OCTOBER 2017 MEDIA BREAK! ARE GUARDIAN ANGELS REAL? CLERGY APPRECIATION DAY ST. SIMON
Are Guardian Angels Real? Oct. 2 is the feast of the Guardian Angels What does a guardian angel really do? The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession (No. 336). One source reports that St. Augustine explained of angels, If we journey into another country, they follow us; go where we will by land or by sea, they are ever with us all day long and all night long, and during every moment of our life. Our guardian angels aren t assigned by God merely to protect us from physical harm or even death. Sometimes angels do protect us in that way. But, these invisible protectors are primarily concerned with keeping us on a path that leads to God. GUARDIAN ANGEL PRAYER Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God s love commits me here, Ever this day be at my side, To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen. THE GREAT CLOUD OF WITNESSES What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints? The communion of saints is the Church. ~ Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 946 ALL SAINTS DAY (NOV. 1) is a holy day of obligation and an opportunity to remember all saints and martyrs, known and unknown, throughout Christian history. Remembering and celebrating our saints has been a Christian tradition since the fourth century. ALL SOULS DAY (NOV. 2) commemorates all of the faithful departed our friends, relatives, parishioners and community members. We remember and pray for the souls of the people in purgatory and also pray that we may one day join Christ and all of the saints in heaven. Clothespin Angel Craft YOU WILL NEED: Clothespins Paper cupcake baking cups Small photo of your child Glue DIRECTIONS: Find a photograph of your child when they were a baby or toddler (small enough so their head is about the size of the top of the clothespin). Cut out and glue your child s head from the photograph onto the top of the clothespin. Cut the cupcake baking cup in half and glue each angel wing onto the back of the clothespin. Kids can color or decorate with glitter, markers, etc. Remind them how much you love your little angel! Images: Shutterstock
October Snapshots n THIS IS REAL LIFE All of the rosaries in our house belonged to women of faith. My husband, Cory, cherishes his mother s rosary. She passed away more than a dozen years ago, and Cory often talks about seeing his mom saying a silent rosary in the evenings or in times of stress. He also has his godmother s rosary it has green beads and a beautiful crucifix attached. And I was given his grandmother Clare s rosary after she passed away. It glows in the dark and made her feel safe at night after she was widowed. Like the beads themselves, saying the Rosary is a faith practice passed down from generation to generation. For a helpful how-to guide to the Rosary, be sure to tear out the poster on Pages 4-5 and place it in a place of prominence in your home. And don t miss Scott Warden s brilliantly honest take on praying the Rosary as a family on Page 7. May God bless your family in this month of the Rosary! SAINT OF THE MONTH ST. SIMON THE ZEALOT FIRST CENTURY St. Simon was one of Jesus Twelve Apostles, but virtually all we know about him comes from lists of the apostles (see Mt 10:2-4; Mk 3:16-18; Lk 6:14-16; Acts 1:13). It is Luke who calls him Zealot. The term Zealot may refer to his zeal in keeping the Law of Moses. He is said to have traveled with St. Jude through Egypt, present-day Iran and Lebanon, preaching the Gospel. Western tradition says he died a martyr. He shares the feast day of Oct. 28 with Jude. In his memory: Pray for all those Christians who are suffering persecution in the Middle East. Read Luke 6, Matthew 10, Mark 3 or Acts 1, the chapters of the New Testament in which he is mentioned. Visit his major shrine at the Vatican (see Vatican.com/tour for virtual 3-D tour). Prayer: St. Simon, you were as zealous in promoting faith in Jesus as you had been in living the Law of Moses. Help me to be as zealous in my faith and to be as willing to spread the Gospel as you were. Amen. 4 To say the Rosary include the following prayers: 1. Make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostles Creed. 2. Pray an Our Father. 3. Prayer three Hail Marys and one Glory Be. 4. Announce the mystery and pray the Our Father. 5. Pray ten Hail Marys and one Glory Be. 6. Pray the Hail, Holy Queen In this month of the Holy Rosary, set aside time to say the Rosary together as a family. This traditional, meditative prayer is a wonderful way to find calm before bedtime or to start your day. The Rosary is, at its heart, a biblical prayer, which is why Scripture verses are used for meditation with each mystery. 1
To download the prayers of the Rosary, visit osv.com. For one free copy of our pamphlet The Rosary for Children THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES (Mondays and Saturdays) THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES (Thursdays) THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES (Tuesdays and Fridays) THE GLORIOUS MYSTERIES (Wednesdays and Sundays) As we hold our rosary and pray the Hail Mary over and over again, we think about happy times in Mary s life. We call these the Joyful Mysteries. THE ANNUNCIATION: The angel Gabriel asks Mary to be the Mother of Jesus. THE VISITATION: Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth s baby (St. John the Baptist) recognizes Mary s baby (Jesus). Both babies are still in the womb! THE NATIVITY: Mary gives birth to Jesus in a manger. THE PRESENTATION: Mary and Joseph take Jesus to the