1 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Glory Everlasting November 17 & 18, 2018 AS WE GATHER As the Church Year is approaching its close, we turn our focus to the last things. The very last thing that we confess in the Apostles Creed is that we believe in the life everlasting. In Revelation, John describes the heavenly city of God and tells us that the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. Brilliant brightness has always been associated with the seeing of God, from the time when Moses had to veil his face because it reflected the dazzling presence of the almighty Lord. As we come into His presence for worship, we have a partial sense of that glory as we await that time beyond time, when we shall experience it fully in the life everlasting in His heavenly kingdom. 10:30 BELL CHOIR Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart WELCOME Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, People: for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION We confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. People: Merciful Father, with heartfelt repentance we confess our sin. We are sinful from birth and daily sin in thought, word, and deed. Our actions have been unkind and often have resulted in evil. Our words have been hurtful, and we have not always honored your name in our speaking. We have left undone many things that could have brought glory and praise to you. We do not remain focused on looking with eager expectation to your return in glory and have become taken in by the fleeting pleasures of this world. O Lord, grant us your grace and the blessing of forgiveness. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, lead us to amend our sinful lives, that we grow daily in righteousness and be bringers of peace in our time. Because of the great sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, on the cross of Calvary, God promises full and free forgiveness. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. As you believe, so may it be. 2

(Be seated) 3 Lord Jesus, you have promised that at the end of time you will appear in glory to gather your people to you. Keep us firm and steadfast even in the face of hardships, challenges, and disappointments in this world that we never lose the hope in Christ that will sustain us until your return as judge on the Last Day; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit are worshiped and glorified, now and eternally. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Daniel 12:1 3 (Those who are named in the Book of Life will be delivered.) At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Hebrews 10:11 25 (The Lord will not remember the sins of the faithful anymore.) And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds, then he adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings! And Jesus said to him, Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down. And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished? And Jesus began to say to them, See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, I am he! and they will lead many astray. And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains. But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ. But all who live will in that hours, By God s almighty, boundless pow r, Be changed at His commanding. The books are opened then to all, A record truly telling What each has done, both great and small, When he on earth was dwelling, And ev ry heart be clearly seen, And all be known as they have been In thoughts and words and actions. Then woe to those who scorned the Lord And sought but carnal pleasures, Who here despised His precious Word And loved their earthly treasures! With shame and trembling they will stand And at the judge s stern command To Satan be delivered. My Savior paid the debt I owe And for my sin was smitten; Within the Book of Life I know My name has now been written. I will not doubt, for I am free, And Satan cannot threaten me; There is no condemnation! May Christ our intercessor be And through His blood and merit Read from His book that we are free With all who life inherit. SERMON Stand Firm CATECHISM The Second Article In his What does this mean? reflecting on the Second Article of the Apostles Creed, Martin Luther reminds us that our final and eternal calling is to live under our Lord in His kingdom and serve Him as we share in the glory of heaven. Let us joyfully confess the article that tells of our redemption. 6

4 People: And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? People: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. (Rise) PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Holy Father, in the midst of things that only seem stable, your Son warns us to be prepared for great unrest. Wherever chaos erupts, send your people forth with the joyful message of what cannot be shaken or destroyed: the great love you have revealed for us in our Savior s death and resurrection. Lord, in your mercy, Loving and gracious Father, we commend to you the care of your Church throughout the world. Open the hearts of your people to 7 welcome that proclamation and share in the work of spreading your Good News. Raise up new servants for your Church, and guard and protect all missionaries, keeping them steadfast by your Word, and for Jack Burkee as he considers his call to serve as principal at St. Paul s. Lord, in your mercy, King of the nations, look in mercy on our country, our Congress and president, our judges and magistrates, and all those entrusted with civil authority among us. Make them a blessing and take from them arrogance and self-interest. Fill them with wisdom, courage and integrity. Lord, in your mercy, Gracious Lord, we thank you for the gift of life especially for the Osell s celebrating Rachel s 19 th birthday. Lord in your mercy, Holy One, the blood of your Son gives us confidence to come before you with true hearts in the full assurance of faith. Hear us now as we offer our petitions before you for all who are in difficult and trying times, for those who are in prison, for the sick and especially Dorothy, Larry, Marge, Dolores, Bob, Herb, Cindy, Scott, LuEva, Dick, Nancy, Jan, Shirley, Gladys, Russ, Arlene, John, Arlene, Jack, Shirley, Jonathan, Leonard and Sarah. Be also with those who mourn, the lonely and homebound. Grant them healing and comfort, according to your gracious will. Lord, in your mercy, Kind Father, your Son revealed Himself to be the Good Shepherd who goes in search of the lost and straying. Keep us all under His protection, that we may not neglect to meet together, but gathering attentively around His Word and His Supper. Grant us to be encouraged and to encourage each other. Send us out to call back all who have erred and strayed from His ways. Lord, in your mercy, 8 Author and Giver of all good things, as we come to your Son s table and feast together upon the body and blood that purchased the redemption of the world, prepare our hearts and minds to welcome with thanksgiving His new and eternal covenant, that we might ever

5 enjoy the forgiveness of sins and look forward to the day of the Savior s return. Lord, in your mercy, O God, Fountain of life and immortality, to you we give thanks and praise for all who have fallen asleep in Christ and await the joyful resurrection. Especially remembering Jean Fortner who lovingly remembers her parents, grandparents and her aunt and uncle on their anniversary on November 17 th. Grant that we may also be wise, turning many to righteousness, that on the day of Christ s appearing we may shine like stars forever in the brightness of His eternal glory. Lord, in your mercy, Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Keep us steadfast throughout our sojourn on earth, and bring us at last to the glory of your kingdom, where perfect joy abounds eternally.
