreads its branches, grows in all humanity. Open then our hearts and senses to your Spirit s varied ways. Overcome our self-defenses so we hear the prayer and praise Which the folk of countless cultures in new words and rhythms raise. Ted got to experience a taste of those words and rhythms being raised by countless cultures, not only during his time as Executive Director of the BWM, but also in his final pastorate at Prince of Peace Moravian Church (Miami, FL), from August, 1995, until his retirement in Ted s life reflected a passion for and a vision of a world where every voice would be heard and every life valued. The Board of World Mission is grateful for the ministry and mission of our brother, the Rev. Ted Wilde, and for his challenge to us and to the whole church to find our unity in the midst of our 3 glorious diversity, by traveling first to Calvary; by getting closer to Jesus Christ and then being surprised by who else is there with us! By Bishop Sam Gray 3

4 HURRICANE DEVASTATION IN ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. My sister tagged me in a Facebook post about an upcoming mission trip to St. Thomas. The project was to help rebuild a school on the island. I was unsure if my skills would match the need. (Furthermore, If I m being 100% honest, I was a little hesitant about going down for fear of teaming up with a group that I just didn t like.) I explained my skills to Jill Kolodziej with the Board of World Mission and she assured me they could use my help. I was able to get away from work for a week so I decided to go. I wasn t sure what to expect. Team Left to Right: Sarah Carter, Pastor Jeff Carter(Little Church), ThomWeaver, Rev. Dr. Winelle Kirton-Roberts (Memorial Church), John McCorkle, & Derrick McCorkle We arrived nearly 1 year after 2 category 5 hurricanes hit the islands. Let me tell you, the need in the Virgin Islands today (August 2018) is overwhelming. The initial tour of the school was heartbreaking. Most of the furniture and school supplies were ruined. Mold was growing on the ceilings and walls. Some of the ceilings had collapsed leaving debris all over the floors. My heart was heavy for the people of St. Thomas. This brief tour (just hours into our week) really gave a sense of the devastation. Memorial Moravian School Room A sense of guilt and emotion came over me because I find myself often complaining of simple things that, when put into perspective with this tragedy, simply don t matter. At St. Thomas, locals were without power for months. Some still have not been able to move back into their homes. It was eye opening. I have taken so much for granted. Emmaus Moravian Church, St. John Worship Service at Memorial Moravian, St. Thomas I can t explain in words how gracious the people of St. Thomas were for our help. They accepted our team as part of their family immediately. Church members pitched in and helped. They were excited to share the island and local food with us. We were invited to 2 birthday parties while we were there! It was like seeing family that you hadn t seen in years. They invited us to worship with them on Sunday. The service was uplifting and energetic. It was one of best, If not the best, worship services I have ever been to. We were treated to a tour of St. John and some relaxing time on the beach after Sunday worship. 4

5 The work: HURRICANE DEVASTATION IN ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. Our team continued demolition of the School at Memorial Moravian. The work was completely different than my day job in sales. We started early to beat the mid-day heat. Working down in the islands I recommend boots, long pants, and light long sleeve shirts. You ll also want a few good face masks, gloves and safety glasses. With the coastal breeze, it was cooler down there than in North Carolina (highs in the mid-80s). The smell of mold was strong at times, but we took several breaks and drank lots of water! Boots should be a requirement as I stepped on several nails during the week (my boots protected me from injury). Thom Weaver removing paneling at the Schooll You can make a difference: Delores, Memorial Moravian school School Teacher, cleaning her classroom Don t doubt yourself. If you are not afraid of a good day s work and are willing to show up with the proper gear, you can do this work! During the week we filled up 4 site dumpsters. It was very rewarding to see the results of our efforts. Everyone was very encouraging. I made several new friends that I plan on keeping up with for a long time. If you are thinking of serving on a mission trip, I m reminded of a meme that I see floating around Facebook: You weren t born to just pay bills and die. Serving on a mission trip is an experience that will broaden your heart and strengthen your spirit. It s always a good time to help others. Find your calling and go. By L. John Golding L.
