Karen Hawkins Mr. Ken Butler Treasurer Sunday Lectionary for February February 5 th Epiphany V FIRST READING: Isaiah 40:21-31 The Judeans in exile have a reason to be hopeful: the One who will bring them to freedom is the God who created the world and gives strength to those who are weary. SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 Paul continues his careful argument about the freedom of God's people. In Christ we are free, he says, not to injure one another, but to help. Using his own work as an example, Paul argues that we are not so much free from each other as free for each other. GOSPEL: Mark 1:29-39 Everywhere Jesus goes, many people expect him to set them free from oppression. Everywhere he goes, he heals them, and sets them free. Disease, devils, and death are running for their lives. The forces that diminish human life are rendered powerless by Jesus. February 12 th Epiphany VI FIRST READING: 2 Kings 5:1-14 Elisha tells Naaman, a Syrian general, to immerse himself in the Jordan River where he is cleansed of his leprosy, revealing not the magic of certain water but the power of Israel's God. SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Paul uses two athletic images--the runner and the boxer--to call us to a life of discipline in which self-control is for the sake of a higher good, in this case the good of all God's people. GOSPEL: Mark 1:40-45 Jesus cures a leper and asks him to tell no one but a priest, in accordance with Levitical law. Though Jesus performs miracles, his identity as Messiah will not be understood until the cross. February 19 th Transfiguration FIRST READING: 2 Kings 2:1-12 Today's reading centers on the transfer of power and authority from the prophet Elijah to Elisha. Their travels, which retrace the path of Joshua back to Moab (the place where Moses died), and the parting of the waters demonstrate that Elisha and Elijah are legitimate successors of the great lawgiver Moses. SECOND READING: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 The epiphany, or revelation of God, at Jesus' transfiguration is renewed in every believer's life when the light of Christ shines in the heart to reveal God's glory. GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-9 Mark's gospel presents the transfiguration as a preview of what would become apparent to Jesus' followers after he rose from the dead. Confused disciples are given a vision of God's glory manifest in the beloved Son. February 26 th Lent I FIRST READING: Genesis 9:8-17 Today's reading centers on the conclusion to the flood story. The Lord destroys the earth by flood, except for Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark. Yet, divine destruction, because of human sinfulness, gives way to divine commitment. As in the first creation (Genesis 1), God blesses the human community and establishes a covenant with all creatures. SECOND READING: 1 Peter 3:18-22 In this reading, the author emphasizes God's saving action on behalf of Noah, his family, and the creatures. This saving presence continues to be manifested through Christ in the act of baptism. GOSPEL: Mark 1:9-15 The Spirit that comes upon Jesus at his baptism sustains him when he is tested by Satan so that he might proclaim the gospel of God's reign. February 2012 Page 2

ARCHIVES, please speak with Pam Williams. Your questions and comments will be addressed using the Covenant of Conduct, adopted by the Congregation Council a number of years ago. COVENANT OF CONDUCT In order for the congregation and the council to deal effectively with issues in the congregation, the following guidelines are to be followed: 1. The council affirms the right of each disciple to express his/her opinion about the life and ministry of the congregation. 2. Generally speaking, the congregation operates with a direct democracy form of government that allows disciples to share their opinions directly with the pastors, church council, commissions, and at congregational meetings. 3. When disciples of the congregation express an opinion to a member of the council, the council person shall ask, "What would you like me to do with this information?" 4. If the disciple desires to have the information transmitted to the council, the disciple shall be invited to bring the information/opinion to the next council meeting. The time and date shall be given. 5. If the disciple does not wish to appear in person, the council member shall ask the disciple for permission to use his/her name in reporting. If permission is not given, the council member shall say, "I'm sorry but I will not be able to report this to the council since we do not deal with anonymous letters or comments." 6. If permission is given, the council member shall report the information/opinion to the council and use the disciple's name. 7. At his/her discretion, a council member may ask that the disciple refer this issue to another council member for presentation. 