PRESERVICE MUSIC GREETING GOD GATHERS US IN HIS PRESENCE THE BELLS We Sing the Almighty Power of God 2:42 [24] (In reverent awe we stand and face the cross of our Lord at the entrance. The pianist leads us in singing praise. As the processional cross passes, you, turn and continue to focus your eyes and heart on the cross. We do this to remind ourselves Jesus' death for us draws us here to be served by Him and serve Him as members of His family, the church.) OPENING HYMN: "We Sing the Almighty Power of God" By: Isaac Watts LW 441 We sing the almighty power of God, Who bade the mountains rise, Who spread the flowing seas abroad And built the lofty skies. We sing the wisdom that ordained The sun to rule the day; The moon shines to at his command, And all the stars obey. We sing the goodness of the Lord, Who fills the earth with food, Who formed his creatures by a word And then pronounced them good. Lord, how your wonders are displayed Each time we turn our eyes To view the ground on which we tread Or gaze up at the skies! There s not a plant or flower below But makes your glories known; 2

And clouds arise and tempests blow By order from your throne. On you each moment we depend; If you withdraw, we die. Oh, may we never god offend, Our God, forever nigh! Lutheran Worship Author: Johann B. Konig Tune: Ich Singe Dir 1 st Published in: 1715 WE UNITE AS GOD S FAMILY AND IN HIS NAME The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their baptisms connecting them to Christ s forgiving sacrifice. We begin our service in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THANKSGIVING Let us give thanks to the Father who created us and preserves us to this day. We praise You, Father, for giving us everything we need to support our body and life. Let us give thanks to the Son who redeemed us with His holy precious blood. We praise You, Lord Jesus, for the forgiveness and peace You won for us. Let us give thanks to the Holy Spirit who called us into the family of believers through our baptisms. We praise You, Lord, for Your help and blessings in our lives. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Let us confess our sins, knowing that before God we should plead guilty of all sins, even those we are not aware of. I, a poor sinner, plead guilty before God of all my sins. At times I have served unfaithfully and have not done what is required of me. I have angered those around me and have provoked them to curse 3

and swear. I have been negligent toward others and have caused damage to be done. My words and deeds have been offensive. I have quarreled with my peers. I have aggravated my spouse, my children, my friends, and my co-workers. For these things, I am truly sorry, and plead for Your infinite grace and mercy. I want to do better. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare unto you the forgiveness of all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE "In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light my strength my song This Cornerstone this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love what depths of peace When fears are stilled when strivings cease My Comforter my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand In Christ alone who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless Babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save 'Til on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For ev'ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine 4

Bought with the precious blood of Christ No guilt in life no fear in death This is the pow'r of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No pow'r of hell no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand 'Til He returns or calls me home Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand CCLI Song # Thankyou Music Keith Getty Stuart Townend For use solely with the SongSelect Terms of Use. Help us to use wisely that which has been entrusted to us, for the well-being of our families and for all people, and for the advancement of Your kingdom; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 6 SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know Your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow His steps in the way that leads to life eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 51:4-6 Give attention to me, my people, and give ear to me, my nation; for a law will go out from me, and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples. My righteousness draws near, my salvation has gone out, and my arms will judge the peoples; the coastlands hope for me, and for my arm they wait. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, he earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. 6

THE EPISTLE READING Jude But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. (Please rise.) ALLELUIA AND VERSE 7

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 13:24-37 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the thirteenth P chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or in the morning lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to You, O Christ. CHILDREN'S MESSAGE HYMN "We Give Thee But Thine Own" LW 405: 1-6 By: William W. How We give you but your own In any gifts we bring; 8

All that we have is your alone, A trust from you, our King. May we your bounties thus As stewards true receive And gladly, Lord, as you bless us, To you our first fruits give. Hearts still are bruised and dead, And homes are bare and cold, And lambs for whom the Shepherd bled Are straying from the fold. To comfort and to bless, To find a balm for woe, To tend those lost in loneliness Is angels work below. The captive to release, The lost to God to bring, To teach the way of life and peace, It is a Christ-like thing. And we believe your word, Though dim our faith, it s true: What we do for your people, Lord, We do it all for you. Notes: Hymn #405 from Lutheran Worship Author: William H. Monk Tune: Energy 1 st Published in: 1864 SERMON THE APOSTLES CREED (With All Christians We Proclaim Our Convictions) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. 9

