4 January 26, 2007 Dr. David Naugle "A Celebrity Faculty, a Malignant Curriculum, and a Peer Pressure Grading Scale: The University of Popular Culture and Christian Higher Education in Contention" Dr. David K. Naugle is chair and professor of philosophy at Dallas Baptist University where he has worked for seventeen years in both administrative and academic capacities. He earned a Th.D. in systematic theology, and a Ph.D. in humanities with concentrations in philosophy and English literature. He is also the director of the Paideia College Society, a student academic organization the goal of which is to deepen the undergraduate students educational experience through a vision of Christian humanism and classical liberal education in this context. February 2, 2007 Erika Wiegand 500 Days in Baghdad: A DBU Graduate Reflects on Her Experience in Iraq. L. -Erika Wiegand is a DBU graduate and former member of the Pew College Society. She is also student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Erika has been to Iraq twice, and recently returned home from an extensive time in Baghdad. She is especially interested in veterinary medicine in a missiological context. She lives and goes to church in Duncanville, Texas. The fall of Saddam has unleashed religious violence against the Christian community in Iraq. Unless special attention is given to their plight by concerned people in the US and by the Iraqi government, this ancient people will continue to suffer grievously as they have in the past. 4
5 February 9, 2007 Kevin Belmonte Hero for Humanity: Introducing the Movie Amazing Grace on the Life and Work of William Wilberforce Kevin Belmonte is the lead historical consultant for the film Amazing Grace ( in wide release February 23, Mr. Belmonte is also is the director of The Wilberforce Project at Gordon College, an initiative that fosters scholarship relating to all aspects of William Wilberforce s legacy. He has appeared on C-SPAN s Book TV and has been profiled in the Boston Globe. In March 2006, he lectured on William Wilberforce at the House of Parliament in London. The occasion was the launch of his latest book Travel with William Wilberforce: The Friend of Humanity (Day One Publications). His other books include 365 Days With Wilberforce: Daily Readings From the Writings o f William Wilberforce; and a new revised paperback edition of his awardwinning full length Wilberforce biography, William Wilberforce: A Hero for Humanity (Zondervan/HarperCollins).Kevin holds a B.A. in English literature from Gordon College and an M.A. in church history from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Kelly, have recently become parents to a baby boy, Samuel, and together they live in York, Maine, USA. Williams is Professor of Religion in Patristic and Historical Theology, Baylor University. He is the author of such books as Evangelicals and Tradition: The Formative Influe nce of the Early Church (Baker Academic, 2005); Retrieving the Tradition and Renewing Evangelicalism: A Primer for Suspiciou s Protestants (Eerdmans, 1999); and Ambrose of Milan and the End of the Nicene Arian Conflicts (Oxford University Press, 1995). His work has been published in periodicals including the Journal of Early Christi an Studies, Interpretation, and Church History. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Toronto, his Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary, his M.Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and his B.A. from Northeastern Bible College. February 23 Dr. Steven Garber 10 th Anniversary Paideia College Society/University Honors Program Spring Student Conference Keynote Speaker! (Great Hall, Mahler Student Center) Where Your Deep Gladness and the World s Deep Hunger Meet: Reflections on Faith, Vocation, and Culture Steven Garber has a classroom among many people in many places. Known as a public teacher, at the heart of his own calling is the longing that people understand the integral character of faith, vocation, and culture. He directs The Washington Institute ( which has as its core conviction that the church and society are renewed as a richer, truer vision of calling is taught and practiced. Steve is the author of The Fabric of Faithfulnes s: Weaving Together Belief and Behavior (IVP 1996). As a Senior Fellow for the C.S. Lewis Institute, he is a contributor to the volumes, Faith Goes to Work: Reflections From the Marketplace and Get Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalog.. He also contributed to the Mars Hill Audio journal report, Tacit Knowing, Truthful Knowing: The Life and Wor k of Michael Polanyi. A native of the great valleys of 6
7 Colorado and California, he is married to Meg and with their children, lives in Virginia where they are members of The Falls Church. March 2 Professor Ross O Brien Bad to Good: On Science and the Search for Truth in Business Ethics QuickTimeô and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture. Ross O'Brien was born in Bandung, Indonesia, where his family served as missionaries. He received his undergraduate degree from Baylor University in 1987 and then worked at DBU from while pursuing an MBA also at DBU. He taught in Indonesia , and then worked for AT&T in Birmingham, AL., He started an Internet development company and ran it from In Fall 2002, he returned to DBU to teach and also began working on a Ph.D. in Business Administration at UTA, from which he hopes to graduate in May He has made multiple presentations at professional meetings and is pursuing a diversity of research interests, with several current works under review for publication. He has been married to Lisa for 20 years and they have two boys, Connor (15) and Collin (12). They attend First Baptist Church in Arlington. March 9 Robert Whitfield A National House of Prayer for All People A Historical, Architectural, Religious and Cultural Look at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. 7
