2 FROM THE RECTORY Dear friends, Our annual Rogationtide Service at Sutton Maddock Church falls on 25 th May, Like Ash Wednesday, Ascension Day and Mothering Sunday the date is dependent on Easter Sunday. It is the second of the traditional four farming services, after Plough Sunday and before Lammas and Harvest. It started in France in the 5 th Century when a series of natural disasters ruined the spring crops. The Bishop ordered prayers to be said in church for God s protection from further calamities and for God s blessing on the crops that survived. This practice was taken up in other parts of France, and soon became part of the whole Church s calendar. The earliest description of it in Britain is from 1200AD when there were processions with banners showing a lion and a dragon (representing Christ and the devil) as well as images of saints. These processions turned into beating the bounds when clergy led the congregation along the parish boundary both to pray for the spring crops in the fields and also to teach children where the parish boundaries were. Some country parishes have revived this custom, but the one I best remember was in the middle of Oxford. On placement as a student at the clergy training college, the extrovert vicar of St Michaels at the Northgate maintained the tradition of beating the bounds on Ascension Day started in No longer, however, are there fields but businesses and colleges. By arrangement he led the choir and anyone who cared to join them up and over college walls by ladders, and through shops, the covered market and down alleys. At various points there were permanent boundary markers including - I well remember a cross in the carpeted women s clothing section of Marks and Spencer, and on the floor of Woolworth s records and tapes section. At each point the vicar encouraged the choir boys to beat the boundary symbol with names given out at church and shout Mark, Mark, Mark. At the end of the procession was a three course meal in Lincoln Oxford College where they served in tankards their brew of ivy bitter made with a secret recipe. We will be doing nothing like that at Sutton Maddock, although in the past walks were organised. Nowadays we simply start the service at the porch from where we can see the local fields and crops and then move into the church for our service. If you wish to join us we start at. With best wishes for the spring. Keith Hodson - 2 -

4 CONDOLENCES We extend our sympathies to the family of the late Martin Cheshire, age 37, of Beckbury whose service was held at Beckbury Church on 27 th March We also extend our sympathies to the family of the late Garry Hotchkiss, age 63, of Aqueduct whose service was held at Sutton Maddock Church on 1 st April We extend our sympathies also to the family of the late Jim Hardy, age 96, of Wolverhampton whose ashes were interred at Stockton Church on 19 th April We also extend our sympathies to the family of the late Victoria Ann Marie Lamb (nee Collings), age 46, of Beckbury (formerly of Ryton) whose service was held at Telford Crematorium on 17 th April Friends may attend the interment of ashes at Denton Pool Pastures at 12 noon 10 th May. JOHN UNITT CANCER FUND Following the death of John Unitt from Lung Cancer in November 2013, his grandson Jhonathon and his wife, four friends and two children pulled a cart from the first farm where John had worked at in Coven for the 15 miles to Richard Solari s Farm here in Beckbury where he worked until retirement, along the way collecting donations in memory of a kind, selfless man of the soil. This was in aid of MACMILLAN whose carers support and assistance during John s final weeks went far in excess of anyone s hopes and expectations. If you also would like to make a donation to MACMILLAN whose carers have made a difference to so many people s final days, please send any donations (cheques made out to MACMILLAN) to Jean Unitt, No 4 The Bungalows, Heath House Farm, Beckbury or to Havenside, Caynton Road, Beckbury, which will then be forwarded to Jean. Alternatively donate by texting JWGU81 5 to Or visit SIX PARISHES FRIENDSHIP CLUB Ashwood Nurseries near Kingswinford was the venue for our April meeting when 20 members enjoyed looking around a very different garden centre, with marvellous plants on sale, a very upmarket gift shop offering Moorcroft Pottery at eye watering prices and a very busy restaurant with mouthwatering food. An interesting point was that owner John Massey opens his own private garden to the public on 7 th June, 19 th July and 27 th September with all proceeds going to Stroke Support West Midlands, a worthy cause and a lovely garden to walk round. Following on to this visit, on 13 th May we are going to see the Apley Walled Garden project when we shall be given a guided tour around the gardens which are being recreated as in their heyday by the head gardener. The cost for this visit is 5.00 each, and cars will be leaving from the Church at 1.45pm. On 10 th June we are going out for the day to Llandudno, the coach will leave Beckbury at 9.45am and we hope to arrive home at around 7.30pm. The cost per person is each and as we have booked a 29 seater coach there are a few seats spare on a first come basis. As promised last month here are two more pictures of our members in their younger days
