I m a pastor, so I receive my pastoring from other pastors. Sometimes my pastors are authors of a book I read or a sermon I watch or listen to. I don t depend solely on others for my spiritual food. That s why my chair time with God (reading the Bible and meditating on what I ve read) is vital to my spiritual health. However, I know that I benefit from having other voices in my spiritual journey. A few years ago, I heard a pastor talk about prayer. He advocated praying for others in 10-second prayers. The benefits of doing so include: acknowledging God more often, remembering to pray a second time if you ve prayed once before, comfort for the person you prayed for, and a relational connection with that person. Since hearing this teaching, I ve practiced the 10-second prayer many times. To date, I ve only had one person refuse my request to say a prayer for them. I m ok with that because it reminds me that we all have different comfort zones.
2 Have you ever had someone pray for you and then experience a sense of comfort resulting from the time of prayer? What s that about? What is the relationship between prayer and comfort? Certainly, we can be comforted by the knowledge that another person cares about us. It s easy to feel that we are all alone, so when we experience connection, we also often experience comfort. There is also great comfort in knowing that God sees us and is for us. God even invites us to cast all our cares upon Him. In his letter to Christians, Peter wrote, Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Sometimes our worries and troubles feel so heavy, we think they ll crush us. When we pray with someone, we help them to leave their troubles with God. Prayers aren t incantations of some magic that Christ-followers practice. They are simply human attempts at acknowledging God and asking Him to accomplish what we cannot. Would you be willing to consider asking someone if you could say a 10-second prayer for them? You might be surprised at how satisfying it is. My experience indicates that most people you ask will be open and you will be more likely to remember to pray for them again (and again). So, do you have 10 seconds to spare? Your brother and friend, shaun PS I do understand that most problems are complex rather than simple and therefore involve a series of factors in the solution. That said, every solution has a starting point and that s why I advocate the 10-second prayer to get the process going or to enable it to continue. As Dr. Leo Marvin and Bob Wiley would say, take baby steps 10 seconds at a time.
