Sacred Heart HIGH SCHOOL HAMMERSMITH SIXTH FORM

WELCOME TO THE SIXTH FORM AT SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL We know that the choice of a Sixth Form is really important to you. You want a Sixth Form that will offer you an outstanding range of opportunities, a broad curriculum, excellent teaching and tutoring that will prepare you for University and the next phase of your life. You will also want a different and broader experience of education- one that provides you with new and varied opportunities and experiences that will catch your imagination, build on your creativity, and enable you to grow and flourish as a unique individual. You have already achieved a great deal and you will wish to build on what you have achieved to date by becoming a member of a Sixth Form that will seek to engage you in a wide range of learning activities within and beyond the school so that when you leave you will have a well -developed sense of your giftedness ready to face the future. At Sacred Heart our Sixth Form is beginning to develop into a vibrant community where you are able to grow and develop as a young woman of faith and dignity. Built on the rich traditions, ethos and culture of the Society of the Sacred Heart our school is a community of faith and learning where you know you will be challenged to be the best you can be, and better. It is a community where you will be supported and valued for who you are and recognised for who you can become. We take great pride in the connections we have established with universities including Oxford and Cambridge and the strong links we are building with the wider community to support experience of the world of work through internships and give added breadth for UCAS applications As a member of the Sixth Form, you will have even greater access to the links available through the network of Sacred Heart schools and colleges across the world. This means that you will be able to take advantage of working with young people in Sacred Heart institutions in other countries and continents. An exchange programme is already established with our Sacred Heart School in Boston, and a group of students are travelling to the Sacred Heart community in Mexico in February We are determined that you should have a rich and diverse enrichment programme, including, Duke of Edinburgh Silver and Gold awards, sport, music and drama, alongside debating, Model United Nations, and other pursuits. Through our Sixth Form Ministry programme there will be opportunities to be involved, be inspired, to serve and to lead, including a pilgrimage to Lourdes with the HCPT In joining our Sixth Form you can be confident that you will be able to achieve your full potential and will be fully supported in doing so. Our tutorial system ensures you receive individual attention and support to reach your academic targets and personal goals. We are a school that never settles for second best and you can be assured of the success you deserve both personally and academically. We look forward to meeting you at our open evening. Mrs Marian Doyle HEAD TEACHER 1

A PERSONAL AND ACTIVE FAITH IN GOD A SACRED HEART SIXTH FORMER: participates in experiences of liturgy, prayer, and reflection, and explores her relationship with God, self, others; demonstrates a respect and reverence for life in all of its manifestations; while rooted in her own religious tradition, demonstrates a respect for the religious faith and cultures of others. 2

We are called to a fuller, richer, higher life within... called to work with God, to walk with God, to have influence with God... JANET ERSKINE STUART 3

A DEEP RESPECT FOR INTELLECTUAL VALUES A SACRED HEART SIXTH FORMER IS CHALLENGED TO BE A YOUNG WOMAN: who can acknowledge her gifts and is thankful for them; who is a critical thinker, who effectively uses appropriate resources and reasoning strategies to accurately solve complex issues; who understands herself as a life-long learner; who sets goals, monitors, and evaluates her progress; and who completes tasks; who demonstrates an understanding of aesthetic values and uses her imagination creatively; who can transfer learning to a variety of situations and who is flexible in her thoughts and actions; who is able to live compatibly in a global and technological world; who is willing to use her gifts of mind for self and others. 4

We must strengthen our studies by intellectual work. There is no question of flight from this task ST. MADELEINE SOPHIE 5

A SOCIAL AWARENESS WHICH IMPELS TO ACTION A SACRED HEART SIXTH FORMER IS CHALLENGED TO BE A YOUNG WOMAN: who has developed a critical conscience, which impels her to reflect on society and its values; who works effectively with others toward the achievement of group goals; who demonstrates the ability to listen to and respect the views of others; who is a woman of principles and can act on them; who has discussed the moral implications of issues, and brings her gifts of mind and heart to this study; who is committed to service as a way of life. 6

Try to render all possible service to others, not talking of the thing, but doing it. If you are known to be a person who loves to serve, many opportunities will come your way JANET ERSKINE STUART 7

THE BUILDING OF COMMUNITY AS A CHRISTIAN VALUE A SACRED HEART SIXTH FORM STUDENT acts out of her understanding of and commitment to Christian values and moral principles; has studied and appreciates the difficulties in issues challenging our interdependent world and can take an informed position. 8

We wish to build communion together, in trust, in friendship, forgiveness, sharing we wish to be open ourselves to be challenged by others SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART 9

PERSONAL GROWTH IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF WISE FREEDOM A SACRED HEART SIXTH FORM STUDENT IS CHALLENGED TO BE A YOUNG WOMAN: who knows how to create a vision for the future, who engages in life-long learning, analyses options and takes responsibility for setting and achieving personal goals; who uses opportunities to share her gifts and knowledge with others and accepts her limitations; who chooses the moral course of action and acts ethically in light of Gospel values; who demonstrates self-discipline and accepts responsibility for her actions; who can begin tasks promptly and can persevere when encountering obstacles; who uses leadership skills appropriate to her gifts and makes the most of opportunities for leadership; who has shown a commitment to life-long health and well-being; who can approach the process of change critically; who shows an understanding of the meaning of commitment. 10

We cannot change our character, it is true, as easily as we change our clothes. It is the work of a life time. It is achieved with the grace of God and constant effort ST MADELEINE SOPHIE BARAT 11