He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Father, we are Your people and we come together to do Your work. Make us one in spirit and purpose, increase our faith, and fill us with zeal for Your Church and its work. Lord, in Your mercy: Hear our prayer. We thank You for Your Word and the Holy Sacraments, for the blessings of the Gospel ministry in our midst, and for the services of Your house. Preserve us in our faith, protect us from trouble and temptation, and give us joy in our service. Lord, in Your mercy: Hear our prayer. Father, we ask Your blessing on the programs of Christian education in our congregation. Make our people hungry for Your Word. Enlighten those who teach. Help those who learn that all of us understand the truth, truly believe it, and by Your grace, live according to it. Lord, in Your mercy: Hear our prayer. 11

Help us take seriously Your command to preach the Gospel to all people, and show us ways to accomplish this great task in our generation. Let all people now living, including those in our own community, hear of Your love and mercy and be offered the gift of life and salvation. Lord, in Your mercy: Hear our prayer. Father, the work You give us to do is great, important, and costly. Make us generous in our offerings that Your work may never falter or lag because of our selfishness. Prevent us from measuring the quality of life by the quantity of our possessions, and teach us to give according to the measure of Your blessings to us. Lord, in Your mercy: Hear our prayer. We praise you Lord for Kevin Silva, Rosita Sanchez, Stephanie Villasenor, Alexi Zavala and Betty Romero this week of their birthdays! Draw them closer to you. Use them always to your glory and the good of your people. O Holy Spirit, we praise you for Martha Cisneros and Rosie Rodriguez celebrating this week, rebirth and adoption into your family, the church, by your Holy Baptism. O Spirit of power, make them bold to live for you by serving others, bold to learn, and speak Your Word, bold to be known for obedience to you. Into Your hands, Father, we commend ourselves, our congregation, and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GOD GIVES US THE GIFT OF HIS SACRAMENT Please see the back of the bulletin for our communion practice. PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. 12

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is good and right to do so. To praise and give thanks to You, O God, is good and right in all times and all places. You open Your hand and generously provide for the needs of all creatures. Help us always to recognize that all things come from You so we may receive and use them with thankful hearts. Therefore, with angels and archangels and all the saints in heaven, we join together to sing Your praises: SANCTUS THE LORD'S PRAYER: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 13

CHRIST S WORDS OF CONSECRATION Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup after supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you! People Amen! AGNUS DEI LW pg. 172 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace. DISTRIBUTION HYMNS "What is This Bread?" LSB 629 What is this bread? Christ s body risen from the dead: This bread we break, This life we take, Was crushed to pay for our release. O taste and see the Lord is peace. What is this wine? The blood of Jesus shed for mine; The cup of grace Brings His embrace 14

Of life and love until I sing! O taste and see the Lord is King. So who am I, That I should live and He should die Under the rod? My God, my God, Why have You not forsaken me? O taste and see the Lord is free. Yet is God here? Oh, yes! By Word and promise clear, In mouth and soul He makes us whole Christ, truly present in this meal. O taste and see the Lord is real. Is this for me? I am forgiven and set free! I do believe That I receive His very body and His blood. O taste and see the Lord is good. The Lord forgives my sins, And he relieves my pain; The Lord has healed my sicknesses And made me whole again. He crowns my life with love, 15

He ransoms from the grave; He that redeemed my soul from hell Has sov reign pow r to save He fills the poor with good; He gives the suff ers rest; The Lord has judgments for the proud, Relief for those oppressed. His works and laws and ways He made by Moses known But showed the world his loving heart In Christ, his only Son. "Oh, That I Had a Thousand Voices" LW 448: 1, 4, 5 Oh, that I had a thousand voices To praise my God with thousand tongues! My heart, which in the Lord rejoices, Would then proclaim in grateful songs To all, wherever I might be, What great things God has done for me. All creatures that have breath and motion, That throng the earth, the sea, the sky, Come, share with me my heart s devotion, Help me to sing God s praises high. My utmost pow rs can never quite Declare the wonders of his might. Creator, humbly I implore you To listen to my earthly song Until that day when I adore you, When I have joined the angel throng And learned with choirs of heav n to sing Eternal anthems to my king. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Grant, O Lord, that the lips which have sung Your praise in the sanctuary may glorify You in the world, that the ears which have heard the voice of Your songs 16

may be closed to the voice of clamor and dispute, that the eyes which have seen Your great love may also behold Your blessed hope, that the tongues which have confessed Your name may ever speak the truth, and that the bodies of all who have tasted of Your Son's living body and blood may be restored to newness of life; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. [Worship Supplement, p ] THE PASTORAL BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