8. Each issue shall be placed on the agenda and written in the minutes along with the action taken by the council. Action may include: "Received as information," "Pastor and/or President to visit disciple and report at next meeting," etc. 9. Opinions may be shared in writing with the council and shall be handled in the above mentioned manner if the letter or statement is signed. LUTHERIDGE+LUTHEROCK NEWS February Is Camp Month Children today need summer faith camp more than ever! I m convinced, and so are youth and family ministry specialists that time away in intentional Christian community is life-changing and critical for faith development in young people/ Sixty percent of ELCA pastors say outdoor ministry was significant to their call to ministry. The Search Institute found that a week at camp is the second most important thing a child can have in their life to pass on faith (the faith of the family is first). Dr. Roland Martinson from Luther Seminary has said that if his children were growing up today, he would do everything he could to get them to camp and then to work on a camp staff because of what this does for a child s faith development. I know that there is a huge list of demands on kid s time in the summer. They have sports camps, family vacations, jobs, and so many other options for how to spend a summer. However, if we believe that faith is important, I hope you will also invest in faith camp for your kids. At Lutheridge and Lutherock, we have two wonderful outdoor ministry facilities. Their staff is full of Christian spirit and the program is extremely safe. Lutheridge and Lutherock have summer programs for 1 st graders though 12 th graders. In addition to this, family camp is available for all ages, as is Music Week. Lutheridge and Lutherock have a history of safe, fun, faith-filled programs that started in February 2012 Page 5

6 A special Outdoor Adventure Program has been developed to attract middle school and high school youth. Activities include: rock-climbing, whitewater rafting, caving, backpacking, canoeing, 41 challenge tower, and high ropes courses. Summer brochures are available in the church office. Lutheridge and Lutherock have scholarship money available, so don t skip camp just because of the cost. There are plenty of options for how to spend your summer. There is no more important activity to be involved in this summer than a week at camp where friendships are made and strengthened, and where faith grows and leadership develops in significant ways. Bring Non- Perishable Staples Dear Friends at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Susan and I wish to thank you for sharing your fellowship hall for our families to gather before our wedding on 26 th at Church of the Cross. You have a lovely church! The fellowship hall was perfect for our gathering. 7 News from the Committees Welcome to Christ the King In an effort to properly welcome visitors to CTK, the Welcome to Christ the King team met to review usher responsibilities in preparation for training on Jan 22. The team reviewed the current responsibilities of the ushers and will make some changes. They will align the ushers to work in conjunction with the new greeters. The team also suggested changes to the weekly service bulletin to make it easier for guests to follow the service. They will be sent to the Music and Worship Team for consideration. While the greeters and ushers are our first point of contact with visitors, we hope that every member of the congregation will join the Welcome Wagon. Here are a few simple greeting suggestions for breaking the ice: Welcome to Christ the King this morning! God bless you. We re glad you are here this morning. Good morning and welcome to our church. I ve not met you yet! Welcome. My name is... We want newcomers to feel welcome and to experience the warmth of Christ the King as they worship with us. A good first impression can lead to a second visit and then even more subsequent visits. Sometimes sharing our faith just means being yourself. The Welcome to Christ the King team meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30pm in the fellowship hall. All congregation members are encouraged to participate. Jeff Callier Secretary Emeritus Adult Sunday School Opportunities If you are not yet involved in a Sunday School class on Sunday mornings, we encourage you to join a class that meets from 9:15-10:15. Pastor Hawkins leads a class in Classroom 1. Bob Hawkins is finishing a series on the Church Year. Next on the schedule is a Bible study exploring the Sunday lessons for Lent. After that the class is considering a book discussion either When Bad Christians Happen to Good People or A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. There is also a CTK Sunday School Class led by different members of the class in Classroom 3. The class is finishing up a study on cults and religions this month, and will be starting a new study on Sunday, February 5 th. This course is a 13-week study of the book: Evangelism without Additives: What if Sharing Your Faith Meant Just Being Yourself?, by Jim Henderson. Ara Adams will lead this course.
