St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church Parish Newsletter Winter 2019 Fr. Shiju Thuruthiyil OSH Pastor Volume 2019 Issue Winter Dear Parishioners, January 2019 Fr. When I came to Klamath Falls from a different country, I had many favorable first impressions. First the people here, your friendly attitude, helping mind, your special care, concern and support. I was so impressed with this parish community, the ministry and the programs that we have at St. Pius X. As I started my ministry here, I was impressed with the church building and facilities. I love the physical beauty of this place and our campus. About a quarter century ago, dedicated parishioners took on the considerable work that resulted in a new St. Pius X. On April 11, 1999 we consecrated this church where for the last 20 years our community has celebrated the sacraments. This is where we live, experience and share. A parish is a million small memories and sensations. It is things you can t even describe. Reconciliation, forgiveness and renewal. It is all ye faithful. It s people. It is all of us, here right now; the body of Christ. This church was built without incurring any ongoing debt. All the people associated with this project should be most proud. We must be grateful to the people who generously contributed towards this project and to the pastors who took leadership of this project. Yet it has remained substantially the same since it was new in It is our home, it is our faith home. And just like your home where you live, after a time you see things you want to change and features you want to update. I strongly believe it is time to consider some changes into our physical sanctuary. Our sanctuary is very simple. I find myself imagining a sanctuary that inspires worshipers with physical beauty, that draws the eye and mind to the sacraments, that invites people in, where we encounter God through the beauty of our sacred space. I wish to inform you that recently I formed a small exploratory committee to help me with gathering ideas, to discuss some general ideas of sanctuary beautification and to begin considering the practical aspect of such an undertaking. Please be assured that no decision has been made to proceed - simply to gather ideas and facts. I ask you to prayerfully consider if the time has come to create a more beautiful, inspirational, attractive and well inspiring worship place here at St. Pius X and most especially I ask you to ask yourself how you perhaps could provide guidance and energy in support of this effort. I will provide updates from time to time on our progress and consideration. Most especially, I pledge to you, ample opportunities for involvement in the process should it proceed. Please free to contact me with your thoughts and ideas. Have a Happy New Year, overflowing with faith, joy and prosperity. In Christ s love, Fr. Shiju Thuruthiyil OSH Vision Statement To increase the disciples of Jesus Christ within our parish and community

Page 3 Mass Times Saturday Vigil 5:00 pm Sunday St Vincent de Paul is one of the wonderful ministries at St. Pius X. This year, as in previous years, we were able to provide food baskets, as well as angel gifts for people who need a little help especially at this time of year. This Christmas season, Food Baskets were given to 50 families. Our church families donated gifts for 100 children to help make this a special Christmas. Our gratitude and thanks goes out to the wonderful parishioners for their kind generosity. The Angel tree committee, chaired by Sherri Harper, did a tremendous job. Thank You Sherri for all your hard work. We would also like to thank Patti Baumann, Elenette Bach, Klara Jeanplong, Kathy Pence and Jan Bos for all their help. We would like extend a huge thank you to Patti Surprenant for all the time and work for handling the intake and paperwork. As a ministry St Vincent de Paul works hard throughout the year. If anyone would like to volunteer please contact Kay Von Tersch. 4 Page 4 Parish Newsletter St. Maurus Hanga Abbey Dear friends and donors of St. Maurus Hanga Abbey, May I wish you MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR. I am also taking this opportunity to say THANK YOU very much for your donations for the clean water project in southern Tanzania. The big news is the completion of the clean water project for the 15,000 people living in five villages. In September 2018, the last of four tanks were completed, concluding the four year project which began in Thank you for the gift of life to these people. As the need for safe drinking water is huge, we continue to make progress in our efforts to help other villages. Our next project is for a village of 3,000 people. It will be a gravity fed water system with four miles of water line. We continue to raise funds to buy sections of pipe and cement for the construction of reservoir tanks. At the abbey, a project is also in progress: the construction of Women s Ward of 45 beds at the Health Center. Construction has begun with walls already standing. More funding is needed for roofing, plumbing, plastering, and installing doors and windows. The need for the Women s Ward arose due to an increase in the number of patients at the center after the establishment of the Surgery Unit in Patients in need of extended treatment or women who need to arrive a few days before their delivery date, need a place to stay. We hope to finish this construction sometime next year. Again, we thank you very much for your support in serving those in need. If you donate make check payable to St. Maurus Mission Appeal. 