Temple, and Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus as the Messiah. THE FINDING IN THE TEMPLE: Mary and Joseph fear Jesus is lost. They find him teaching in the Temple. As we pray the Hail Marys, we think about the public ministry of Jesus. We call these the Luminous Mysteries. Luminous means light. Light helps us to understand. THE BAPTISM OF JESUS: Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. THE WEDDING AT CANA: Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding celebration. THE PROCLAMATION OF THE KINGDOM: Jesus talks about putting God first in our lives. THE TRANSFIGURATION: Jesus takes Peter, James and John up on a mountain. He talks with Moses and Elijah. He is shining. THE GIVING OF THE EUCHARIST: Jesus gives us his Body and Blood for the first time at the Last Supper. As we pray the Hail Mary over and over again, we think about the very difficult times in Jesus life. We call these the Sorrowful Mysteries. THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN: Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, but his disciples fall asleep. THE SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR: Jesus is arrested and taken to the jail where the soldiers make fun of him and whip him. THE CROWNING OF THORNS: The soldiers take a thorny vine, wind it in circles and press it on Jesus head. THE CARRYING OF THE CROSS: Jesus is forced to carry the heavy wood of the cross. THE CRUCIFIXION: Jesus is nailed to the cross. As we pray the Hail Marys, we think about the wonderful times in Jesus life and in Mary s life after the Crucifixion. We call these the Glorious Mysteries. THE RESURRECTION: Jesus rises from the dead. THE ASCENSION: Jesus ascends to heaven after telling his disciples that he will be with them in Spirit forever. THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: The Holy Spirit comes as a wonderful gift from Jesus to teach our hearts and minds about God. THE ASSUMPTION: Mary is taken up into heaven, body and soul. THE CORONATION: God gives Mary a special place in heaven, crowning her Queen of Heaven and Earth. Images: Jim Shutterstock Olvera, Shutterstock OCTOBER 2017 TAKE OUT POSTER
Media Break: Building Social Skills in Today s Kids By Heidi Busse At every dinner party, playdate and night out we ve been on lately, our friends with kids end up asking the same question: What do you do about screen time? As varied and unique as families are these days, parents are increasingly facing the same dilemma. While we worry about friendships and grades, self-esteem and Catholic values, mostly we wonder how to raise and teach kids to talk to one another in full sentences (without emojis). If you have to remind your children to take off their headphones at the kitchen table or that talking to a friend does not mean texting back and forth while in the same room, then these ideas are for you. n GO OUT TO DINNER AND MAKE YOUR KIDS ORDER. When the waiter or waitress comes to our table, we encourage our kids to say their order loudly, with manners, while making eye contact with the server. This is insanely difficult for today s kids because it includes speaking to an adult, asking for what they want and doing so with gratitude and grace. It is a great way to teach that human interaction, especially with people who are serving us, is important. n CREATE REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES. We take media breaks in our house. We insist that for a set amount of time usually two to three hours everyone needs to do something without a screen. They can do crafts, go outside, take the dog for a walk or get so bored that they rediscover old toys. (Hello, Legos gathering dust on the dresser.) Other parents change their wifi password weekly or enforce rules that certain chores must be completed before allowing screen time. However this might work in your house, the goal is to raise children who have the skills to actively participate in real life. n PRACTICE IN THE CAR. When we re on our way to a family gathering such as a birthday party or a friends home for dinner, we talk with our kids in the car about what is expected of them socially even role playing. We ll say, What do you say when your aunt asks what grade you re going into in the fall? and What can you say to keep the conversation going? And we let them know that yes and no are not full sentences. Conversation is a two-way street and these skills are best learned through practice. 6 TAKE OUT OCTOBER 2017 n WALK THE WALK (OR TALK THE TALK). We ve heard it a million times: Kids pay attention to our behavior as much or more than they listen to our instructions. As parents, we need to put down our phones at the dinner table, turn off Netflix and model good conversation and social skills with one another. We can go back to ignoring each other after the kids are in bed. (J/K!) :) Images: Shutterstock
