THE E-PISTLE July Facebook: /holyspiritwaco UPDATE ON THE WACO DIAPER BANK To support Holy Spirit s ministry plan of identifying and supporting our parish s outreach the newsletter will begin a fairly regular column updating the parish on the particular ministries or organizations that our parishioners are involved in. This month Ellen Filgo tells us about the Waco Diaper Bank. - editor. The past winter and spring brought a lot of growth to the Waco Diaper Bank. Following our second annual December Diaper Drive (that brought in almost 8,000 diapers) and a great profile of the organization in the Waco Trib in early January, the Waco Diaper Bank experienced the following: Six diaper drives held by schools, churches, individuals and businesses over 10,000 diapers donated over 50 volunteer hours with a dozen new volunteers shelving donated to the storage facility plastic wrap donated for our packaging monetary donations from individuals and churches (including from the Daughters of the King s spring garage sale!) that will cover the rent on our storage facility until the end of 2017 A donation from Domtar Personal Care and First Book (a national organization focused on early childhood literacy) of 250 boxes containing 100 diapers and 3 board books that we are distributing to the Hillcrest Hospital Nurse-Family Partnership. A partnership with a local social media site for moms (Waco Moms Blog) to bring in diaper donations at a Moms Night Out Block Party. We are currently distributing diapers to Caritas (3000/month) and the Veterans OneStop (600/ month) and will be providing diapers for a summer event held by the Central Texas Divas in order to help get low-income children ready for fall school and daycare. We always need more diaper donations! We have several dropoff locations around town, but you can always drop off diapers with Shari in the church office. If you would like to organize a diaper drive with a group of others (whether that s a workplace, a civic organization or any other group that you are associated with) please contact wacodiaperbank@ gmail.com for more information on how to do this. More diapers means that we can expand our distribution program to a few other organizations that have contacted us for diapers over the last few months. I really appreciate Holy Spirit s support of the diaper bank and of me as I launched it. And I hope that you will support us as we grow as well. 2 FROM THE RECTOR AND, WE RE OFF! Happy July, and welcome to a new ministry year! The theme for this ministry year is Plant the seeds for the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church of Think of it. Over the last three years, we have been tilling the soil. This year, we get down to the business of planting. Under the main headings of our ministry plan, here are just some of the things we are doing to become and share Jesus good news this year. Identify and Support our Parish s Outreach. Many of you have already submitted your serving in the community forms, letting us know how God is already using you in our community. This September, we will hold a Month of Caring that will give us all opportunity to participate directly in these outreach initiatives. We will top off the month with a Celebration of Caring, timed to our Neighborhood Block Party. We will invite our outreach partners to join us to receive a blessing, set up a table, and share their information with us and our neighborhood. Keep Momentum on the Master Plan. A huge part of planting seeds is the upkeep and renovation of our building. We hope to hold a special ground-breaking event in September, a ribbon-cutting in May, and keep communications flowing through the whole process. Invite and Welcome our Next Congregation Well. Our summer schedule paves the way for future growth on Sunday morning. We are exploring expanding our 7:30 Morning Prayer service into its own primary service of worship, which sets the stage for the possibility of launching an 11:00 or 11:15 service in the Spring. We will continue to reach out to our neighbors with postcards, yard signs, and special invitations for people moving into the area. Pass the Torch to Our Next Congregation. We will host Discovery classes for newcomers and going-deeper discipleship classes ( School of Prayer and Spiritual Discernment ) for people who want deeper roots in their faith. There will also be training events throughout the year for lay ministries like acolytes, hospitality, Vestry, Altar Guild, and others. Walk Confidently into the Parish s Future. This year of planting seeds is an exercise in walking confidently into the future God has for Holy Spirit Episcopal Church. We are purposefully reaching out and empowering the ministry of our members, continuing our dogged focus on renovation, and inviting, welcoming, and connecting new members. We walk with hope into God s plans for us. There will be ways for you to be involved. If you feel a special tug in any direction, please let me know. We will send a special mailing to all members and attenders at the end of July, outlining the ministry budget, calendar, and ways to get involved. Thank you for joining in our shared ministry at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church. We are planting seeds, and we will return with joy, carrying God s harvest of souls. - Fr. Jason 2 Becoming and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ

