3 St Davids Cathedral was declared a place of pilgrimage in the 12 th century. The vision for Tŷ r Pererin is that it will be part of the Cathedral s mission to turn visitors into pilgrims and make St Davids the most important place of pilgrimage in Wales. The purpose of Tŷ r Pererin is to offer extended hospitality to visitors to the cathedral, with particular emphasis on educational and spiritual activities around the Shrine of St David and pilgrimage. The centre offers a varied programme of educational outreach to children and young people. This allows for groups to engage with the various facets of the cathedral s life in conjunction with other areas of the National Curriculum. 4 Trefnu ymweliad We want you to have a great time here, it is important that you plan your visit carefully and we hope that this brochure will help you to do so. Please aim to book at least half a term in advance, we do get very busy, especially during our themed seasons (please see website for further information about seasonal programmes). At all times the responsibility for the pastoral care and supervision for your pupils is with your staff. We will do everything we can to help you. Tŷ r Pererin & Cathedral at Lunchtime you are welcome to eat PACKED LUNCHES in Tŷ r Pererin if you have booked for lunchtime although you must be aware that it you cannot leave any waste at the Tŷ r Pererin or Cathedral. THERE ARE TOILETS AVAILABLE IN THE CATHEDRAL AND IN TŶ R PERERIN We hope this information enables you to make a safe and enjoyable visit to Tŷ r Pererin and the Cathedral and that your pupils will be able to participate fully in a quality learning experience. If you require any more help or assistance please do not hesitate in contacting us for further discussion. EACH VISIT CAN EITHER BE BOOKED FOR A FULL DAY OR HALF DAY THE BOOKING PROCESS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY Call or to make a preliminary booking A booking form will be sent to you by along with all the information you need to know. Please read this and return the booking form ASAP Please return your completed risk assessment Once booking has been confirmed you will receive a confirmation letter by and a timetable with any further information for your visit including where the Education team will meet you We will invoice you after your visit and ask you to fill in an evaluation form this can also be done online. Any cancellation must be made 48 hours in advance We reserve the right to cancel or postpone a visit in the case of extreme weather or illness

5 Watching and Waiting Advent to Christmas Each day during December up until the holidays. 6 Harvest Festival First Friday in October, all schools are invited to celebrate Harvest together in the Cathedral RE To enable the children to understand the meaning of Harvest for Christians and for the world we live in. A time to celebrate and share together. Summer Celebration Different workshops available all around the cathedral on the theme of food, fair trade and Bible stories Music, drama, craft + free time to see the Cathedral A time to share worship, prayers, poems and songs together in the Cathedral In June all schools are invited to share a celebration day together in the Cathedral. 7 St David s Day workshops RE To provide the children with a special opportunity to discover St David s Day in a new and exciting way in the place where he lived and where he is still remembered in the Cathedral today. Only available during this time. Available for a week either side of St David s Day to provide two full weeks of workshops for schools dedicated to learning about the Cathedral, the life of St David and to take part in workshops and activities on those themes Explore the Cathedral to discover more about it and its history A series of interactive stations telling the story of the life of St David Activities and workshops in Tŷ r Pererin Opportunities for dressing up, drama, art, music and literacy as part of your experience

8 Megastructures and Maths The wonderful structures and designs of the cathedral provide a unique way to engage with the curriculum for Mathematics. During this visit the children will Maths, Art and RE To provide the children with a unique opportunity to explore maths outside the classroom in an interactive way Investigate number and measuring in the nave including time and distance Explore shape and symmetry Have a go at looking at the arch structures within the cathedral and making their own! Design a floor tile to take home (in a full day visit) Cathedral Church and life of St David The children will Participate in activities in the cathedral and at Tŷ r Pererin. Be involved in drama and literacy workshops exploring pilgrimage Learn about the cathedral and the life of St David Literacy, RE To understand the importance of the cathedral building and the link with the life of St David. To explore the idea of pilgrimage and respond using literacy.

9 Nursery Rhyme Safari Foundation Phase children specifically With the aid of a travelling bear the children will Explore the Cathedral to find animals hiding in the carvings, windows and art At each stop we will hear about the animal s significance to the Cathedral through song, craft, story or game This short session can be extended by bringing along children s own Teddies and sharing in a lunchtime Teddy Bear s picnic The world around St Davids This visit is conducted outdoors as well as in the Cathedral and in Tŷ r Pererin. The children will Enjoy activities outside the cathedral looking in depth at the local flora and fauna and learning what that tells us about the natural environment. Collect and record information that they discover connected with the landscape using maps and plans Explore the properties of water and talk about the use of water in Christianity with reference to St David Science, Geography, RE To explore the natural world in and around St Davids cathedral, looking at natural and man-made objects and making observations and recordings. Links with mini beasts and eco-schools.

