3 It s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Wonder. It s a feeling you ve probably experienced before--a take-a-step back moment that inspires feelings of awe and admiration at something beautiful, something unexpected. Christmastime has the power to bring up this sense of wonder whether you ve celebrated it once or countless times before. The fact that God sent His only Son, Jesus, down to Earth so that we could be forgiven of our sins and have relationship with Him inspires wonder in me. I am in awe at how we are given the opportunity to have a relationship with a holy God. I am in awe that Jesus, God s own Son would come to Earth God incarnate to bring us hope, joy, peace and love. Have you experienced that sense of wonder? It s my hope that God would use Highpoint Church in your life, and your friends and family s life, as we enter this special season. As you explore this winter quarterly, take advantage of all the opportunities to connect to the story of Jesus birth in a whole new way. And don t forget to invite your neighbors, family and friends to the many events and services all designed to share the true meaning of Christmas so we can believe, belong and become more like Jesus together. Praying that the wonder and awe of the gift of Jesus would impact you this winter quarter. In His Strength, Pastor Ron Zappia 4 Senior Pastor 5 5

10 WHAT S YOUR PASSION GIFT? GIVING TO FURTHER THE GOSPEL HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE. Christmas is the Season of Giving! Jesus coming to earth in the humility of a baby, yet with the power of being God himself, was the greatest act of generosity the world has ever seen. Because of that, our heart is to give back generously to the building of God s kingdom. This year our Passion Gifts are all about spreading the gospel all around the world! Every dollar that is designated as a Passion Gift, above and beyond your regularly giving will go back outside the walls of our church, to reach people in our community, our country and our world through global missionaries, church planting, local outreach partners and the Highpoint Care Center. The goal? To raise $160,000 throughout the month of December to fund these local and global outreach and missions initiatives. 1. Care Center Resourcing the Care Center (housed at the Naperville Campus) so those in our church and community can be cared for physically, spiritually and financially. 2. Local Outreach Partnering with local outreach ministries like World Relief and CareNet, who provide hope and healing to refugees and single moms alike. 3. Global Missions 1. Head to passiongifts 2. Explore the gifts. 3. Select your cause. 4. Give. Expanding our global reach across many continents by supporting and sending the 40+ missionary units. Overall Goal : $160,000 Naperville Campus Goal: $70,000 Wheaton Campus Goal: $50,000 North Aurora Campus Goal: $25,000 Bolingbrook Campus Goal: $15,000 All gifts will go to support local outreach and missions, however gifts may be reallocated between one of these 3 areas depending on outreach and missions needs

11 Primarily a Muslim country, there are only about 0.7% evangelicals. Specifically where the Smiths work, out of 2 million people, less than 5,000 are Christians. Furthermore, there are less than 25 missionaries where Smiths live and work. Turnover for missionaries in this area is high, as the way of life is difficult--the average life expectancy was 47 years when the Smiths first started researching this particular African country--and the indigenous peoples are not ripe for the gospel. STORY OF LASTING CHANGE MEET THE SMITHS FAMILY [...] you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). Few missionaries. More rural location. Less developed. This was the start of John and Amy Smith s* wishlist back in Yes, these were the things they were actually hoping to experience while living in a country as missionaries. After narrowing down their location to the continent of Africa, they then began looking at every African country to see which ones met their passions, giftings, family values and this non-negotiable list. In 2004, they landed in the heart of a rural country in West Africa and have since welcomed three children: Michael (15), Claire (12) and Julia (9). Flanked with mountains, forests, rivers and savannah, the country the Smiths serve in is bordered by some well-known, yet war-torn African neighbors. Although the topographical landscape sounds like an adventurer s dream, its political landscape is highly corrupt. Just as pollution travels downstream, so has the corruption from the government infiltrated the average person s way of life. Cultural mentality errs on the side of keeping things a secret that can give an individual a leg up on someone else--whether that s finding out about a sale at the grocery store or learning a new technique that can be applied to a trade. Survival is king. When asked how the Smiths begin a spiritual conversation, Amy laughs, saying, Let s just say we drink a lot of tea. Sharing the gospel and gaining someone s trust takes time and lots of conversation. Relationships are pretty significant and longevity is important. Individuals will discuss religion, but they don t know a whole lot about their own religion. It s just a cultural thing that they do being Muslim, but they are less interested in becoming Christians. Because Islam is part of these peoples cultural identity, conversion from Islam to Christianity incurs a lot of hostility. Amy shares, There s a huge cultural negative if you convert. You cannot convert from being a Muslim to being a Christian without a ton of persecution. John adds, People might try to poison family members. If a man becomes a Christian, his relatives will come and take his wife and kids away from him. Or if someone is in a business, people will stop doing business with him. Or if someone lives in a shared dwelling, he ll get kicked out of his housing. With risks like that, it s no wonder Christianity is a minority religion. Yet, the Smiths have been serving in West Africa for 15 years, continuing to build relationships, discerningly sharing the gospel and trusting God to add more to His Kingdom for His glory

12 A major breakthrough opportunity for sharing the gospel and countering some of the fear associated with conversion happened recently with what the Smiths lovingly refer to as The Lighthouse. Over the course of two years, this multistory building project employed 120 locals ranging in specialties from architects, to masons and diggers. At an opportune time in the government, the land was purchased by Christians and the building designed for Christians. The goal? To create a tool for building Christ s Kingdom. Each of the five stories is designed with a purpose and includes the following levels: a space for conference, housing, schooling, church and medical lab. During the actual construction phase, this project also provided Christians, like the Smiths, with opportunities to engage with locals on a daily basis. It also gave the Smiths the opportunity to show how Christians actually live. Amy shares with a smile on her face that there s a huge misconception that Christians in America dress and act like stars from Baywatch. They think Christians have no morals and are horrible people. We ve found that it isn t what we say, it s how we live that ripens people to the gospel. While building The Lighthouse, John also trained tradesmen in new skills, helping them grow in their profession. He explains, The idea of sharing something because I want to invest in you and help you become a better person is totally counter-cultural. Through this recent project, the Smiths have seen multiple people come into relationship with Jesus. Yet it hasn t come without a cost. In one such instance, a professional digger who converted to Christianity had his family taken away from him. Others have had to flee to a different city and start over. But one truth remains: the gospel is going forward, even if on rocky soil. By living a life glorifying to God and truly having to seek after Him on a daily basis, the Smiths are being refined by God and used as salt and light in a dark part of the world where the gospel [light of Christ] is desperately needed (Matthew 15:13-14). Request monthly newsletters to stay up-to-date on the Smith s journey by ing info@highpoint.church Highpoint Church supports 40+ mission units, including the Smiths. Through your generous support of families like the Smiths, the gospel is advancing here, there and everywhere. Partner with us in reaching our Passion Gifts goal for global missions by raising $160,000 to support the 40+ mission units throughout the month of December.