MONTERROSO A native of Guatemala, the Rt. Rev. Hector Monterroso served as bishop of Costa Rica for 14 years before becoming an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Texas, July 1, His father s professional soccer career proved to be an opener for him in gathering people to a new worshiping community. My training in the seminary did not include how to [plant] new churches, he said, but with his inherited soccer skills, he soon made headway. People couldn t believe that a priest could play soccer. I visited many small towns where the people came to learn that I was the priest of the new church. Many young people came to the church to meet and to play on my soccer team. Eventually, we had our own soccer team sponsored by the Episcopal Church. It was good advertising, he laughed. In addition to his experience as a missionary, and as Bishop of Costa Rica, Bishop Monterroso also served as Secretary General of Province IX ( ); as editor of the Revista Anglicanos for 16 years, a magazine that served the Hispanic diaspora in the Anglican Communion; and as Secretary General of the Anglican Church of the Central Region Cont. on pg. 5 BIRTHDAYS Richard Friedli 7/2 Chris Rardin 7/3 LaTrisha Spain 7/4 Fred Ellis 7/6 Korbyn Golden 7/6 Blake Holdridge 7/6 Caren Phillips 7/7 Susan Martin 7/8 Yvette Hephner 7/9 Pam Ritch 7/9 Lorain Brown 7/10 Steve Canuteson 7/10 Brendan Payne 7/10 Jo Himes 7/11 Mike Wilkins 7/13 Bill Milnor 7/15 Karen O Bric 7/19 Melody Watson 7/19 Jan Attaway 7/21 Al Ritch 7/25 Janet Schaffer 7/25 French Baker 7/28 Koby Gidney 7/28 Mary Gresham 7/28 Kyle Roberts 7/3o ANNIVERSARIES Suzanne & Baltazar Acevedo 7/1 Rosanne & Hayes Fuller 7/2 Liz & Josh Ward 7/2 Judy & Bill Bauer 7/6 Misty & Rich Guy 7/11 Barbara & Thomas Burr 7/12 Lisa & Richard Friedli 7/19 Kelley & Jeremiah Gipson 7/21 Beverly & Steve Fallon 7/22 Karen & Rusty Reynolds 7/27 Megan & Cameron Talley 7/28 Elisabeth & Jeremy Uecker 7/31 Penny & Eric Vlam 7/31 w w w. h o l y s p i r i t w a c o. c o m 3

PARISH LIFE PASTORAL CARE & SHUT-IN MINISTRY Have you ever noticed that when you are reading devotionals, that they hit you head on? I was reading from my new devotional book on rest the other day. I had spent the day before complaining about one thing or another in my head. Why are we doing things this way, why are things changing so much? I seem to do that a lot these days. Sometimes it s not in my head but out loud to someone, especially to my granddaughter since she s the only one that seems to pay attention to me. Well, when I read the devotional for the next morning, it was about complaining. I had to laugh because it hit me so hard. Then later on when I was looking for it again on that date I couldn t find it. I had read the wrong date. That impressed me so that I had to read it to my Mission Committee and, of course my granddaughter. I have a lot of devotional books, as some of you know. Of course my very favorite is the one I am constantly quoting in here is Sarah Young s Jesus Lives. I give it to my friends and I sent one to college with my granddaughter. She said it got her through her first year when she had so many anxieties. Now my daughter and grandson had me order one for them. Every time my granddaughter reads through mine she is amazed at how I have starred and highlighted so much of it. It is a truly amazing book. It has a page for nearly anything you are worried about. Our ministry is so important to our members. We love the people we keep up with. We don t do it out of responsibility, we do it out of love. It is the most important and fulfilling thing I have ever done and I think the others feel the same way. We get very close to our people. If you want something to do for our church family, that will truly change you for the better, join us. We meet at 10 am the first Friday of the month. Talk to me at church, or call me and I will remind you. - Mary Gresham DAUGHTERS OF THE KING We are not meeting for the summer, but we had a very nice lunch at Café Cappuccino to end our year. We will be meeting again in September. Hope to have new members by then. - Mary Gresham SCENES FROM CHILDREN S CHAPEL 4 Becoming and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ

STAFF SPOTLIGHT GET TO KNOW SHARI PAULEY Editor s Note: We are going to start a new occasional series, introducing the staff of Holy Spirit. This month, get to know Shari Pauley, parish administrator. What is your faith journey? I attended Sunday School at a young age and was baptized in the Methodist Church. I don t remember when we quit attending church regularly but I know it happened. I have attended church periodically, but not with any regularity. Who has been a spiritual hero in your life? I think my brother and sisterin-law. They have raised two great boys who have faith that is amazing; they are so giving of their time and talent. What are your specific duties on staff at Holy Spirit? As the Parish Administrator my plate is full. I am responsible for service bulletins, entering the weekly donations, and paying our vendors. I order supplies and items requested by ministries. I greet all who visit throughout the day, including our service repair technicians. I help