The Rosary is the most beautiful and the most rich in graces of all prayers; it is the prayer that touches most the Heart of the Mother of God and if you wish peace to reign in your homes, recite the family Rosary. Pope St. Pius X How I learned to stop worrying and love the Rosary By Scott Warden If the good pope is correct about the Rosary (he is), it is fitting that we celebrate the Church s most beautiful prayer during the calendar s most beautiful month. October leisurely holds hands with the warm days of summer and the cool nights of fall. It is evening walks that cast long shadows and sleeping peacefully under layers of blankets with the windows cracked. It is bonfires and pumpkin patches, apple cider and football season. October is God showing off. As beautiful as October is outside of our home, it is almost as peaceful inside. Just more than a month into the school year, my wife and I still are enrobed in a we ve got this confidence something that fades like daylight hours in winter. We haven t yet given up on checking backpacks nightly. We re filling out permission slips and reading logs (on time!). We re still a month or two away from when packing lunches becomes literally the worst thing in the world. Life in October wasn t always all caramel apples and lazy Sundays. Previously, like many Catholic families, at the start of the month we would commit ourselves to saying the Rosary every night with our brood of blessings (now ages 14, 12, 8, 2, and 6 months). Our intentions were as pure and perfect as the Blessed Mother herself. But as soon as we d make the first Sign of the Cross, Jacob, the 8-year-old, would move from the couch to the floor to avoid being climbed on by Dominic, the 2-year-old, who refused to be denied tormenting his brother. And a decade in, I would notice Grant, the 12-year-old, had completely zoned us all out and wasn t even pretending to pray. At every other Hail Mary, I would have to remind somebody to sit down, be quiet, pay attention. As the chaos escalated, so did my blood pressure. And because of their behavior and my yelling, our family Rosary was as peaceful as a three-ring circus. And so, as we paid special honor to Mary this past May, my wife suggested that if I calmed down, so would the boys. She reminded me that they re not little prayer robots. If they wanted to pray lying on the floor or sitting at the kitchen table or hanging upside down with their head hanging off of the couch, so be it; if they wanted to actively participate or not, fine. I let go of the notion that in order to foster a devotion to the Rosary in them they had to sit still with hands folded perfectly. In doing so, our family Rosaries became something that filled me with joy instead of anxiety, and it trickled down. The late Father Patrick Peyton, known as the Rosary Priest, once said, If families give Our Lady 15 minutes a day by reciting the Rosary, I assure them that their homes will become, by God s grace, peaceful places. 8 Faith Talk for Families 25 Years of the Catechism of the Catholic Church The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honor God and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into life in society. ~ Catechism of the Catholic Church, No How does your family celebrate God? How do you celebrate one another? What are your family s values? Do you talk about them? What do you think is a good use of freedom? n Oct. 1 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 21:28-32: Jesus tells a story. He wants the religious leaders to figure out which of the two sons did his father s will: the one who said yes but never showed up, or the one who said no but later repented and did what his father asked. Jesus was teaching that a life of holiness is both what we do as well as our attitude and intentions. Can you think of times when you ve seen people say one thing and do another? n Oct. 8 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 21:33-43: Using the image of a vineyard, Jesus tells a story (a parable) reminding us that we all have to care for God s kingdom. We are needed by God in this vineyard, as good workers, as good gardeners. Who has helped you live for God s kingdom? n Oct. 15 Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 22:1-14: Jesus tells a parable about a king inviting people to his son s wedding banquet. The invited guests refuse the invitation and reject the king s messengers, so the king invites people from the streets, both good and bad. This story tells us many things about God and about ourselves. Jesus once again reminds us of a crucial thing about the kingdom of God: all are generously invited. Images: Shutterstock ON THIS DAY WE CELEBRATE n Oct. 1: Down Syndrome Awareness Month begins Pray for children with Down syndrome. n Oct. 4: St. Francis of Assisi Feed the birds as the weather turns colder. n Oct. 5: St. Faustina Kowalska Pray the Divine Mercy prayer for grace. n Oct. 8: Clergy Appreciation Day Write a thank-you card to your parish priest. n Oct. 15: National Sunday School Teacher Appreciation Day Give a gift card to your children s religious education teacher. n Oct. 16: St. Gerard Majella Give a gift to an expectant mother on their patron s feast. In this story, why do you think the king wants good and bad people at his feast? n Oct. 22 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 22:15-21: Some people who didn t like Jesus tried to trick him by asking if God s people should obey Caesar s rules. Should they pay taxes to Caesar who is not a Christian ruler? Jesus tells the people that if they use Caesar s money, they need to pay for it. Most importantly, then, Jesus reminds them to give to God what belongs to God. Jesus asked for a coin to help him answer the question. Whose image was on it? Because of baptism, whose image is in us? n Oct. 29 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 22:34-40: A lawyer asked Jesus a question to see if he really knew the law: Which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus put the whole law into one commandment by saying we are to love God above all. But he added a second part: Love your neighbor as yourself. The people listening knew both commandments, but the two had never been made one before. n Oct. 28: St. Jude What impossible thing is troubling you? Entrust it to St. Jude. Do you have family rules/laws that help you to reach out and love others?
