The Resurrection of Lazarus, Where Jesus Declares, "I Am the Resurrection and the Life" (John 11:1-45; Holy Gospel of the Day) ST. PETER EV. 2 THE DIVINE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT, April 2nd, 2017, 9:00 am "No human being, but only Christ Himself Who was crucified for us, can make of the bread and wine set before us the Body and Blood of Christ" (John Chrysostom, Early Church father). This is what Christ does when we follow His command and institution in THE LORD'S SUPPER. It is also our desire to follow Christ's command to hold fast to everything that He taught. For this reason, the congregations of our Synod have mutually promised to practice "Close" Communion. Penitent, believing members of sister Missouri Synod churches are welcome to commune at this altar. Other guests desiring to commune are therefore kindly asked to speak with the Pastor before the service. I love the LORD, because he has heard* my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me,* therefore I will call on him as long as I live. The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;* I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the LORD:* "O LORD, I pray, deliv- er my soul!" For you have delivered my soul from death,* my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the be- ginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Precious in the sight of the LORD*

Holy Gospel A C A This is the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. ***NOTE: The Triple Alleluia is not sung during Lent John 11:17-27, (Responses sung) The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eleventh chapter. Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, he whom you love is ill. 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, Let us go to Judea again. 8 The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again? 9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. 11 After saying these things, he said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him. 12 The disciples said to him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover. 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him. 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you. 23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again. 24 Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the
resurrection on the last day. 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? 27 She said to him, Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world. 28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, The Teacher is here and is calling for you. 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, See how he loved him! 37 But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying? 38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days. 40 Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God? 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me. 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out. 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go. 45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, A This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. (Sit)

ANNOUNCEMENTS WE THANK REV. JAMES FUNDUM from the Seminary Development Office for serving as celebrant and preacher this morning. We pray the Lord's blessings on his message from the Word of the Lord, and on our hearing of the Word. WHILE PASTOR MOEHRING IS ON THE RETURN TRIP FROM GERMANY, if a pastor is needed in an emergency, you can call Pastor Koeneman at Immanuel Lutheran (Union Twp.): (church); (his cell). Pastor Moehring and the group will return sometime this evening. NEXT SUNDAY, PALM SUNDAY, APRIL 9th, will be the Divine Service of Holy Communion with the Rite of Confirmation. The Confirmands this year will be Kaylee Fuelling and Briena Myers. OFFERINGS: Currently unavailable; will be included next week. Thanks! Discipleship is a life of joy. Jesus invited, "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:28). While discipleship requires ongoing learning and training, education is not a prerequisite. Few of the disciples were scholars; their learning of the Word was lifelong. Yet was also lifelong was the response of worship and service in the Lord from the saving faith He had given them. * SEMI-ANNUAL COLLECTION OF LWML MITE BOX OFFERINGS IS TODAY * THE GRAINERY EASTER FLOWER PLANT PRICE LISTS have been included in the bulletin. Please have these turned in by TODAY, April 2 nd. Thank you! THANK YOU FROM THE ST. PETER BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE: We wish to thank those of you who generously donate food or money for funeral meals when we call you...it makes our service to the family so much easier. We are always looking for more volunteers to help the day of the meal with preparing the food, serving and clean up. There are several pans/bowls in the kitchen that are left from these food donations that you may be missing from your kitchens...check the counter to see if any of them are yours. We currently have some there with the last names Linder, Gresley, Zimmerman and several that have no names. Feel free to give us a call if you are so moved. Karen and Leanne Thank you.

LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT SUNDAY'S (APRIL 9th) READINGS Isaiah 50:4-9a Philippians 2:5-11 John 12:12-19 Now Is the Hour When the Son of Man Is Glorified "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming." He comes in gentle humility, "sitting on a donkey's colt," yet also as the King of Israel "in the Name of the Lord" (John 12:13, 15). His royal glory is faithful obedience and self-sacrificing service "to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Phil. 2:8). The love of God is manifested in the Cross and Passion of His Son for the salvation of sinners. Since He has borne our sins and suffered our death, "God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the Name that is above every name" (Phil. 2:9); and, He exalts us in His Resurrection. Our Lord did not hide His face "from disgrace and spitting" (Is. 50:6), but He trusted His God and Father, Who raised Him from death and the grave and exalted Him to His right hand. This same King Jesus now comes to us in gentle humility in His Supper, where He feeds us with His Body and cleanses and covers us with His Blood, so that "after His Resurrection" we also shall rise and enter the New Jerusalem of heaven.