Holy Spirit ministries as needed. It is also my responsibility to publish the New and Notable every week. And we can t forget, other duties as assigned! What excites you about your job at Holy Spirit? It is never dull or boring and that is a good thing! You never know what the day might bring. What is the silliest/craziest/ strangest/most unexpected thing you ve found yourself doing as a part of your job? I am not sure that has happened yet, but as they say be careful what you ask for What is one of your favorite memories from your time at Holy Spirit? Being here for the Installation of Fr. Jason and helping him start his journey here at Holy Spirit. If time and money were not factors, what would a week vacation look like to you? A week at the beach where I can relax and unwind, and perhaps spend a day at the spa. When you re not working, what do you like to do for fun? I love to read and spend time with friends and of course watching college football! I would love to someday visit Italy and Germany. New bishop, cont. from pg. 3 of America. During his tenure in Costa Rica, he secured its financial stability, increased the number of clergy from seven to 29, assured that most congregations were self-sustaining, and gained governmental recognition and support for many of the Diocese s programs. In Texas, Bishop Monterroso will continue to strengthen the growth in both Hispanic congregations as well as new missional communities and church plants. He will visit 45 congregations during the year; primarily in the southern region of the Diocese of Texas; chair the board of St. Vincent s House, a social service agency in Galveston; support growth of multicultural presence in all congregations and help to create a strategy for new ethnic church plants and missional communities. Additionally, Bishop Monterroso will work to identify vocational leaders within the Hispanic congregations. Bishop Monterroso earned an engineering degree and attended seminary at night while working for a rum company. He was ordained as a deacon in 1986, a priest in 1987 in the Diocese of Guatemala and consecrated as the Bishop of Costa Rica on June 7, He and his wife, Sandra Cardona, have two grown children: María Beatriz, a medical doctor in Costa Rica, and Héctor Ramón, a civil engineer. - reprinted from epicenter.org w w w. h o l y s p i r i t w a c o. c o m 5

WORSHIP FROM THE ALTAR GUILD In the early days of the Church the duty of caring for the Altar and Sanctuary was the concern of the priests and attendants according to Dorothy C. Diggs, A Working Manual for Altar Guilds. Nuns do this work in certain parts of the world, but for some years, in most churches, these duties have been performed by a specially chosen group of women known as the Altar Guild. It is not known just then the transition from priests and helpers took place. As Altar Guild work is basically a housekeeping service, it probably developed when the clergy became too busy spreading the Good News to continue it. As a precedent, we are told that in our Lord s time faithful women ministered to Him. It is certain that He elevated the position of women to a dignity they had not known before. It can be said, therefore, that members of the Altar Guild are part of an unbroken tradition reaching back to the faithful, men or women, young or old, who provided for Jesus during his life on earth. Although there are many women of the Bible from which to choose St. Monica, St. Agatha, St. Anne and Mary Magdalene we chose St. Martha of Bethany as our patron saint for her practical life of service and because she was among the first to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Martha, like other matrona, supervised activities in the house, protected and distributed the household supplies, and was the guardian of its laws. In order to commemorate this matron of the house who and to recognize Altar Guild members we will participate in Blessing of the Hands on Sunday, July Norma Thronburg JULY SCIPTURE & PRAYERS July 2 First lesson: Jeremiah 28:5-9 Psalm: Psalm 89:1-4, Second Lesson: Romans 6:12-23 Gospel: Matthew 10:40-42 Diocesan cycle: Christ Church, San Augustine; Christ Church, Tyler; St. Cyprian s, Lufkin Anglican cycle: Ogori-Magongo - (Lokoja, Nigeria) July 9 First lesson: Zechariah 9:9-12 Psalm: Psalm 145:8-15 Second Lesson: Romans 7:15-25a Gospel: Matthew 11:16-19, Diocesan cycle: St. Francis, Tyler; St. John s; St. John s, Center Anglican cycle: Okinawa - (Japan) July 16 First lesson: Isaiah 55:10-13 Psalm: Psalm 65: 9-14 Second Lesson: Romans 8:1-11 Gospel: Matthew 13:1-9, Diocesan cycle: St. John s, Tyler; St. Luke s, Lindale; St. Matthew s, Henderson Anglican cycle: Ontario - (Canada) July 23 First lesson: Isaiah 44:6-8 Psalm: Psalm 86:11-17 Second Lesson: Romans 8:12-25 Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30, Diocesan cycle: St. Michael & All Angels, Longview; St. Paul s, Kilgore; St. Paul s, Leigh Anglican cycle: Osun North East - (Ibadan, Nigeria) July 30 First lesson: 1 Kings 3:5-12 Psalm: Psalm 119: Second Lesson: Romans 8:26-39 Gospel: Matthew 13:31-33, Diocesan cycle: St. Philip s, Palestine; Trinity, Jacksonville; Trinity, Longview; Trinity, Marshall Anglican cycle: Pennsylvania and Pittsburg (TEC) Find the readings at: 6 Becoming and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ

