1 1 2 5/6/90 Mark 16 Jesus has been crucified and placed in the tomb and the hope of all who followed Him is dim and only the women observed where they laid Jesus. 16:1-8 The resurrection of Jesus. * The parallel passages. Matt. 28:1-10;Lk. 24:1-12; Jn.20: :1-4 The women went to the tomb. 1) The company that travelled to the tomb, Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. vs. 1 a) The end of the Sabbath was Saturday after 6:00 P.M. sundown. b) This would be the start of Sunday. 2) The same women that looked at Jesus on the cross from afar. Mk. 15:40 a) Luke adds Joanna. Lk. 24:10 b) Mary Magdelene had been delivered from seven demons by Jesus. 3) They were coming to anoint the body of Jesus with spices. 1)) God knowing the insufficient time there would be had Jesus anointed by Mary for His burial before. Mk. 14:8 2)) If they had believe that Jesus was going to rise, they would not have come to anoint the body, but rather to see Him raised. 2) The time is stated, Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. vs. 2 a) Luke and John also indicate it as the first day of the week, Sunday. Lk. 24:1; Jn. 20:1 b) Matthew says, at dawn. Matt. 28:1 c) John says, while it was still dark. Jn. 20:1 * It was about 2 miles from Bethany to the tomb. 3) The conversation of the women, And they said among themselves, Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us? vs. 3 a) Literally, they kept on saying among themselves. b) They were not expecting the resurrection! 1)) There was an earthquake, the angel descended and rolled away the stone and sat on it and the guards trembled and became as dead men. Matt. 28:2-4 2)) The stone was rolled away to let them in not to let Jesus out as evident by John. Jn. 19:19, 26

2 3 4 4) The unexpected sight, But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away--for it was very large. vs. 4 a) The word but marks the sharp contrast to their expectation. b) The size of the stone emphesizes their previous concern of moving it to enter the tomb. 16:5-8 The women entered the tomb. 1) The first thing they saw, And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. vs. 5 a) Young man in the long white rob was an angel. Lk. 24:4 1)) Luke and John record two angels. Lk. 24:4; Jn. 20:12 2)) Two angels went down to Sodom to declare judgment. Gen.19 3)) An angel shut the lions mouth to protect Daniel all night. Dan. 6 4)) One angel sent out by God killed 185,000 Assyrians in one night. 2King.19:35 5)) Angels are ministering spirits to heirs of salvation. Heb. 1:14 6)) Some have entertain angels unawares. Heb. 13:2 7)) Angels were at the birth of Jesus, His temptation and at Gethsemane. b) The right side as would be the case if you enter the tomb at Garden next to Calvary. 1)) John says one was at the head, the other at the feet. Jn. 20:12 2)) The linen was intact and the face cloth folded by itself. Jn. 20:6-7 c) The response was to be alarmed ekthambeo to throw into terror and astounded. 2) The first thing they heard, But he said to them, Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. vs. 6 a) The angel conforted the women, Do not be alarned. b) The angel confirmed their come to seek Jesus of Nazareth, emphesized His Incarantion. c) Who was crucified, past tense. d) Who is risen, present and continuous. e) The angel pointed to the evidence, He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. * Luke tell us the angel said, Why do you seek the living among the dead? Lk. 24:5 3) The angel gave the women a message for the apostles, But go, tell His disciples--and Peter--that He is going before you into

3 5 6 Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you. vs. 7 a) Jesus had told them before. Mk. 14:28 b) Tell His disciples and Peter, to give him comforting reassurance that his denial was forgiven. 4) The left the tomb in obedience, So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. vs. 8 a) Trembled and in ecstasy and fear, a great mixture of emotions accompanying the miraculous event. b) The fact that they said nothing to anyone, indicated any other person, for they were sent to the apostles. 1)) Mary Magdalene told the disciples, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him. Jn.20:2. c) At this point there are those who say the gospel ends, denying and rejection the remainder of the text. Mk. 16:9-20 * But to me it seems too abrupt and hopeless. 5) The rejection is based on literary criticism. a) Textual criticism. 1)) Because vs do not appear in the 16:9 oldest manuscripts that we possess from the 4th Century, the Sainiaticus and Vaticanus. 2)) There are copies shortly after the year 400 that do have these versus. 3)) But even Vaticanus B has a blank column at the end with the words according to Mark, showing the knowledge of a longer ending. b) Internal evidence. 1)) New words which don t appear prior. 2)) Style, etc., which mean nothing! c) Content. 1)) In comparison to other gospels. 2)) In contrast the vast majority of Greek manuscripts, lectionaries and ancient versions show the long ending from verses )) And Tertulian who lived from A. D. and Hipolytus from A. D. both quote from the rejected long ending. 4)) These same, so called scholars will reject the story of the woman caught in adultery in Jn. 8, while it is found in over 900 manuscripts, but not in the Sainaiticus and Vaticanus. 16:9-11 The Lord Jesus appeared to Mary Nagdalene. a)