5 Volume 2019 Issue Winter Page 5 Please call the Pregnancy Hope Center and sign up for our new series of classes starting January 2019! Session #1 FEMM and Your Health Participants are introduced to FEMM (Fertility Education & Medical Management) as a model for women s reproductive health. A woman s reproductive health is closely tied to the state of her general health and to the delicate interplay of certain hormones within her body. The sufficient production of these hormones can be tracked throughout each cycle as indicators of both health and fertility. FEMM enables women to become informed participants in their own gynecologic healthcare. Participants learn the parts and function of reproductive anatomy and the physiology of ovulation. Observable biomarkers allow women to identify hormonal changes. Participants are taught the method of FEMM charting through observing and recording these biomarkers. Session #2 Contraception Why Not? In this class we review male & female reproductive anatomy, the process of conception, and different types of birth control options including barrier methods, chemical and surgical sterilization, copper IUD, and Fertility Awareness Methods. The mechanisms of operation for each option plus effectiveness rates, side effects, and discontinuation rates are covered. Session #3 FEMM Expert Participants learn to understand the cycle both its biomarkers and the underlying hormonal activity as an indicator of their overall health. They are taught the phases of the cycle with an emphasis on the time of ovulation, the dominant hormonal activity in each phase, and what biomarker observations within each phase are necessary for a woman to be considered healthy. The session includes analysis of various cycle types, including those of health concern. Session #4 Healthy Relationships This class begins with the premise that everyone is searching for true love in a healthy relationship and proceeds to define what sex, love, and commitment look like in this context. We discuss reasons why sex belongs in marriage and the science behind the bonding hormones in both men s and women s bodies. Practical application for dating and body language are discussed. Session #5 FEMM Family Planning In this session, participants are taught the principles of FEMM Family Planning. The session includes a review of male and female reproductive physiology, the dominant reproductive hormones, and the key stages in and differences between male and female fertility throughout reproductive life. Even though each woman has a unique cycle, she will learn to identify her times of fertility and infertility for use in family planning. You are welcome, and even encouraged, to invite your significant other to any of these classes. For more information on FEMM please visit I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 6 Page 6 Parish Newsletter Pre-K 12 th grade Thanks to a gifted and dedicated group of catechists more than 100 registered children and youth are being formed into saints perfected in love. In fall 2018 we met the first Sunday of each month for an all-grades faith formation family opening; consisting of musical praise, catechesis on the liturgical year, the Mass, and vocations, followed by birthday recognitions. Subsequent week s catechists, children, and youth committed themselves to deeper formation in subject matter and prayer appropriate for each age group. In October we fulfilled our desire to keep children safe through Called to Protect training for Kindergarten 6 th grades, and will do the same for junior and senior high youth in January. We also served together at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery clean-up. Sacrament Preparation We have many children and youth continuing in preparation for First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. We have had excellent parent participation, for which we are very grateful. First Reconciliation will be celebrated in March, and First Communion and Confirmation in May. Currently, we have three adult catechumens, three adult confirmandi, and two adults discerning entrance into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Most gather Tuesday evening for group formation, and some meet one-on-one with a catechist to accommodate schedules. Each week we first meditate and contemplate Jesus through a chapter from the Gospel of John and prayer with the rosary, then view a lesson from SYMOBOLON, followed by more in depth conversation. Please continue to pray for our catechists and candidates. Adults Five days of the week we continue to provide many quality opportunities for adults to grow in faith, hope, and love through catechetical formation and prayer. We earnestly urge all adults to check our weekly calendar in the bulletin for an opportunity that fits you best. We have women s, men s, and mixed gatherings. In addition, we hope everyone will take advantage of upcoming Faith Forums on vocations, youth ministry, manhood, and womanhood. We sincerely thank Bishop Cary, Jennifer Snoozy, and Charles Catterall for their fall presentations. Youth Ministry Every Wednesday evening about junior and senior high youth and ministers have gathered for meal fellowship, praise and adoration, presentations and conversations, and games. We had our first YouthNet Christmas worship night with approximately 100 Christian youth from Klamath Falls at Foothills Christian Fellowship, and hope to have another for Easter. Recently, we launched promotion for Steubenville Northwest and will have our annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction Saturday, January 19 th. You will hear more about SNW from our youth in months to come. Church Fathers Class Have you wondered about the early generations of Christians and how they grew in the practice and knowledge of their Catholic faith? Consider joining us on a journey through the first few centuries of the Church and learn about some of the people who helped the faith grow and spread throughout the world. We will also learn more about some of our major beliefs in this class. So, if you would like to grow in your understanding of your faith, join us for this 10-week series on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 am. The class will be in the parish hall beginning on March 5. Make this part of your Lenten journey. Contact Vic Scaravilli at for more information.