ADULT CHRISTIAN FORMATION LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FALL Sisters and brothers, I m happy to let you know what s happening with Adult Christian Formation here at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church. With changing service times and a continuing Capital Campaign, our parish is going through a time of significant transition. Both the break from Adult Ed classes for the summer and the Fall series on Exodus emphasize that we are a people on the move, walking with God in faith and trusting Him to lead us through the wilderness of uncertainty to the Promised Land. During this Summer of Simplicity, we re going Back to Basics, focusing on the core Christian disciplines of worship, Eucharist, and prayer, so there are no official Adult Ed courses offered until August. Then, starting on August 20, we are back with our Fall study on Exodus led by Preston Yancey. Preston will take UPDATE ON THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS Recap of what s been accomplished so far: 1. Survey of entire property (required by City; needed to resolve drainage problems) 2. Asbestos Survey (required by State for all commercial construction/renovation projects) 3. Geotechnical Survey (required to assess soil for structural stability-new narthex construction) 4. Selection of company to perform asbestos abatement when construction documents are completed 5. Approve design for renovated restrooms adjoining Narthex 6. Complete plan to divert water from rear of Parish Hall/Kitchen/Office and rebuild rear parking lot (surface to be concrete) 7. Complete plan to seal, recoat and restripe front parking lot, and improve lighting 8. Granted preliminary approval of Civil Engineering Plan from City of Waco 9. Approve plan to reconstruct entry walkway as a continuous gradual ramp from the parking lot to us through the familiar story of Israel s deliverance from slavery to the story of God leading His people through the wilderness, but always He is present with them. For Wednesday nights starting again in August, we will launch into a study of Romans for the Fall with our beloved N.T. Wright study guides. Romans is a great survey text touching on many foundational beliefs of our faith, a text whose riches are never exhausted no matter how much we mine for them. After Eucharist at 6 pm, will have dinner at 6:30 and the study at 7 in the Parish Hall. May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen! RENEWING THE SPIRIT the front door - Brendan Payne 10. Approve preliminary plan for creating a fire exit (required by City code) through the rear hallway between the library and the office 11. 8 ANGLICAN COMMUNION NEWS AUSTIN PRIEST AWARDED ECF GRANT TO EXPAND VETERANS MINISTRY The Rev. David Peters, associate rector at St. Mark s, Austin is one of five 2017 Fellows named recently by the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF). Others include: Jennifer Adams-Massmann, Stewart Clem, Ashley Graham-Wilcox and Renee McKenzie-Hayward. Peters will now be able to share his work with veterans across the Church with funding from the fellowship. Other Fellows programs address the value of truth-telling in an age of fake news, developing an understanding of congregational life through the lens of trauma, strengthening veterans ministries, researching the role of women in ecumenical history, and expanding key Episcopal institutions access to and interest in a more diverse Church. I wrote the grant so I could travel to parishes that have a limited budget to bring people in to speak, Peters said, adding, This fellowship will expand veterans ministry in churches across the country and I ll be setting up a travel schedule in August. I m thankful that this missional ministry that started here in the Diocese of Texas will be shared with the wider Church. Peters enlisted in the Marine Corps in his teens, finished college and seminary, and went to work as a youth minister in a suburban church in Pennsylvania. Shortly after 9/11 and the U.S. invasion of Iraq, he volunteered to serve as an Army chaplain and deployed to Iraq in After Iraq, Peters served in the the amputee and psych wards of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. These experiences in war and the trials of homecoming led him to start the Episcopal Veterans Fellowship in the Diocese of Texas in The EVF equips the Church for ministry to veterans with moral injury and the spiritual and theological affects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The ECF grant will enable Peters to travel across the Church to nurture existing veterans ministries and coach parishes and dioceses as they start new ones. Peters is a graduate of Seminary of the Southwest and the author of two books on war and reconciliation. His most recent is Post-Traumatic God, published by Church Publishing in An engaging preacher, his 9/11 sermon, Learning War and Reconciliation, won the Reconciliation Preaching Prize from Trinity, Wall Street in The Fellowship Partners Program embodies ECF s vision for the future of the Church, fostering theological formation and ministerial leadership, while supporting innovative scholars and leaders as they bring their passionate vision to life, said ECF President Donald Romanik. If you