THE HOLY TRINITY Lord and Messiah June 7-11, 2017 AS WE GATHER Today the Church celebrates Trinity Sunday. It is a day to bask in the wonder of knowing the triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who has been revealed to us in the Scriptures. While we often think about the three persons of the Trinity having their own areas of expertise (the Father creates, the Son redeems, the Spirit sanctifies), the Readings for today focus on how the three persons of the Trinity work together in every task. In the Old Testament Reading from Genesis, we see all three persons are present and active in the creation of the world. In our Reading from Acts, we see all three persons active in the salvation of the world. And in the Holy Gospel from Matthew, we see that all three persons are active in the new life we have as baptized children of God. WELCOME May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13) HANDSHAKES & HUGS OPENING HYMN #507 PREPARATION Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow r, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! 1 INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. People: Through His Word, God said, Let there be light, and there was light. Pastor: The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. People: And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Pastor: Creation begins with the presence and activity of all three persons of the Trinity. People: Our lives as Christians begin in Baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Pastor: We are gathered to worship and glorify the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. People: The Trinity acts together to begin creation, to begin our Christian lives, and to begin our worship today. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: Despite the perfect creation by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we all have fallen into sin and failed to live as holy and perfect creatures. Let us confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. People: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens! Yet we have failed to proclaim your majestic name in our communities. We have denied your glory and sought our own glory. We see your mighty works, wonders, and signs every day, but we often fail to find delight in them. Forgive us for the sake of Jesus. Lead us by your Spirit. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for your sins. Jesus Christ was crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men, but God raised Him up, loosing the chains of death. God has given all authority in heaven and on earth to Jesus, who is both Lord and Christ. He has sent the Holy Spirit, who has called, gathered, and kept you in the one true faith of your Baptism. As a called and ordained servant of Jesus Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We are forgiven. The Holy Trinity works together to accomplish our forgiveness and salvation. 2
HYMN OF PRAISE #803 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Joyful, joyful we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love! Hearts unfold like flow rs before Thee, Praising Thee, their sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the gloom of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heav n reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow ry meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird, and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Well-spring of the joy of living, Ocean-depth of happy rest! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Fountainhead of love divine: Joyful, we Thy heav n inherit! Joyful, we by grace are Thine! SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith and to worship the Unity in the power of the Divine Majesty. Keep us steadfast in this faith and defend us from all adversities; for you, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 1:1 2:4a (Our triune God creates the heavens and the earth.) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-- the first day. And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning-- the second day. And 3 God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning-- the third day. And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. God made two great lights-- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning-- the fourth day. And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." And there was evening, and there was morning-- the fifth day. And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-- everything that has the breath of life in it-- I give every green plant for food." And it was so. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning-- the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished 4
the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. SECOND READING Acts 2:14a, (Peter s Pentecost sermon focuses on Jesus as both Lord and Christ.) Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 28:16 20 (Jesus sends His disciples to make disciples by teaching and baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.) Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." CHILDREN S MESSAGE 5 SERMON HYMN #905 Come Thou Almighty King Rise last stanza Come, Thou Almighty King, Help us Thy name to sing; Help us to praise; Father all glorious, O er all victorious, Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Heavenly Father, all authority in heaven and on earth comes from you. Provide your holy instruction and wisdom to all those elected to public office, including senators and representatives, judges and magistrates, Governor Walker, and President Trump. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Lord Jesus Christ, as the Father sent you, so you send your disciples. Raise up pastors and missionaries to bring your saving Gospel to the 6