Volume 2019 Issue Winter Page 7 Membership Drive Ladies, have you been considering joining the Catholic Daughters? This is the time of year when we pay our $25.00 dues, so it makes sense to join now. We would love to have you join us in our efforts towards "Unity and Charity"! We have some exciting ministry opportunities awaiting you. Questions??? Kathy Pence (pictured left) heads up this ministry for Catholic Daughters. The prayer quilts are given to the bereaved following funerals at St. Pius X. Inside the pocket is a rosary, a Mass intention for the deceased, and prayers. It is our prayer that as we make these quilts, not knowing who will receive one, that our Good God will speed the person s entry into heaven and that those who remain and are grieving will be comforted in their loss. Kathy Pence is always looking for parishioners to partner with her in this important ministry. Contact Kathy if you have these skills. Advent Celebration We were so blessed to be invited to the Sacred Heart Catholic Daughters Advent celebration held on Monday, December 10th, at the Sizzler Restaurant. Thirty-three ladies (13 from St. Pius) enjoyed good food, great conversation and a lively ornament exchange with our "sisters from another parish". Though we are separate courts, we have the same mission and are working towards "Unity and Charity" - the Catholic Daughters motto.

Page 8 Parish Newsletter HOLY FAMILY AWARD Each year St. Pius X takes joy in recognizing a family, couple, or individual for their service to the parish by presenting to them The Holy Family Award. This award represents the spirit of love, stewardship, and devotion to the Catholic faith and a willingness to give of their time, talent, and treasure to improve the function and life of our parish. At the Feast of the Holy Family Mass on December 30, 2018 Father Shiju presented the award to a family who is involved in Faith Formation, Children s Dismissal, Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Counting Crew, Altar Servers, Sound Crew and many other activities in the parish. The Holy Family Award was presented to the Dupuis Family; Francois, Dawn, Aricadia, Cassie, Matthew and Jeffery.

Volume 2019 Issue Winter Page 9 Advent by Candlelight, November 30th, 2018 Waiting for God s Answer 80 Women joined us for Advent by Candlelight. Advent by Candlelight is an opportuni ty for women to set aside the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations and focus their minds and hearts on the Second Coming of Christ and the true meaning of Christmas. The event helps women of faith to be more centered in Christ spiritually and maybe a little less stressed as we approach the seasons of Advent and Christmas. We may get overwhelmed as we think about parties, cookies, family, and presents or look at the season as a time of loneliness or dwell on happier memories of the past. We come to relax, sing songs of the season, and hear a beautiful message from our speaker. The hostess for every table, decorates the table with beautiful dishes and provides a dessert for her guests. Thank you to: Sharon Crabb, for sharing your personal journey Waiting for God s Answer The table hostesses Dora Murillo, Diane Sena, Sara Merck, Jennifer Snoozy, Vir ginia Kugler, Deb Scaravilli, Kathy Pence, Jenny Dreyer & Julie Kraan, Colleen Quirk, and Susan Holliday Deb Scaravilli for leading us in music. Thank you ladies for joining us this year. Sacred Heart will host Advent by Candlelight in 2019.

