A No Ordinary Man Walking With the Servant Savior Mark 16:1-20 Inductive Women s Bible Fellowship Lesson 21 group of women walk toward the garden tomb carrying spices to anoint the body. Soon the morning sun will crest the hill and paint the most memorable dawn of all time. But their eyes don t see the beautiful sunrise; their ears don t appreciate the sounds of life stirring and waking around them. They are tired, weighed down with grief. The past two days have been darker than the darkest night. Their world has spiraled out of control and now they cling to the only thing they know to do. For years, these women have followed and served the Lord and His disciples. Whatever needed to be done. Prepare a meal or mend a coat. They are doers, and death can t take away their desire to serve Him. So they come, with aching hearts, to do this one last thing. Who will roll away the stone for us? Perhaps Mary Magdalene was the first to notice the massive stone had been moved. From John s account, we know that the sight of an empty tomb broke her heart all over again. Woman, why are you weeping? the angels asked. All she could see through grief-clouded eyes were grave clothes where there should have been a body. They have taken away my Lord She couldn t bear to look couldn t bear to think what more had been done to Him. Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? the Man asked. Thinking the gardener might help, she asked where she could find her Lord. Then she heard her name and recognized the tender, familiar voice. He is alive! The Son has risen! Getting started. Find a quiet place to study. Take your Bible, your lesson and any other study tools you want to use. Begin with prayer. Take time to settle your heart, focus your thoughts and ask the Lord to help you see with clear eyes. Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in Your law. Psalm 119:18 NLT Mark 16:1-20 Read the passage two or three times without interruption. If possible, read from more than one Bible translation. Briefly describe in your own words what is happening

The translation used will vary from week to week. Working Text for Mark 16:1-20 New King James Version (NKJV) 1 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 And they said among themselves, Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us? 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away for it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you. 8 So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. 9 Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. 12 After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either. 2
14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. 19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. Scripture taken from the New King James Version by Thomas Nelson Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved. 3
Write down your OBSERVATIONS Read the section and record what you see. Use the first column to keep track of what you find in the Bible passage. (Who? What? When? Where?) Follow along with Mark as he tells the story. Look for clues that tell you when and where the story is taking place. Who is mentioned and what part do they play? What events are recorded? Use the second column to record information you gather from other sources. Are more details of the story recorded in another gospel? What else can you discover about the people and places mentioned? You may want to look up names and places in a Bible dictionary, map or encyclopedia. You can also use this section to jot down your own thoughts and impressions about people and events. Imagine the people, places and events you read about. Don t use your imagination to produce facts but use it to bring those biblical facts to life. Mark 16:1-8 Bible Facts and Information: My Research and Observations: 4
Mark 16:9-13 Bible Facts and Information: My Research and Observations: Mark 16:14-18 Bible Facts and Information: My Research and Observations: 5
Mark 16:19-20 Bible Facts and Information: My Research and Observations: Key Words and Phrases Key words and phrases help us understand the main point the writer wants to make. How do we recognize key words and phrases? Here are some simple things to look for. When you see a word or phrase that is repeated, you can be sure it was important to the writer in making his point. A key verse spotlights the main idea, while the surrounding verses support and add detail. You may need to read through the chapter several times before you re able to identify the key verse. If you are unfamiliar with a word or its meaning, it becomes a key word for you. Take time to learn the definition so you will understand how it is being used in the sentence. List any key words and phrases you found in Mark 16:1-20. Write the definition of the following words or phrases. Use a regular dictionary or a concordance with a Greek Dictionary if you have one. trembled (vs. 8) amazed (vs. 8) afraid (vs. 8) He appeared (vs. 9, 12, 14) 6
INTERPRETATION What does it mean? Look for a spiritual lesson. Be careful not to read into the Bible an idea that is not there. Examine each verse in light of the verses around it. To help you find a spiritual lesson, ask questions such as, Is there a command to obey? A promise to claim? A condition to that promise? Is there a warning to heed? An example to follow or avoid? State the lesson in one simple sentence. APPLICATION How does it apply to me? We don t study the Bible just to gather information we want to spiritually grow. Our heart needs to be open to change. The only way to move truth off the pages of your Bible and into your life is to put it into action. To apply a spiritual lesson, we must examine ourselves and take deliberate steps to do something with what we have learned. Ask yourself: Is this a new lesson, or does it reinforce what I already know? What does it challenge me to do? Does it point out error in my attitude or actions? What changes does it require? Think of how the lesson relates to you and what specific course of action you will take. Write your application in the form of a question to make it personal. Mark 16:1-8 Lesson: Application: Mark 16:9-13 Lesson: Application: Mark 16:14-18 Lesson: Application: Mark 16:19-20 Lesson: Application: 7
Summary Write a simple sentence that summarizes what the passage is about. Give a title to the chapter that will help you personally to remember it. Take A Closer Look Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. And they went out and preached everywhere Mark 16:15, 20a The obedience of the Lord s disciples not just the eleven, but all His devoted followers is not recorded by Mark simply as a happy conclusion to this amazing account. It is a model for every believer to follow. In practical terms, how can we preach the gospel everywhere? The word preach simply means, to announce or proclaim openly. We do this by sharing what we have experienced by God s grace, and what we have learned by studying God s Word, as a natural part of everyday conversations and situations. Do you proclaim Him? When we openly proclaim (with our lips and our lives) the gospel, there will be opportunities to lead a lost soul to the Savior or strengthen another believer in faith. If you were given an opportunity today to share the good news based on Mark s gospel what would you say? Prepare a simple and clear presentation that could be shared in five minutes or less. 8
Come and hear, all who fear God, and I will tell you what He has done for my soul. Psalm 66:16 As we come to the end of Mark s Gospel, take time to review the insights God has given you during the course of this study. Looking back over your weekly lessons and notes, briefly share how you have grown in your relationship with the Lord and with others as a result of studying and applying God s Word in your life. Something to... Proclaim! Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. Psalm 96:2 Proclaim the name of the Lord; ascribe greatness to our God! Deuteronomy 32:3 I will Proclaim Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the congregation, I will sing Your praise. Hebrews 2:12 I Proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving and declare all Your wonders. Psalm 26:7 Proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light! 1 Peter 2:9 9