10 Pilgrimage who, what, why? The children will Journey around the cathedral, Tŷ r Pererin as well as some coastal areas (weather permitting) to learn about the history of pilgrimage to St Davids Learn about the building and the life of St David Think about pilgrimage as a universal concept and its relevance to their lives Activities include drama and making a pilgrim passport, literacy response and additional activities for year 6 e.g. time capsules Pilgrimage Packages for Year 6 looking at their transition to secondary school (available Summer Term) History, RE To understand different periods in history, to know about the monarchy and religious practices of the time. RE, PSHCE To understand the importance of the pilgrimage in various contexts and to consider their own response Kings and Queens History Alive! Using artefacts and areas of the cathedral it is possible to travel through history, the children will Look at key figures in parts of the cathedral Focus on Tudors and Victorians Learn about the medieval period and religious practices through history Dress up, act out, engage with history from the medieval times right up to the present day with reference to Kings and Queens of England

11 Symbol and practice Exploring objects and parts of the building the children will Find out about symbols of St David and the Cathedral Explore symbolic meaning of light, water, bread, wine etc. in Christian worship Find out about symbolic pattern, shapes and images Investigate wood/stone carvings, crosses, mosaics, floor tiles and discover their symbolism and meaning. Learn about and produce an icon (if full day visit) RE, Art To understand the use of symbolism, to be able to explain some meanings of objects and symbols and explore creatively. RE, Art To understand the use of art in Christian worship and practice and to explore its meaning for them. Christianity through art The children will Look at paintings, murals, objects, patterns, sculptures and mosaics Explore art which tells a story Look at icons and different ways of making art Investigate wood/stone carvings, crosses, mosaics, floor tiles and discover their symbolism and meaning. Learn about stained glass windows and produce their own (if full day

12 Do I need to book in advance? Yes please! It gets very busy and we advise to book at least half a term in advance. Do we pay on the day? No you will be invoiced by us after your visit Where are the toilets? There are toilets in the cathedral and in Tŷ r Pererin. Where can we eat packed lunches? There is grass outside the cathedral but we welcome you to eat your lunch in Tŷ r Pererin Is there a shop? Yes the cathedral shop stocks a full range of postcards, books and small gifts. Are there facilities for those with special needs? Tŷ r Pererin and the Cathedral are both wheelchair accessible and the Education and Pilgrimage department cater for all SEN. Please inform us of any special needs when booking.

13 Arrival If you are going to be delayed please phone us at Tŷ r Pererin (01437) You will be welcomed to Tŷ r Pererin and the Cathedral by a member of the education team outside the main entrance. This gives us opportunity to prepare the pupils to enter the building in a respectful manner and with some focus. Health and safety Opposite Tŷ r Pererin, Ysgol Bro Dewi entrance is the designated fire/evacuation assembly point. At the Cathedral, the fire assembly point is located at the bottom of the flight of 39 steps. In case of emergency please follow the direction of the team and stewards We ask your school staff to supervise accompanying to toilets. We also expect you to deal with any withdrawal of pupils from the group, perhaps to a quieter area of the building, if they are disrupting the rest of the group in a major way and hopefully re-join when they have calmed down. Please ensure you have at least the appropriate ratios of adults for the age group. There may be other people around as well as our education team. If anyone concerns you please tell a member of staff. If First Aid is needed, or in case of an emergency, see a member of the education team or in the cathedral seek the assistance of a verger. Photography Policy Tŷ r Davids Cathedral keeps a pictorial record of our main events. To ensure participant security and safety the following will apply: All photographs will be general photographs of the activities at our events. These will be for our publicity purposes, including Cathedral and Diocesan websites. All photographs will be group photographs and not individual children. All captions will be related to the event and not give details such as school name or children s names. The Cathedral Education Officers will have a record of and approve all photographs before any publication. If your school or an individual child cannot be photographed for safeguarding or other legal reasons you must let us know before your visit. The photographs will be taken by ourselves or some-one asked by us. Schools are welcome to take photographs of their own school and the cathedral and pilgrimage centre buildings. It is useful for schools to bring a camera; we will indicate appropriate times to take photographs. It is up to the school to decide if pupils are allowed to also bring them. You may wish to have a record of education beyond the classroom and to assist in work back in the school. A photography permit system will be in operation for all other visitors to the cathedral. Cathedral stewards will issue the permit and explain that no photos of the children are allowed.

