PRESERVICE MUSIC GREETING GOD GATHERS US IN HIS PRESENCE BELLS 5:16[41] Angels from the Realms of Glory (In reverent awe we stand and face the cross of our Lord at the entrance. The pianist leads us in singing praise. As the processional cross passes, you, turn and continue to focus your eyes and heart on the cross. We do this to remind ourselves Jesus' death for us draws us here to be served by Him and serve Him as members of His family, the church.) HYMN "Angels from the Realms of Glory" LW 50: 1, 2 Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight over all the earth; Once you sang creation s story; Now proclaim Messiah s birth: REFRAIN Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn king. Shepherds in the fields abiding, Watching over your flocks by night, God with us in now residing, Yonder shines the infant light. REFRAIN WE UNITE AS GOD S FAMILY AND IN HIS NAME The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their baptisms connecting them to Christ s forgiving sacrifice. 2
We begin our service in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Praise the Lord. I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart. He has caused His wonders to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and compassionate. He provided redemption for His people. Holy and awesome is His name. To Him belongs eternal praise. HYMN "Angels from the Realms of Glory" LW 50:5 All creation, join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son Evermore your voices raising To the eternal Three in One. Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn king. PRAYER We worship and praise Your name, O God, for You have provided redemption for Your people. To You belongs eternal praise. We confess that in You alone there is righteousness and strength. As You opened Simeon's eyes in the temple so he could recognize Your salvation, open our eyes so we can clearly see Christ today. In Him grant us peace in life and in death. Amen. CONFESSION AND WORD OF FORGIVENESS 3
In Psalm 111 the psalmist says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and that all who follow His precepts have good understanding. The truth is, however, that we have not faithfully followed the Lord's direction, His laws, and His will. We confess our sins and failures to live a wise life, for the Lord Himself has invited us to turn to Him and be saved. O Lord, I am in need of Your salvation. You deserve to be feared, held in awe, and respected. Yet I have ignored Your will and Your wisdom and have chosen for myself what path I should follow. Forgive my many sins. Save me, for You are God and there is no other. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" LW 49 Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn king; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled." Joyful, all you nations, rise; Join the triumph of the skies; With angelic hosts proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!" Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn king!" Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come, Offspring of a virgin s womb. Veiled I flesh the Godhead see! Hail, incarnate deity! 4
Pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel! Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn king!" Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace! Hail the sun of righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, Born that we no more may die, Born to raise each child of earth, Born to give us second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn king! PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Jesus, Prince of Peace, You are our Redeemer, our Righteousness, our Savior, our strength and our peace. Jesus, You are a light to all peoples. Enable us to reflect more and more of Your light that others would see You in us and through our witness come to know Your peace. Amen. KYRIE "GOD GIVES US THE GIFT OF HIS WORD" Gloria in Excelsis 5
SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know Your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow His steps in the way that leads to life eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. OLD TESTAMENT Exodus 13:1-3a, The Lord said to Moses, Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine. Then Moses said to the people, Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the Lord s. 6
Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. And when in time to come your son asks you, What does this mean? you shall say to him, By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem. All: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Arise, and shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. PSALM Psalm 111 Praise the Lord. I will extol the Lord with all my heart. Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them. The Lord is gracious and compassionate. Glorious and majestic are His deeds, and His righteousness endures forever. He has caused His wonders to be remembered. The Lord is gracious and compassionate. He provides food for those who fear Him; He remembers His covenant forever. He has shown His people the power of His works, giving them the lands of other nations. The Lord is gracious and compassionate. The works of His hands are faithful and just; all His precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast forever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness. The Lord is gracious and compassionate. He provided redemption for His people; He ordained His covenant forever--holy and awesome is His name. 7
The Lord is gracious and compassionate. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding. To Him belongs eternal praise. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Great are the works of the Lord! EPISTLE Colossians 3:12-17 Put on then, as God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. All: This is the Word of the Lord. Arise, and shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. (Please rise.) ALLELUIA AND VERSE 8
GOSPEL Luke 2:22-40 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord ) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel. And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts 9
from many hearts may be revealed. And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. All: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Arise, and shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. CHILDREN'S MESSAGE HYMN Let All Together Praise Our God LW 44:1-2 Let all together praise our God Before His glorious throne; Today He opens heav n again To give us His own Son, To give us His own Son. MESSAGE He undertakes a great exchange, Puts on our human frame, And in return gives us His realm, His glory, and His name, His glory, and His name. NICENE CREED (Our Convictions) I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, 10
maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father,by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scripturesand ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,I acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen Amen. RECEPTION OF OFFERINGS AND TITHES (WE WOULD LIKE GUESTS AND VISITORS TO KNOW WE DON'T EXPECT THEM TO CONTRIBUTE UNLESS THEY CHOOSE TO DO SO. 13 Lord God, keeper of promises, You have shown us Your salvation in the person of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem. We praise You for the peace You have given us in His coming. As Your Holy Spirit led Simeon into the temple courts, by that same Spirit move us to live, to act, and to speak in ways that will result in blessings in our lives and in the lives of others. Move us to cradle continuously the Christ Child in our hearts and to praise You for the peace and joy that is ours in Him. Teach us to forgive one another as You have forgiven us. May Your Word rule our hearts and minds; may it be the standard for all life in this and in all Your churches. Lord God, bless all pastors and bless all missionaries throughout the world that, through the Word they proclaim, people from all the ends of the earth may turn to You and be saved. May the lives of all pastors and missionaries be marked by integrity as they serve You. May every knee bow before You, confessing that in You alone there is righteousness and strength. Gracious and compassionate Lord, remember those who are in need of healing: the sick, the dying, the depressed, the lonely, the struggling, the oppressed and those who have lost loved ones especially... For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. CHRIST S WORDS OF CONSECRATION Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciplesand said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. In the same way also he took the cup after supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you! People Amen! AGNUS DEI LW pg. 172 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; 15