Page 10 Parish Newsletter An Invitation to All Ladies of St. Pius X Parish 2019 All members of St. Pius X Parish have an interest in the success of the Altar Society. One of our most vital ministries is funeral luncheons. Funeral luncheons are provided for all parish families that have lost a loved one. We are in desperate need of help for workers at the luncheons. If more women do not volunteer we will not be able to continue to provide this very vital and loving ministry. We invite each woman of the parish to become an active member of the Altar Society. We need your involvement and support for the needs of our Parish. The money we receive from dues/donations and fundraisers help provide the following items and services: Clergy vestments, Altar servers robes, and Acolytes albs Linens used on the altar during Mass Sacred Vessels used during Mass Liturgical church banners Food for funeral luncheons Receptions for Confirmation, Bishop s visits, and other miscellaneous parish events Operating the spiritual gift shop (providing the only Catholic religious articles in Klamath Falls). We meet the second Monday of the month at 6:00 pm. Meetings usually last about one hour. We do not meet in June, July and August. Our dues/donations (optional) are $8.00 a year. Our largest fundraiser is our annual parish Holiday Bazaar in November. We thank you for your generosity and support. Any questions, please feel free to call me. 11 Volume 2019 Issue Winter Page 11 The Benedic ne Monks of Hanga Abbey- Tanzania Adult Foster Care in Klamath Falls First and foremost, Brother Nolasco Mwalongo would like to thank St. Pius X parish, for giving him and St. Maurus Hanga Abbey the opportunity to write about their Foster Care mission work here in town. Special thanks should be directed to Ben and Karen Quen for being some of the early pioneers and proponents of this undertaking. With the help of these two parishioners, Father Ildefonce Mapara and Brother Nolasco were able to start operating their first adult foster home in This home is located at 2450 Radcliffe Avenue, not far away from Fred Meyer store. Currently, has two male adults with special needs, whose needs are being met by Brother Nolasco who lives with them. Brother Peter Mwakakonyole and Sister Gloriosa Komba are his relief staff. Moreover, at the end of 2016, Brother Peter was able to start a second foster home at Mallory Drive. He successfully managed the home for about 7 months before suspending it temporarily in August 2017, to go back to Tanzania to renew his work visa. Brother Peter is now back in Klamath Falls and has finished the process of reopening the foster home, under the guidance of Klamath County Developmental Disability Services. Apart from assisting residents accomplish their daily life activities, the monks and the nun take these folks shopping, to their doctors appointments, fishing, hiking, bike riding, sightseeing, etc. Doing all these with the most caring and loving manner a Christian can possibly give to another human being. There are moments when a resident exhibits challenging behaviors, that could easily make them give up on good work. However, Brother Nolasco and his relief staff have patiently continued to nurture and make the residents feel valued and respected like everybody else. The brothers and Sister Gloriosa have learned through experience what a big difference unconditional love makes into the lives of these folks. Besides, St. Benedict reminds them daily the importance of exercising Christian love as stated on chapter 4, verse 26, in his Holy Rule, Never turn away when someone needs your love. 12 Page 12 Parish Newsletter The Women of St. Pius X and Sacred Heart meet once a week in the conference room at St. Pius X (Thursdays after Mass) for Scripture studies and faith sharing. This season we are learning about The Women of the New Testament. In this study we look to them to learn how to be transformed in Christ and then to spread his message of love. This is a special opportunity for us to grow in our faith and support each other in prayer. All are welcome. Please feel personally invited to join us. Contact Mary Lou Kranenburg, (541) for more information. The Circle of Sisters Book Club The Circle of Sisters Book Club is a group of women who enjoy reading. We meet every 8 weeks and discuss a book that we chose together the meeting before. Pictured here are the gals, at Jodi White's home, who got together to discuss Pearl in the Sand, by Tessa Afshar, a historical fiction book about Rahab and her journey of faith. What a lively discussion we had about this compelling Biblical heroine who is cited in the lineage of Jesus. Our next book pick is Rita's Story, a nonfiction book written by Rita Klaus documenting her life and her miraculous healing from MS. We will meet on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the St. Pius X Conference Room, right outside the Parish Hall. Terri Lloyd will be our hostess. If you enjoy reading and want to include spiritually uplifting books in your reading list, please consider participating in the Circle of Sisters Book Club. Contact Deb Scaravilli; (vicdebscaravilli@gmail.com; ) for information.

Volume 2019 Issue Winter Page 13 Singing is a key element of Christian liturgy: Singing is one of the primary ways that the assembly of the faithful participates actively in the Liturgy. The people are encouraged to take part by means of acclamations, responses, psalms, antiphons, [and] hymns... (Sing to the Lord, 26, quoting Sacrosanctum Concilium, 30). It also explains why the musical formation of the assembly must be a continuing concern in order to foster full, conscious, and active participation (STL, 26). Our song, then, is not only for the liturgy but for nourishment for the week ahead and for the journey through life. The music ministry at St. Pius X is always looking for musicians to lead the liturgy. Our Sunday group is large (Sunday choir pictured on right) but we could use additional singers at the Saturday Vigil Mass and we are always looking to include instrumentalists, including additional piano players. This Advent, I'm sure you have enjoyed hearing Sally Clark play her cello on Saturday evening and Jennifer Snoozy added so much to the Sunday music with her oboe. It would be wonderful to have that richness throughout the year! Even if instrumentalists play one or two songs only, it gives musicians an opportunity to give of their talents to their church community and practice their instrument and, parents, this is a great opportunity to increase the value of those music lessons. We practice an hour before each Mass and, those who can, come on Thursday evening at 5:30 pm to the Parish Hall to get a leg up on the music for the weekend. If you have an ear for music, can sing parts or play an instrument, come and join us. Contact Deb Scaravilli for information ( ; vicdebscaravilli@gmail.com).

