The Eight Beatitudes Matthew 5:1-10. Something Catholic Extended 2/12/2015 By Michael Delaney
This is a Painting of a Happy Man More on this later
The Sermon on the Mount, the traditional name for the discourse of Jesus in MT 5-7 We could make a whole Something Catholic Extended of The Sermon on the Mount because it teaches concerning Anger, Adultery, Divorce, Oaths, Retaliation, Love of Enemies, Almsgiving, Prayer, the Lord s Prayer, Fasting, Serving Two Masters, Not to Worry, Judging Others, Profaning the Holy, Ask, Seek and Knock and the Narrow Gate.
The Sermon on the Mount is a compendium of the moral code of Christianity. The Sermon of the Mount expresses the heart of the New Law. Jesus explains how the New Law fulfills and deepens the directives of the Old Law (Ten Commandments) The New Law or the Law of the Gospels is the perfection here on earth of the divine law. (CCC 1965)
And the Sermon begins with the Beatitudes. Jesus, the new Moses, ascends the mountain, the new Sinai. The first word Jesus utters happy (or blessed ), makarios Greek, beatitudo Latin. Happiness, not the contemporary flawed usage, but true happiness, spiritual and moral, attained by the saints in the presence of God Beatitude - The saints enjoy the beatific vision of God.
How the Ten Commandments relate to the Beatitudes The Ten Commandments are what we must do to gain eternal life The Beatitudes are what we must become to behold the beatific vision / eternal life
The Beatitudes I. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The glory of human ambition must be left behind when Yahweh said to Moses The Lord your God you shall adore and Him only shall you serve. The perfect Beatitude is humility of spirit. Humility is necessary for proper detachment of the things of the world like power and wealth, so divine life can flow to & through you to the world.
II. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Good feelings and pleasure can be addictive like power and wealth. They distort our view of life and the world, keeping us from the truly sorrowful and fallen nature of man without God. Those who mourn for their sins know that suffering cannot detach us from divine love.
III. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the land. Meekness runs contrary to our natural instincts. Meekness is being humble, gentle, and patient, especially under trial, distress and injustice. Meekness renounces power, earthly glory and control. By letting go we open divine life for us.
IV. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. God s ways are righteous; they are just, holy, and rightly ordered. Righteousness a grace filled response away from man s desires for wealth, pleasure, power, and honor. Seek first his kingdom and righteousness and all these things shall be yours as well. (MT 6:33)
V. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Hesed, or tender mercy, is God s greatest characteristic in the Old Testament. In the New Testament it s called agape which is pure, disinterested love. To be merciful is to love with the heart of God. Be merciful, Jesus said, as your Father is merciful. (LK 6:36) If you are merciful, you are like God.
VI. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Also translated as singleness of heart or blessed are the single-hearted. A person who is single-hearted (pure of heart) knows what his life is about; He is free of distractions, entirely given to pursuing holiness. Strive for peace with all men and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. (Heb 12:14)
VII. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Peace with God and with ourselves is established when we are reconciled to God through the new covenant established by Christ s salvific work on the Cross.
VIII. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Jesus promised the disciples would encounter persecutions as they lived and preached the Gospel Just like the prophets in the Old Testament. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. (MT 5:12) It is paradoxically a sign of hope, for it demonstrates the detachment from worldly approval.
The Beatitudes are characteristics of God as exemplified in Jesus. I. Humility II. Detachment from worldly pleasure, power and wealth. III. Meekness, faith in God (the Father) under duress. IV. Righteousness: the ways of God; the Right relationship V. Mercy. VI. Detached from wealth, pleasure, power, and honor. VII. Reconciled with God the Father. VIII. Detachment from worldly honor.
The Beatitudes are characteristics of God as exemplified in Jesus. St. Thomas Aquinas said the beatitudes are best exemplified in the Crucifixion so that you will be happy if you shun what Jesus shunned and love what He loved. Christ shunned wealth (stripped naked), pleasure (intense physical and psychological pain), power (nailed to the cross), and honor (publically mocked and taunted).
