2 Welcome to Leeds Minster About Us Leeds Minster has been a site of Christian worship since the 7th century, when Leeds was no more than a small village. The Leeds Cross, inside the present building, is a rare survivor from Anglo- Saxon times. Walter Farquhar Hook became Vicar of Leeds in 1837 and immediately started rebuilding the Parish Church. He wanted a building to hold as many people as possible and to express the grace and compassion of God as it served the city. The present building dates from 1841 and replaced the medieval church which had become unsafe. At the time it was the largest Anglican church built in England since St Pauls Cathedral. Today it continues to seek to serve the city. Many important events in the life of Leeds and beyond are marked by services in this historic Church.

3 Educational Visits We want to encourage children and young people to explore and engage, to ask questions, evaluate and reflect on the things they learn during their visit. We offer a range of activities to inspire and enrich teaching across the curriculum. Our workshops are designed to fit with local SACRE guidelines as well as the Diocesan RE scheme of work and Understanding Christianity. Visits to Leeds Minster provide first class enrichment for our pupils through handson, practical learning within a high quality and stimulating environment. I would recommend the Minster workshops and visits to all schools as educationally and spiritually rewarding. 4 It s your Minster Explore and investigate the Minster and find out what happens in a holy building. Learn about the font, pulpit, lectern and altar and when they are used. Suitable for KS 1-2 Saints and Heroes Find out about some of the heroes of the Christian faith. There are lots to choose from Jesus, St Peter, St Paul, St Mary, St Katherine, Dr Hook, Woodbine Willie, and Capt Lawrence Oates. Suitable for KS 1-2 Leeds Minster through the Ages Discover what the Minster can tell us about the history of Leeds and find out how the building has changed to meet the needs of the City. Suitable for KS 2 Materials and Elements Focus on the science and technology throughout the building. Which materials have been used and why? Suitable for KS1 Art and Symbols Leeds Minster is packed full of art and symbols. Find out about the mosaic panels by Salviati, the stained-glass windows, the Angel Screen by Sally Scott and the wall hanging by Juliet Hemingray. Suitable for KS 2-4

5 World War 1 What can we learn from the many and varied memorials throughout the building? How and why do we remember those who have died in war? Why Is it important to remember? Hear about Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, commonly known as Woodbine Willie, and what he did. Suitable for KS 2-3 Spirituality Days Discovering the `space within. An opportunity to explore, connect with and reflect upon your spirituality. Suitable for KS 2 3 Sixth form Conferences Opportunities to discuss topical moral and philosophical issues with a range of leading academics, civic leaders and thinkers. 6 Seasonal workshops Christmas On a guided journey around the Minster, hear the stories of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and wise men, see the beautiful nativity figures. Think about how and why Christmas is celebrated by Christians. Suitable for KS 1-2 Easter What s the story? From Palm Sunday to Good Friday and Easter Day, hear about what happened on the first Easter. Explore and reflect on the significance of Easter for Christians today. Suitable for KS 2

7 Practical Information for Schools All visits should be booked in advance. Teachers are encouraged to make a planning visit beforehand. Please remember that the Minster is a living and working church, therefore it sometimes has to close for special services. We welcome all children and young people. Please advise us of any special requirements at the time of booking. We have toilet facilities. Space for eating packed lunches can be made available. Please ask if you wish to use this facility at the time of booking. A suggested donation of 2 per pupil is requested as a contribution towards costs. It is possible to visit the Minster on the same day as a visit to another place of interest in the city.

There is a coach drop off point directly outside the Minster.
