2 A Message from the Executive Director In 1965, shortly after I was born, the Rolling Stones released their hit song (I can t get no) Satisfaction. That was my problem years ago, and I believe that song still holds true for many people today. I worked hard, I got raises, but I d go to work every day and come home tired wondering what I d accomplished. Whether I was on the floor of the factory, as in my younger days, or at a desk as a manager, my entire career was about building things. No satisfaction in that! In 2008 I started working for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, and I went from building things to building people! Now, I go home at the end of the day feeling good because we helped someone make real positive change in their life! I know we can t help everyone and so I Joe Miller often think of the story of the little boy, who when seeing all of the Executive Director stranded starfish on the beach, ran down the shoreline picking each one up throwing it back into the water, while his mother told him to stop; saying there were too many, he wasn t making a difference at all. The boy stopped, looked up at her, then picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean. Looking back up he replied it made a difference to that one! And that s my point, as long as we re making a difference in someone s life, I ll continue to do what I do. It s how I get my satisfaction! Everyone has value and worth. Jesus didn t just die for a select few! So on behalf of all of the people we serve, my staff, myself, and the Board of Directors, thanks for believing in us, and supporting the work of Souls Harbour Rescue Mission. God bless! 3 A Legacy of Love! History of the Mission Our ability to care for not only Regina s, but Saskatchewan s, most vulnerable citizens in the future, is only possible through the generous care and compassion that you provide for those within our community who struggle with poverty, homelessness, and addiction; today. You can give hope and a sense of belonging to those who need it the most. After you have provided for your family and friends in your will, you can create a Legacy of Love for the many who will walk through the Mission s doors in the future, desperately looking for someone to help them. How to Leave a Legacy: Leaving a bequest to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission is the simplest way to leave your Legacy of Love, and writing or changing your will is not the overwhelming task that you may think it to be. Everyone should have a will and update it on a regular basis, and we strongly recommend that you use the services of a legal professional. To include a bequest to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission you will need to give your legal professional our correct name and address: Souls Harbour Rescue Mission Inc. PO Box 3356 Stn. Main Regina, SK, S4P 3H1 Charitable # RR001 Sample Bequest Clauses: A share of the residue (designates a percentage of the remainder of your Estate, once debts and specific bequests have been paid) I give to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission Inc., PO Box 3356 Stn. Main, Regina, SK, S4P 3H1 percent of the residue of my Estate for its charitable purposes. A specific bequest (designates a specific amount of cash or other asset/s) I give to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, PO Box 3356 Stn. Main, Regina, SK, S4P 3H1. The sum of $ (or a description of the property or asset) for its charitable purposes. Other ways to Leave a Legacy Gift: Gifts of Life Insurance, Beneficial Interest in RRSP s and RRIF s, and Securities/Shares, can all help support Souls Harbour Rescue Mission in a variety of ways; from current initiatives such as the Samaritan Project and/or the Affinity Endowment Fund, to future operational charitable purposes. If you would like more information on how to leave your legacy gift/s for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, we d love to hear from you, and you can reach us at: Joseph Miller Executive Director T: ext. 44 E: legacy@shrmsk.com For three decades Souls Harbour Rescue Mission has been serving the City of Regina and the province of Saskatchewan. The Mission originally began as two different charities. Gerri Carroll founded Souls Harbour Mission House in She began reaching out to others, in her basement, with a coffee pot and some milk crates as chairs. Within a year she was feeding people a day. Eventually, word spread on the street that there was now a safe place to go for a good meal and many more were served on a daily basis. Gerri Carroll passed away in March of 2006, but her legacy lives on. Ken and Michelle Porter started the Regina RESCUE Mission in They moved to Regina from Winnipeg with a dream of starting a long-term recovery program here. The first building they rented was a dilapidated crack house located at 2076 Scarth Street, and while Gerri continued to feed the hungry, the Porters reached out to the homeless and the addicted. It was in the Scarth Street building that the RRM s first longterm recovery program was started. In January of 2007, Souls Harbour Mission House and the Regina RESCUE Mission officially