would like David to come to your parish or diocese to share the work of EVF, please contact him at runnermonk@gmail.com - reprinted from epicenter.org CHURCH OF ENGLAND PARISH AT HEART OF RELIEF EFFORTS FOLLOWING LONDON INFERNO In the hours since a massive blaze ripped through a tower block in west London early on Wednesday, nearby St Clement s Church has been rapidly turned into an emergency relief centre. It sheltered more than 100 residents as the blaze raged and has subsequently been overwhelmed with donations. People have given clothes, bedding and toiletries for the residents of the tower, many of whom fled the block in their nightwear and have lost everything. Volunteers from churches throughout the area are running the relief operation. Revd Alan Everett described how events unfolded in the hours after the devastating blaze: I opened the church at half three in the morning and within minutes the local community started bringing in supplies the tables are now completely overflowing. The response has been overwhelming he said. St Clement s has now reached saturation point and has simply run out of room to store any more supplies. Revd Alan says St Clement s has always had a strong emphasis on community outreach work and this tragic event has brought 8 Becoming and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ

people together in a very strong bond: Because of this church s longstanding community outreach work, it is a highly trusted place. We are trusted by people of all faiths. This response is the social gospel. In the wake of the tragedy people might ask where is God? God is present in the hands that are reaching out to help. Area Dean, Revd Mark O Donoghue, has been at St Clement s since dawn yesterday: I have spent the time sitting with and listening to people who are desperately looking for friends and relatives. This is a church showing Christ like compassion and care. Revd James Heard from a neighbouring parish has been spending time in prayer with those in distress: I was here most of yesterday. People have been coming in too shocked to speak. Designated spaces have been created within the church grounds for prayer and clergy from throughout the area have come to offer support to grieving relatives. St Clement s is providing registration for missing persons. It s a highly multicultural area with many nationalities represented; there s a high population of Moroccans, Filipinos and Eastern Europeans as well as many people from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia. The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said the response from the community had been an extraordinary sight. Local Bishop, Graham Tomlin, says it s crucial the clergy are visible: It s important to open the doors of our churches and of our hearts and to offer whatever help we can. This church is at the heart of the local community and we have here with us families anxiously awaiting news of relatives. There s an Ethiopian family here who can t find their five year old son. Our local Filipino Chaplain is also very involved as there are a number of Filipinos in the tower block missing. St Clement s is a four minute walk from the tower block - reprinted from the Anglican News Service NEW CANONS INSTALLED IN JERUSALEM DURING ANGLICAN PILGRIMAGE TO HOLY LAND The Archbishop in Jerusalem and the Middle East, Suheil Dawani, has installed four new Canons at St George s Cathedral in Jerusalem during an international Anglican pilgrimage. The Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon and the Archbishop of Hong Kong and Chairman of the Anglican Consultative Council, Paul Kwong, became Episcopal Canons; the Bishop of Texas, Andrew Doyle was installed as an Honorary Episcopal Canon and the Provincial Secretary of Hong Kong, Peter Koon became an Honorary Canon. The new Canons celebrated Evensong at the Cathedral in the company of clergy from not only the diocese, but from around the Communion - including New Zealand, the USA, Ghana, Liberia, South Africa, Canada, Burundi and the West Indies. His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III and Archbishop Aristarchus of Constantine were also present. Archbishop Paul Kwong said: This is a very tangible expression of Hong Kong s relations with THE mother church of Jerusalem, the cradle of Christianity. For as long as I remember, Good Friday service collection from every parish of the Hong Kong Province has been dedicated to support the Anglican mission in Jerusalem. This installation cements our friendship, co-operation and work together. We have much to give, share, and further in our joint witness to Christ. I congratulate Archbishop Suheil on becoming the Primate of Jerusalem & the Middle East. As a fellow primate, I look very much forward to building on our friendship, to walk together, to work side by side and in doing more for the Communion. The four newly appointed Canons are participating in a pilgrimage to the Holy Land being led by Archbishop Josiah Idowu- Fearon; the group includes five Primates, five members of the Anglican Consultative Council, five Provincial Secretaries, five members of the Compass Rose Society and five Friends of the Anglican Communion. - reprinted from the Anglican News Service w w w. h o l y s p i r i t w a c o. c o m 9
