16 Preface Continuing the spirit of former missionaries and establishing a new evangelization culture, we form a continuous process of missionary work. We can learn from the footsteps of the forerunners and from what they have left for us to develop new domains for evangelization work. With the kind cooperation of the archivist of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese, Rev. Louis Ha, the Working Group on the Year of Evangelization published 'Evangelization History of Hong Kong - Wun Yiu, Ting Kok and Vim lin Tsai' and 'Evangelization History of Hong Kong - Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon Tong and Sham Shui Po' in May and October, respectively We have primed a total of 60,000 copies of the two pamphlets. which are very popular among Catholics. The evangelization history of Hong Kong is over a hundred years. The missionaries' footstep lied not only in New Territories and Kowloon. They first started their work on Hong Kong Island. In order for us to understand the evangelization history, with (he help of Rev. Louis Ha, we now publish (his third pampler. The three churches on Hong Kong Island are covered in this pamphlet - St. Joseph's Church (1871), St. Margaret's Church in Happy Valley (1923) and St. Anthony's Church in Sai Ving Pun (1953). The establishment of rhese three churches have either directly or indirectly involved with the evangelization work of the male and female religious congregations. especially in their education and charity work. The Hong Kong Catholic Church today is well developed. \V/ewill never forget the greatest effort and contributions made by the missionaries and laity all these years in serving God and others. They started the difficult evangelization work empty-handed and this shows the collaboration of God and man. There would not be the present jf there were nor the JnSt. Let us work hard in continuing the spirit of me former missionaries and establish a new evangelization culture for the Hong Kong Church. 20 Preface There are already three pamphlets published for 'The History of Evangelization in Hong Kong" series. These pamphlets present to readers the history of the Hong Kong Catholic Church- Wun Yiu, Ting Kok, Vim Tin Tsai in New Territories. Rosary Church Tsim Sha Tsui, St. Teresa's Church Kowloon Tong. St. Francis of Assisi Church Sham Shui Po in Kowloon and St. Joseph's Church Mid Levels, St. Anthony's Church Sai Ying Pun and St. Margaret Mary's Church Happy Valley in Hong Kong Island. They recorded the course of the evangelization in Hong Kong over a hundred years. There have been numerous changes at these places throughout the years. These changes signify the countless efforts of our forerunners on their missionary journey. This is the fourth pamphlet of me series - "The Forerunners of Our Missionary Journey". While we are cherishing the fruitful missionary results of the past, we will never forget the pioneers who had initiated the evangelical mission. The names of over 70 deceased clergy since the establishment of the Hong Kong Catholic Mission are listed in the Hong Kong Catholic Church Directory. They all preached either in Hong Kong or near Guangdong province. Four of them were murdered. one drowned to death on his way, another died in a traffic accident and one even died at the labour camp in Qinghai. They diligently devoted their lives to the missionary work. The Hong Kong Catholic Church was established over 150 years ago. The forerunners started with great effort but now lack (he manpower to carryon their work. The number of newly ordained priests each year cannot meet the demands of the Church as there are many more old priests going ro retire. The harvest is rich but the labourers are few. This pamphlet alerts us the future needs of the Hong Kong Catholic Church. And we all, as the People of God. should be ready to contribute towards the building up of the Church.