5 A CELEBRATION CONCERT WE HAVE RAISED THE ROOF St Andrew s Church Ryton and Grindle WITH THE DARBY SINGERS SATURDAY 10 TH MAY AT 7.30PM Drinks, nibbles, raffle 6.50 per ticket, children under 11 free. Tickets available from Barbara Powell, BECKBURY PARISH COUNCIL Meeting held on 2 nd April Regrettably Councillor John Evans has retired from Beckbury Parish Council after many years of service. We thank him and wish him well for the future. There is now a vacancy on the Council. If anyone is interested in being co-opted please get in touch with either myself (750393) or our Clerk, Les Oakley (612294) The replies to the Parish Plan Questionnaire revealed that some people were concerned that the roadside verges were not being maintained. The Parish Council understands that responsibility for this rests with the Highways Department of the Local Authority. Anyone concerned about any verges needing maintenance should contact Shropshire County Council Highways Department. Any problems or other obvious road defects needing repair should also be notified. David Cummings - Chairman CLUBS, GROUPS AND SOCIETIES IN BECKBURY At the time of completing the Beckbury Parish Plan Questionnaire a number of parishioners stated that they would be interested in taking part in and/or leading clubs, societies or groups within the village. We intend to call a meeting of all interested parishioners but first would invite anyone, even if you gave your contact details in the questionnaire to contact Heather Thomas on or dr.heatherthomas@btinternet.com or pop a note in the letterbox of 64 Beckbury. We can then find a mutually convenient date to meet and discuss how we may move forward with your ideas Heather Thomas, Beckbury Parish Council.
6 DOG OWNERS There have recently been numerous complaints about thoughtless dog owners leaving dog faeces on the ground rather than collecting it for deposit in bins. The main areas are: THE CHURCHYARD - whilst there is a public footpath through the churchyard it is an offence to let dogs run free, fouling paths and also around the graves, please control your pets and clean up after them. STREETS - this is the same problem as above and mainly affecting parents taking children to and from school. PLAYING FIELD - dogs are not allowed on the playing field, owners of dogs who let their dogs run on the field are liable to a maximum fine of 1,000. HORSE RIDERS with dogs running free are breaking local by-laws which state that all dogs in our villages should be on leads, please control your dogs or leave them at home. Finally, of late, we have a black and white collie type dog running free around Beckbury, will the owner please take steps to stop this happening. Whilst it is appreciated that the majority of dog owners are very responsible and caring, unfortunately it is just a small minority who are making it difficult for people to enjoy walking round the village. 9 ALBRIGHTON PATIENTS GROUP Patient Survey Action Plan: The patient survey has now been analysed and an action plan compiled to address issues that were raised by the survey. A report and copy of the action plan can be viewed on the Practice Website: Out of Hours Provision Shropdoc: Several concerns were raised in the patient survey with regard to accessing care when the surgery is closed and we felt that an explanation of what is available to patients would be helpful. Shropdoc is commissioned to provide cover for the patients of Albrighton Medical Practice for out of hours cover. Shropdoc is a co-operative of local GPs from both Shropshire and Telford. As these GPs are all working in the Shropshire area they have local knowledge of the area, community services and the hospitals. All of the doctors from the surgery work regularly for Shropdoc, so if you do have cause to use Shropdoc it may be that you see or speak to one of the doctors from your own surgery and if not it is likely to be a doctor from one of the neighbouring practices. If you do contact Shropdoc, a report is sent to your own surgery the next day for the attention of your GP to keep them fully informed and for them to take any necessary action. The GPs at Albrighton Medical Practice recommend you to contact Shropdoc for any urgent medical attention required whilst the surgery is closed, the number is Please be aware that if you dial 111 you may not be transferred to Shropdoc. EMIS Access Online Services appointment booking and repeat prescriptions: For those patients who are not aware there is a facility to order repeat medication online as well as to book appointments, should they so wish. To be able to do this they will need to contact the surgery to request a password to enable access to the system. Once they have a password they are able to access the appointment booking and repeat prescribing system via the Practice website: New Service for Cancer Patients in Shropshire: A new service called Get Active, Feel Good has been started for patients in Shropshire who have been diagnosed or are in treatment for cancer. It is run by a joint cooperation between Macmillan Cancer Support and Shropshire Council Public Health. It aims to provide advice, guidance and practical methods of dealing with the actuality of diagnoses. Based at the Hamer Centre at Shrewsbury Royal Hospital the contact person is Kim Davies or at Getactivefeelgood@gmail.com. Patients can be referred by their GP or can self-refer themselves.