Page 14 Parish Newsletter This section of the newsletter contains questions frequently asked by both Catholics and non-catholics about our faith. Knowing the answers help you to grow in your faith. Why don t we sing the Our Father during Mass? In the Lord s Prayer a petition is made for daily bread, which for Christians means principally the Eucharistic Bread, and entreating also purification from sin, so that what is holy may in truth be given to the holy. The Priest pronounces the invitation to the prayer, and all the faithful say the prayer with him (USCCB) Since it is a very important prayer, people (visitors) are more confident in reciting it rather than singing it. It is the prayer which should have participation by the greatest number of those present. Are all Catholic Beliefs found in the Bible? BY MONSIGNOR J. BRIAN BRANSFIELD (USCCB) People ask if everything Catholics believe is found in the Bible. The answer? Both yes and no. The Church does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the Holy Scriptures alone (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC] no. 82 Dei Verbum 9). Jesus is the ultimate Source of everything Catholics believe, for he reveals God s plan to save the world from sin as he reveals the Father s love. Jesus does this because he is the Son of God. He is always united with his Father and thus is the fullness of both Revelation. The mission of Jesus continues through the ministry of the Church that he founded, and he has given the Church the inspiration of the Holy Spirit for guidance in everything. The Revelation of Jesus is thus extended to the Apostles and handed on through two means: Sacred Scripture and Tradition.. Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest? by Rev. Ian M. Bozant Archdiocese of New Orleans (USCCB) In a modern American mindset, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on privacy. As such, the idea of confessing one s sins to another person can seem odd or even unnecessary. Often, the most common argument against this idea is that Almighty God knows all things and desires all people to approach him in prayer, so it seems sufficient to simply confess one s sins and beg for forgiveness in private prayer. While venial sin may, in fact, be forgiven in many ways, the Catholic Church teaches that it is necessary to confess one s mortal sins to a priest in the Sacrament of Penance in order to receive forgiveness from God. This teaching is based on our fundamental reality as human beings, on Sacred Scripture, and on a knowledge of sin s personal and communal effects. Many will point to the following passage from Scripture as a rebuttal of the Catholic Church s position: For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and the human race, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as ransom for all (1 Tm 2:5-6). Why, then, should one approach an additional mediator a priest in order to receive forgiveness? The answer here is that the priest is not an additional mediator; rather, he is the agent of the one mediator as he stands in the person of Christ in confession. It is our Blessed Lord who forgives sins in and through the person of the priest. Even so, Christ as the sole mediator and as the Son of God has the divine prerogative to choose how he wishes to mediate his plan of salvation and forgiveness to the world. Christ, as the sole mediator, chooses to use others in the accomplishment of his work in the person of the priest..

Volume 2019 Issue Winter Page 15 The following parishioners and loved ones of St. Pius X have passed away in the 4th quarter of Let us continue to pray for their souls. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8 Mildred Glodowski, James Duran, David Gardner, Robert Nau, Pete Wodzewoda, Irene Rodrigues, Gerald Sayles, Opal Barrett, Marjorie Vassallo A brief history of Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery has been a fixture in Klamath Falls for approximately 102 years. In this edition of the Parish Newsletter and ones to follow, you ll get a history lesson about Mt. Calvary. The original location of Mount Calvary Cemetery was on Biehn Street where it intersects with Lakeport Blvd. The parcel of land is currently occupied by the Klamath Eye Center. Its actual established date is unknown however the earliest known burial was in The diagrams below show the Cemetery survey and plot plan. The Mount Calvary Cemetery Association was incorporated in the State of Oregon, on January 25, Reverend Felix Leo Geis, the Pastor of Sacred Heart Church was the first president of the association. Reverend Geis passed away on February 13, 1959 and is buried at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in the E section which is reserved for Clergy. On the left is an undated photo of Reverend Geis. The initial trustees of the association were, Rev. F.L. Gies, Andrew James Santamaw, J.F. Maguire, Dan Colwell, Leon F. Crawford, Edward James Murray and David R. Vandenberg. On August 31, 1932 the Association purchased a tract of land in the Pine Grove area, known as the Mary Shepard Estate for $1, This land became the current location of Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. A contributing factor to the need of a new location was the development of Highway 97. To be continued