4 7 8 16:9 The first witness of the resurrection. 1) The initiator is always Jesus, Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. vs. 9a * The first day again is Sunday morning. 2) The first appearance to Mary is very brief in Mark. vs. 9b a) John gives the more detalied account. Jn. 20:13-17 b) The angels asked Mary why she was weeping, then Jesus appeared and asked her the same thing. Thinking He was the gardener she asked where His body might be to carry it away. Jesus called out her name Mary and she recognized Jesus. Jesus told her not to cling to Him for He had not ascended yet to His Father. 3) The comentary allows us to better understand Mary s presence at the tomb, in gratitude and love for the Lord Jesus having delivered her from seven demons. vs. 9c 16:10-11 The first report of the resurrection. 1) The faithful witness, She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. vs. 10 a) Their condition was one of hoplessness. b) They had not seen Jesus. 2) The unbelieving disciples, And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. vs. 11 a) They denied the visible and audible evidence by Jesus. b) They acted in unbelief. 1)) Luke says, It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. Lk. 24:10-11 * The phrase idle tales means nonsense. 2)) John says, Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her. Jn 20:18 16:12-13 The Lord Jesus appeared to two disciples. 16:12 The second witness of the resurrection. 1) The appearance of Jesus was different than to Mary, After that, He appeared in another form to two of them. a) The word form mophe refers to the outward visible appearance of Jesus. b) Two according to the law to varify something. Deut. 19:15

5 9 10 2) The location stated, as they walked and went into the country. vs. 12 a) Luke provides the lengthy account. Lk. 24:13-32 b) The location was on the Road to Emmaus and the two men did not recognized Jesus restrained their eyes as He spoke to them in their hopless condition about Jesus not having risen. c) They told Jesus about the report of Mary and the women, Then He said to them, O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. d) Jesus openned their eyes as He ate with them and they said, Did not our hearts burn within us as He openned the Scriptures to us? 16:13 The second report of the resurrection. 1) The two men on the Road to Emmaus were faithful witnesses, And they went and told it to the rest. vs. 13a a) Luke tells us they went to tell the eleven and those with them. Lk. 24:33 b) Also that Jesus had appeared to Peter. Lk. 24:34 2) Their witness was not believed, but they did not believe them either. vs. 13b * This is the natural tendency of man, a heart of unbelief! 16:14-18 The Great Commission imparted. 16:14-16 The proclamation to the twelve apostles. 1) The stern reproof for their unbelief, Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. vs. 14 a) They did not believe the women. b) They dis not believe the two men on the Road to Emmaus. 2) The command to proclaim the gospel, And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. vs. 15 a) The first was in Jerusalem. Jn. 20:21-23 b) The second was at Galilee. Matt. 28:16-20 c) The third was at Jerusalem at Mount of Olives. Lk. 24:44-49; Acts 1:3-8 * Jesus breathed on them the Holy Spirit and gave them the authority to tell sinners their sins were forgiven or not based if the repented of their sins

Jn. 20: ) The results of believing or disbelieving the gospel, He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. vs. 16 a) Believes the gospel message about who is, the atonement accomplished and that they are a sinner. b) Baptism follow regeneration through repentance, but not requirement for salvation. lpet. 3: )) The thief on cross was save, but not baptized. Lk. 23:43. 2)) Baptism should be taught and practiced, but it does not complete salvation. Rom. 6:1-6; 1Cor.1:17 16:17-18 The miraculous signs God would perform through believers going out in the Great Commission. 1) The gifts of the Spirit, And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues. vs. 17 a) Cast out demons in the name of Jesus. * Jesus did it and Paul in Acts. b) Speak with new tongues, a heavenly language, not an earthly one. a) At Pentecost the spoke in the many dialects, not glossialia. b) Tongues is manifested through Acts and taught in the epistles. Rom. 12; 1Cor ) The protection of God, they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. vs. 18 a) Not to tempt God, but when encountered in the mission field. * This is God s protection in the mission field. Acts 28:3 b) To drink anything deadly refers to the mission field again, as people attempt to poinson the missinaries. c) To lay hands on the sick and they will recover, also the mission field. * Jesus healed many, there are many examples in Acts and the Epistles teach Divine healing. 16:19-20 The ascension of Jesus.d 16:19 The present position of Jesus in heaven. 1) The return was to be received by the Father back to heaven from where He came, So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven. vs. 19a-c a) Jesus led them out as far as Bethany. Lk. 24:50 b) Mount of Olives. Acts 1:9-11

7 2) The position was of mediator and judge, and sat down at the right hand of God. vs. 19 a) The position of sitting refers to the finished work for salvation for all sinners. b) The right hand is that of priviledge, authority and power to forgive sins and judge those who do not trpent. Acts 7:55; Rom. 8:34; Eph. 1:20; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3 16:20 The proclamation of the gospel by the apostles. 1) They were obedient to the Great Commission, And they went out and preached everywhere. vs. 20a 2) They were the mere instruments, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. vs. 20b-c * Not signs and wonders first to attrack or save sinner like the Vineyard Movement used to teach! 13 14