8 A native Texan, Robert Whitfield was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He received his Business Management degree from LeTourneau University and is presently finishing a Master's degree in Professional Development at Dallas Baptist University. Mr. Whitfield was formerly Manager of Special Projects at The Blood Center in Houston and the Carter BloodCare in Dallas/Ft. Worth working in the areas of donor recruitment and public relations. He formerly was in the Blood Banking field from He assisted, for several weeks, the South African Blood Transfusion Service in 1999 promoting the need for blood donations and HIV awareness throughout South Africa within religious organization networks. He is presently on the staff at Dallas Baptist University in the Advancement area working with Donor Relations, International Relations, and Foundations. He serves as a monthly usher at the Washington National Cathedral and is presently working on a book entitled, I Just Listened, stories about people with real life issues. He lives in Dallas, Texas. March 23 (Fred and Luann Wilkinson Lecture) Ken Myers Why There Really IS a War between Science and Christianity: C. S. Lewis s Vision of a Repentant Science Ken Myers is the executive producer at MARS HILL AUDIO, a nonprofit organization devoted to helping Christians think wisely about modern culture through a variety of audio resources ( He was formerly the editor of This World (the forerunner of the monthly journal First Things). Prior to his tenure at This World, he was executive editor of Eternity, the evangelical monthly magazine. For eight years he was a producer and editor for National Public Radio, working for much of that time as arts and humanities editor for the two news programs, Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Mr. Myers is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he studied film theory and criticism, and of Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He is married and has two children, and lives in central Virginia. 8
9 March 30 Dawn Waters Baker Communicating God in Art Dawn Waters Baker was born and raised in the Philippines as a child of missionaries. She counts it a privilege to have been raised by a strong faith and in two cultures. During her childhood, she learned to draw and paint, and during her college years learned she could use art to communicate her feelings on canvas. Dawn graduated from Dallas Baptist University in 1998, Magna Cum Laude, with a BA in Fine Arts. She lives in Garland, Texas with her husband of four years, Kendrick, and her daughter, Myla, born March 24th, She seeks to communicate truth, goodness and beauty in her art. Dawn has recently finished a five-piece series entitled, "Solas of the Reformation" for Dallas Theological Seminary. She works on commission and has had her skyscapes in several private collections as well as offices, most recently, Dallas Eye Care Associates, L.P. She is currently affiliated with Riverbend Fine Arts Gallery, Marble Falls, Texas, Marta Stafford, Gallery Director. April 13 Al Haley Masters of Metaphor: Faith and Creative Writing (A part of the new, annual DBU literary festival) Dr. Haley is Assistant Professor of English and writer in Residence at Abilene Christian University. He holds the BA in economics from Yale University (1976), and an MFA from the University of Houston (1993). His areas of expertise include writing in fiction and poetry. 9
10 April 20 Dr. John Jaeger "Reviving Interest in Books and Reading in an Age of Blogging and MySpace" Dr. John Jaeger is Doctoral Research and Reference Librarian at DBU. He received his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology in 2003 and teaches courses in the College of Christian Faith. John has a wife, Jeanna, and a sixteen year old daughter, Beth. April 27 Prof. Todd Von Helms Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God Revisited A Dramatic Presentation: Jonathan Edwards and His In/Famous Sermon in Context Todd von Helms joined the DBU faculty as an adjunct history professor in In 2006 he joined the full-time faculty as Assistant Professor of History and Christian Studies. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies. Todd earned a bachelor s degree from the University of Texas at Austin before graduating from DBU with a Master of Liberal Arts degree. He later earned both a Master of Christian Education degree from Southwestern Seminary, and a Master of Divinity degree from Southern Seminary. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Texas at Dallas. In addition to having served as director of the Baptist Student Ministry at Northwood University, Minister to Students at FBC Cedar Hill, Todd also spent a semester studying theater at Oxford University. Todd, his wife Caroline, and their four-year-old son, Hunter, live in Waxahachie, Texas. 10 th Anniversary 10

Special Musical Guest: Brooks Williams (Amherst, Massachusetts) Brooks is a stunning guitarist whose bluessoaked, rhythmic, and soulful music defies categorization. After fifteen solo recordings and nearly two decades of touring the world, he is one of the most wellrespected players on the circuit. His musical vision spans continents and genres blues, jazz, slide, fingerstyle where creative chords, walking bass lines, and fiery riffs abound. Dirty Linen magazine calls Brooks Williams one of "America's musical treasures." Call for Papers: Undergraduate Student Component: Current DBU/PCS/HONORS students are invited to gain valuable academic experience through the preparation and presentation of a scholarly paper on wide-ranging, interdisciplinary topics in a friendly, supportive environment. Graduate Student Component: DBU alumnae now in graduate school and other graduate students are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in this conference as well.
