4 Jesus' First Major Sermon The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ (Matthew 5:1-12) Christian Jargon: The Beatitudes (Beati is the first word of each verse in the Latin) The first Blessing (Matt. 5:3) Μακάριοι οί πτωχοί τῳ πνεύματι ὃτι αύτων έστιν ἡ βασιλεία των ούρανων. Blesséd the poor in spirit for of them is the kingdom of heavens. (are) [but] whomsoever (theirs) Most English Bibles do NOT translate τῳ τῳ (toe) may be dative form of τίς indefinite pronoun some or any (man, thing (at all), one), whom [-soever], but ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Jesus taught a parable that may help explain this blessing Luke 16:19-31 The beggar, Lazarus, and the rich man Same Greek word, πτωχοί, meaning poor, beggar, pauper, [i.e. economically impoverished] ~

5 The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ The Second Blessing Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Examining the Greek The first half of the verse is straightforward. Παρακαλέω (par-ak-al-eh'-o) to call near, i.e. invite, invoke, call for, (be of good) comfort, desire, give exhort (-ation), entreat, pray. So in a sense one who is mourning is being called out of their state of sorrow by God Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Heb. 4:16) The Holy Spirit and the Holy Bible together comfort us 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Comfort when someone passes And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4

6 The Third Blessing The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Examining the Greek Πραὖς (prah-ooce') mild, i.e. (by implication) humble :- meek Too often we associate meek with being fearfully submissive or weakness, i.e. won't stand up for oneself Meekness is an attribute of human nature and behavior. It has been defined several ways: righteous, humble, teachable, and patient under suffering, long suffering willing to follow gospel teachings; an attribute of a true disciple. (Wikipedia) Given all the problems on earth now, would the meek want it? Revelation 20:11, 21:1, or 21:1-22:5 2 Peter 3:13

7 The Fourth Blessing The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Examining the Greek πεινάω (pi-nah'-o) to famish, figuratively to crave :- be hungered δίψος (dip-sos') - thirst Jesus gave us the example to follow: And when He [Jesus] had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread. But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:2-4 (Deut. 8:3)

8 The Fifth Blessing The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful [1], for they shall obtain mercy [2]. Examining the Greek 1. ἐλεήμων (el-eh-ay'-mone) compassionate (actively) :- merciful (from [2]) take action out of compassion 2. ἐλεέω (el-eh-eh'-o) to be compassionate (by word or deed, specifically by divine grace):- have compassion (pity on), have (obtain, receive, shew) mercy (on). (from [3]) 3. ἕλεος (el'-eh-os) compassion (human or divine, especially active) :- (+tender) mercy From whom do we obtain mercy? Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy [3] and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

9 The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ The Sixth Blessing Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Examining the Greek καθαρός (kath-ar-os') clean (literally or figuratively), clear, pure A pure heart is a heart that has been made clean. By the blood of Jesus we are made pure 1 John 1:7-9 2 Corinthians 7:1 2 Timothy 2: Corinthians 6:9-11

10 The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ The Seventh Blessing Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Examining the Greek είρηνοποιός (i-ray-nop-oy-os') pacificatory, i.e. (subjective) peaceable:- peacemaker. εἰρήνη (i-ray'-nay) peace (literally or figuratively); by implication prosperity:- one, quietness, rest, ποιέω (poy-eh'-o) to make, to do, bring (forth), cause, commit, continue, deal, execute, exercise, fulfil, gain, give, have, hold, keep, observe, ordain, perform, provide purpose, put, spend With whom are the peacemakers making peace?

11 The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ The Eighth Blessing Matthew 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Examining the Greek διώκω (dee-o'-ko) to pursue (literally or figuratively) by implication to persecute:- ensue, follow (after), given to, (suffer) persecution, press toward Luke records an account about Paul being pursued by persecution Read Acts 17:5-14 Jews, out of jealousy, drove Paul out of Thessalonica These same Jews traveled 45 mi to Berea to cause trouble for Paul in Berea

12 The Ninth Blessing The Nine Blessings of Jesus Christ Matthew 5:11-12 Blessed are you when they revile [1] and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you, lying, on account of [2] Me. Rejoice [3] and be exceedingly glad [4], for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Examining the Greek 1. ὀνειδίζω (on-i-did'-zo) to defame, i.e. rail at, chide, taunt;- cast in teeth, (suffer) reproach, revile, upbraid 2. ἓνεκεν (hen'-ek-en) on account of :- because, for (cause, sake), (where) fore, by reason of, that 3. χαίρω (khah'-ee-ro) to be cheerful, i.e. calmly happy or well-off; be glad, joy(-fully), rejoice. 4. ἀγαλλιάω (ag-al-lee-ah'-o) to jump for joy, i.e. exult:- be (exceeding) glad, with exceeding joy, rejoice (greatly)

13 Giving Thanks for the Blessings of Jesus SO WHAT! The first 8 blessings all follow a pattern of Blessed are [those with a particular trait or ability] Followed by the blessing. The 9 th blessing is different Blessed are you Followed by an exhortation And encouragement of something better in Heaven
