2 BIBLICAL TEXT Luke 24:44 49(ESV) 44 Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.

3 BIBLICAL TEXT Luke 24:44 49 (ESV) 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,

4 BIBLICAL TEXT Luke 24:44 49 (ESV) 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.

5 BIBLICAL TEXT Luke 24:44 49 (ESV) 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.

7 BACKGROUND Jesus Christ had been raised from the dead Different people had encounters with him The first witnesses to the resurrection were women

12 JESUS AND THE WOMEN (1-12) The women and the angels (4-9) The two men had dazzling apparel They asked the women Why do you seek the living among the dead? The men responded He is not here, but has risen

13 JESUS AND THE WOMEN (1-12) The women and the angels (4-9) They continued Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise

14 JESUS AND THE WOMEN (1-12) The women and the eleven (10-12) The women remembered his words The women witness to the eleven and the other disciples Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women spoke to the apostles

15 JESUS AND THE WOMEN (1-12) The women and the eleven (10-12) These words seemed an idle tale λῆρος (lēros)- idle talk, nonsense, chatter It was totally incomprehensible The eleven and the others did not believe them

16 JESUS AND THE WOMEN (1-12) The women and the eleven (10-12) But Peter rose and ran to the tomb He saw the linen cloths by themselves He went home marveling θαυμάζω (thaumazō)- to be amazed, in wonder, astonished, surprised

17 JESUS AND THE TWO (13-35) The two walked and spoke about Jesus (13-14) The two did not recognize Jesus (15-24) The two were taught by Jesus (25-29) The two recognized Jesus (30-32) The two witnessed about Jesus (33-35)

18 JESUS AND THE TWO (13-35) The two walked and spoke about Jesus (13-14) They were on their way to a village called Emmaus It was a distance of sixty stadia (6.6 miles or 10.8 kilometers) They were discussing what had occurred

19 JESUS AND THE TWO (13-35) The two did not recognize Jesus (15-24) Jesus walked up to join them Their eyes were kept from recognizing him Christ asked them what they were talking about The two were sad and downcast Jesus continues to walk alongside them

20 JESUS AND THE TWO (13-35) The two did not recognize Jesus (15-24) They started to tell Jesus what had happened: Christ was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and the people The rulers delivered him to be crucified The disciples hoped that Jesus would redeem Israel However, some had testified that he had risen

21 JESUS AND THE TWO (13-35) The two were taught by Jesus (25-29) Christ admonishes them: O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets he interpreted Scripture to them concerning himself They arrived at Emmaus and invited Jesus to stay

22 JESUS AND THE TWO (13-35) The two recognized Jesus (30-32) Jesus blessed, broke the bread and gave them some Their eyes were opened and they recognized him Jesus disappears from their sight The two shared their experience with each other

23 JESUS AND THE TWO (13-35) The two witnessed about Jesus (33-35) They immediately returned to Jerusalem They found the eleven and others The group spoke about the Lord s resurrection The two listened about the Lord appearing to Simon The two also witnessed about seeing Jesus

24 JESUS AND THE ELEVEN (36-49) Jesus appears to the eleven (36-43) Jesus teaches the eleven (44-48) Jesus instructs the eleven (49)

25 JESUS AND THE ELEVEN (36-49) Jesus appears to the eleven (36-43) Jesus stands among them The group is startled and frightened They believe they are seeing a spirit Jesus shows them he is not a spirit by eating some fish

26 JESUS AND THE ELEVEN (36-49) Jesus teaches the eleven (44-48) Jesus reminds them what he previously said to them Jesus fulfilled what was in the law of Moses, the Prophets and Psalms (Jesus Bible) Jesus opens up their minds so that they can understand the Scriptures

27 JESUS AND THE ELEVEN (36-49) Jesus teaches the eleven (44-48) Jesus tells them that his death and resurrection were necessary In addition, repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations They are witnesses of these things