ends of the earth, so that all may know you are both Lord and Messiah. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Holy Spirit, you are our guide. Help all people to live out their vocations with discernment and faithfulness. Today we especially remember musicians and marketers, parents and children, cashiers and construction workers, husbands and wives, writers and researchers. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Heavenly Father, you preserve creation with continual care, yet have entrusted us to be stewards of creation. Lead us to make wise choices that reflect your love and care for all creatures. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Lord Jesus Christ, you are our great physician. Bring healing and comfort to those who are suffering from mental illnesses, physical disabilities, stress, and every disease. Today we ask your prayers for Gladys, Pat, Barb, Herb, Cliff, Doris, Carol, Ervin, Matthew, Arlene, Mae, Jack, Linda, Dorothy, John, Arlene, LuEva, Daniel, Kathleen, Jean, Russ, Helen, Leonard, Shirley and Sarah. Restore them to health, if it be your will. Grant them grace to endure their sufferings until you heal them in this life or the next. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Holy Spirit, you are our comforter. Be with those who mourn the deaths of loved ones, especially Phil and family mourning the death of Barbara. Bring them the comfort and consolation only you can give. Point them to the hope of the promised resurrection, which we see fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Heavenly Father, on the sixth day you proclaimed your creation was very good. Though creation has fallen into sin, you still provide many moments of wonder and goodness. We praise and thank you today for all that you have given us. Bring us all into your joy and peace. Lord, in your mercy, 7 Pastor: Lord Jesus Christ, you revealed the mystery of the Trinity as you sent your disciples to teach your Word and baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Support us as we share with others the story of salvation accomplished by our triune God. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Holy Spirit, you are our counselor. Help us in a world full of division to bring unity and peace to our homes and schools, our workplaces and communities, our country and throughout the world. Lord, in your mercy, Pastor: Into your hands, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we entrust all for whom we pray, knowing that you work together to deliver and defend us. THE LORD S PRAYER THE WORDS OF OUR LORD SACRAMENT THE PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI Page 198 O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen. DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. 8
HYMN #940 Holy God, We Praise Thy Name Holy God, we praise Thy name; Lord of all, we bow before Thee. All on earth Thy scepter claim, All in heav n above adore Thee. Infinite Thy vast domain, Everlasting is Thy reign. Hark! The glad celestial hymn Angel choirs above are raising; Cherubim and seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising, Fill the heavn s with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord! Lo, the apostles holy train Join Thy sacred name to hallow; Prophets swell the glad refrain, And the whiterobed martyrs follow, And from morn to set of sun Through the Church the song goes on. Thou art King of Glory, Christ; Son of God, yet born of Mary. For us sinners sacrificed, As to death a Tributary, First to break the bars of death, Thou hast opened heav n to faith. Holy Father, holy Son, Holy Spirit, three we name Thee; Though in essence only one, Undivided God we claim Thee And, adoring, bend the knee While we own the mystery. 9 HYMN #628 Your Table I Approach Your table I approach; Dear Savior, hear my prayer. Let not an unrepentant heart Prove hurtful to me there. Lord, I confess my sins And mourn their wretched bands; a contrite heart is sure to find Forgiveness at Your hands. Your body and Your blood, Once slain and shed for me, Are taken at Your table, Lord, In blest reality. Search not how this takes place, This wondrous mystery; God can accomplish vastly more Than what we think could be. O grant, most blessed Lord, That earth and hell combined May not about this sacrament Raise doubt within my mind. Oh, may I never fail To thank You day and night For Your true body and true blood, O God, my peace and light. HYMN #627 Jesus, Christ, Our Blessed Savior Jesus Christ, our blessed Savior, Turned away God s wrath forever; By His bitter grief and woe He saved us from the evil foe. As His pledge of love undying, He, this precious food supplying, Gives His body with the bread, And with the wine the blood He shed. Jesus here Himself is sharing; Heed then how you are preparing, For if you do not believe, His judgment then you shall receive. Praise the Father, who from heaven To His own this food has given, Who, to mend what we have done, Gave into death His only Son. Firmly hold with faith unshaken That this food is to be taken By the sick who are distressed, By hearts that long for peace and rest. Agony and bitter labor Were the cost of God s high favor; Do not come if you suppose You need not Him who died and rose. Christ says: Come, all you that labor, And receive My grace and favor: Those who feel no pain or ill Need no physician s help or skill. For what purpose was My dying If not for your justifying? And what use this precious food If you yourself were pure and good? If your heart this truth professes And your mouth your sin confesses, You will be your Savior s guest, Be at His banquet truly blest. Let this food your faith so nourish That its fruit of love may flourish And your neighbor learn from you How much God s wondrous love can do. COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: We give thanks to you, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore you that of your mercy you would strengthen us through the same in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 10
BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. CLOSING HYMN #721 Lead Me, Guide Me Refrain: Lead me, guide me, along the way; For if You lead me, I cannot stray. Lord, let me walk each day with Thee. Lead me, O Lord, lead me. I am weak and I need Thy strength and pow r To help me over my weakest hour. Help me through the darkness Thy face to see. Lead me, O Lord, lead me. Refrain Help me tread in the paths of righteousness, Be my aid when Satan and sin oppress. I am putting all my trust in Thee. Lead me, O Lord, lead me. Refrain I am lost if You take Your hand from me, I am blind without Thy light to see. Lord, always let me Thy servant be. Lead me, O Lord, lead me.