14 Risk assessment guidelines These guidelines form the basis of St. Davids Cathedral s Risk Assessment for School visits. It is highly recommended that you make a preliminary visit prior to the booked visit in order to familiarise yourself with the site and to complete a risk assessment suitable for your school and pupil needs. Sequence No Risk Identification Control Measures Tŷ r Pererin, the Cathedral Building and Precincts 1 An injured child or young person requires prompt medical attention. 2 Trip Hazards: Small steps to some areas of the Cathedral Electrical cables Precincts & Tŷ r Pererin grounds Slippery, steep and uneven steps on walk to Tŷ r Pererin & garden 3 Risk of falling from areas of height: Cathedral Pulpit If First Aid is needed, or in case of an emergency, see a member of the education team or in the cathedral seek the assistance of a verger. A first aider is always to be present, at least one helper is to carry a mobile phone at all times, first aid kit to be easily accessible. First Aid Kit located in Tŷ r Pererin kitchen, office and entrance hall. Controls below in place to prevent injury. Flat floors & ramps to all areas in use. Children to be closely supervised at all times and allowed only into other areas under supervision. Any electrical cables to be covered in areas used by pedestrian traffic. Areas to be used are accessed by ramped walkways which are in good condition. Slabs are flat, unbroken and generally even. Children to be closely supervised at all times and asked to use handrails. Allowed only to use the steps in garden under supervision. Access to the pulpit should only be under supervision. The pulpit should be roped off at other times during the visit. Tŷ r Pererin floor level windows Window locks and restriction braces in place. Children to be supervised closely and told to use hand rails. Flights of steps on walk to Tŷ r Pererin 4 Risk of sunburn Children only to be outside for a limited period during the day. Those on pilgrimage need to wear a sunhat and protective sun screen.

15 5 Risk of Burns & Scalds: Heating sources Candles and incense Chemicals Kitchen equipment Pupils told not to touch or sit on radiators. Candles and incense used at services and for some of the education programmes to be under control of a responsible adult. Children to be supervised when such devices are lit, and when near the candle votive stands around the cathedral. All potentially dangerous chemicals, e.g. those used for cleaning are kept in secure areas away from the activity areas. No children allowed in the kitchen area. Adults to take care when carrying hot drinks from the kitchen area. Equipment and Activities 6 Risk of injury from: Doors Chairs & tables Scissors Glues Pens & pencils Adults/children to be encouraged to hold heavy doors open for each other for ease of access. Chairs and tables to be used have no inherent sharp edges. Chairs are either of wooden or strong welded construction and folding tables mechanisms are all in good condition. These are stored safely and securely. All scissors to be used by children are of a type having rounded blade ends and do not have sharp blades. All glues to be used are of a non-toxic variety. 7 Is there any activity to be undertaken during the day which represents a particular hazard? The journey between Tŷ r Pererin and the Cathedral All pens and pencils to be used are of a non-toxic variety, children will be supervised at all times when using any equipment. Children to be warned to take care on uneven and slippery pathways. Encourage all to hold onto handrails on steep and slippery footpaths and steps. Children to walk in single file when there is danger from vehicles using the roads. Adults to closely supervise the walking on roads. Where

16 Those making a pilgrimage around St. Davids possible, adults to wear reflective jackets for escorting children to and from the cathedral or Tŷ r Pererin. A detailed risk assessment guidance for this particular journey would be made in addition to information on this general risk assessment. Child Protection 8 Photography: Has permission been sought from parents / guardians with regard to the use of photographs taken during the day? 9 How will members of the public be controlled in taking photographs / video? 10 Will there be occasions when children are alone on a one-to-one basis with an adult? 11 Is there a risk of physical or verbal abuse from persons entering the Cathedral? 12 Is there any risk to the children from helpers? Schools to arrange this beforehand. A photography permit system is in operation in the cathedral. Cathedral Shop/stewards will issue the permit and explain that no photos of the children are allowed. Education Team and Cathedral Stewards to be vigilant for any unauthorized photography. No. There is potential when children need the toilet. A member of the team will help you access the corridors and a member of school staff will escort the child(ren) to the toilets. There may be other people around as well as our education team. If anyone concerns you please tell a member of the Education Team. The risk is small, however, Stewards, Education Team and the duty verger need to be vigilant and act quickly to prevent any problems, calling the police if necessary. In addition, children are to be told only to approach helpers who will be clearly identified. Any known individuals who it is felt would be better distanced from the children will be dealt with by the Education Team and vergers. All Education Staff have CRB clearance. Education volunteers work under strict safe-guarding procedures and are never left alone with children. Fire and Theft 13 There is a risk of theft of Personal valuables must not be left unattended.

17 valuables, materials and equipment. 14 Fire: Risk of fire is minimal (see also item 5). Valuables are brought into Tŷ r Pererin and the Cathedral at the owner s risk. All electrical equipment to be PAT tested prior to use and thereafter tested annually. Education Team aware of location and types of fire extinguishers and fire exits. The designated fire evacuation point is located opposite Tŷ r Pererin, at the rear entrance to Ysgol Bro Dewi. At the Cathedral, the fire assembly point is located at the bottom of the flight of 39 steps. In case of emergency please help your pupils to leave the buildings in an orderly way and stay with them, notifying Cathedral staff if there are any missing. A verger will also be on duty in the Cathedral at all times.
