Course Description This course provides students with an opportunity to explore Haddon Robinson s paradigm for preaching through a weekly discussion of his writings on homiletics. II. Course Relationship to the Curriculum Building on PR 601 and PR 602, this course is an elective that gives students an opportunity to discuss and learn more about Haddon Robinson s theory, method and practice of preaching. III. Course Objectives As a result of taking this course, students should be able to: Articulate Robinson s approach to homiletics based on his definition of expository preaching. Construct a preaching calendar including the idea and the title for each series and for individual sermons. Hand in your calendar on November 14 th. Evaluate five of Robinson s sermons by interacting with questions on page two of syllabus (ThM students only). Read the Big Idea Manual and complete all of the exercises. 1
2 Analyze the congregation at the church you currently attend (or your home church). Hand in an Audience Analysis Report. IV. Course Textbooks Haddon W. Robinson and Craig Brian Larson, The Art and Craft of Biblical Preaching (Zondervan). Scott M. Gibson, ed., Making a Difference in Preaching (Baker). Scott M. Gibson, ed., Preaching to a Shifting Culture (Baker). Keith Willhite and Scott M. Gibson, eds., The Big Idea of Biblical Preaching (Baker). Alice Mathews, Preaching that Speaks to Women (Baker). Robert Permenter, A Student Manual for the Book Biblical Preaching. Warren Wiersbe, Preaching and Teaching with Imagination (Baker). Other required reading may be provided each week by the professors. V. Course Requirements and Grading 1. Attendance. Attendance at all class sessions is required. Students are expected to be on time. If you cannot attend a session, or if you miss one because of emergency, please talk to either Dr. Robinson or Dr. Batten. 2. Discussion. Due to this seminar format, students are expected to participate in all class discussions; class participation will be included in the final grade. 3. Read the books and materials assigned. 4. Construct a preaching calendar (one year) including the date, series title, passage and subject. Hand in your calendar on November 14 th. 5. Analyze the congregation at your home church or the church you are currently attending. In your report, summarize the demographics of your audience: age, gender, race, nationality, educational level, socio-economic standing, political leanings, special interests, etc. Describe the spiritual condition of your audience. Hand in an Audience Analysis report on September 26 th. Your report should be no more than two pages double-spaced. 2
3 6. Read the Student Manual (by Robert Permenter) and complete all exercises in the workbook. Be prepared to discuss the difficulties in determining a central idea. Bring the completed workbook to class on October 3 rd. 7. For those Th.M. students taking this course as a 900-level course, you will view/listen to five Robinson sermons, and critique the sermons by writing a short paper for each one (4-5 pages, 12 pt. font, typed, double spaced, using 1 inch margins). Answer the following questions: 1) What is the homiletical idea? 2) What worked well in the sermon? 3) What worked for and against the preacher? 4) What did you learn from the sermon that you will apply to your preaching? 8. Assignments will be awarded the following percentages with regard to the final grade: 1) Reading 10% 2) Student Manual 20% 3) Audience Analysis Report 10% 4) Class Participation 40% 5) Preaching Calendar 20% Course Schedule We want to engage in genuine conversation. Your questions and your observations are crucial to our times together. The reading gives you some input for our discussions. The agenda items are here to get us started and to keep us focused.