merged to form Souls Harbour RESCUE Mission. The two organizations had been working together for a while and realized that they shared many of the same goals. Rather than duplicating services, the two became one. Today Souls Harbour Rescue Mission provides a variety of programs and services including; Emergency Shelter, a Free Clothing store, a Meal Program (soup kitchen), the Dean Smith Youth Center for at-risk youth, Little Souls Daycare (60 subsidized spaces), the Shayil Home Women s Addiction Program for women and their children, and affordable housing through Harbour House, a 30 suite low income apartment building for the hard-to-house, and another 17 more suites coming online through the Samaritan Project. For more details please visit our website at Mission Statement Souls Harbour RESCUE Mission exists to rescue people from poverty and addiction, by offering the Gospel message through emergency help, such as food, clothing and shelter, and Life Changing Recovery Programs. Love, Evangelism, Communication, and Integrity Core Values

4 2017 Programs and Services Food, Shelter & Clothing Nights of Shelter (beds) provided for men = 3,795 Number of individual meals served at the soup kitchen = 46,885 Community Holiday meals served (Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) = 3 More than 30,000 pieces of clothing given away Total volunteers at the soup kitchen for the year = 3,353 Matthew Comstock There is a man who had been staying at our men s emergency shelter on and off for approximately six years. One day I saw him, and because I hadn t seen John (name changed) for quite some time I decided to ask him how things were going and what he was doing? In the past when John would stay with us, he worked almost every day as a day labourer, returning in the evenings for supper at the soup kitchen and then he d ask for a bed for the night. He told me that he was working on a house that he had purchased a while ago. He said he was quite busy renovating it. He said he'd been saving his money for years, apparently while working and staying at our shelter, and that he d now bought an old fixer-upper for himself. John now has a home to call his own! John was happy. He s not just an inspiration to others, he s an inspiration to me! - Submitted by Staff A while ago I had the opportunity to meet and talk with a young woman that had come to us. She was very young, 18 I think, and obviously pregnant. She was scared, unsure of the future and had a lot of concerns. It was her first child and because her parents did not approve of the pregnancy, they weren t supporting her in her decision to have the child. So because there was no one she could go to with all of her questions she had come to us. And to make it even worse, there were domestic issues with the baby s father and at times she didn t feel safe being with him. We ended up talking for hours and hours about relationships, children, and even God. She asked me what the labor and delivery would be like, and because I have three children of my own she asked about what raising a child was like. What could she expect and what should she do? I told her of the ups and downs, trying to give her honest answers. I hope that the advice I gave her and the experiences I shared with her helped her. The Samaritan Project In the Bible there is a story about a Good Samaritan. In this story there is a person walking along the road when they re mugged and beaten up by a robber. Many people pass by, even crossing to the other side of the street to avoid having to deal with this wounded broken person. After a while, a Samaritan comes along and notices this individual. They help the person onto their animal and take them to an Inn; where the Samaritan delivers the beaten up person to the Inn-keeper, providing a small sack of coins to help with the care of the stranger. The Samaritan leaves, telling the Innkeeper that they ll be back to cover any other costs that the Innkeeper may incur in caring for this person. In this story, our donors have shown themselves as being the Good Samaritan over and over again, and we are privileged that so many people see Souls Harbour Rescue Mission as being that Innkeeper, one in whom they trust with the care of others. We are honored to serve those whom God brings to us. Today, Souls Harbour Rescue Mission is building a new Inn and so we are asking all of you Good Samaritans to help us with this project. The maintenance costs for the old Inn, our existing building that houses the soup kitchen, men s emergency shelter, and clothing store, are escalating, it s over a 100 years old, and it s already been renovated on a major scale once. We ve also outgrown the place! The story of our new Inn begins with the location. Years ago, Souls Harbour Rescue Mission purchased a piece of contaminated land at 1632 Angus Street. The property was an environmental disaster, contaminated with lead, sulphuric acid, and so on! After cleaning it up we were eventually able to reclaim the land! And now, today, we re continuing the reclamation process by constructing a new GREEN facility, with a variety of energy saving initiatives such as solar energy, LED lighting, etc. These initiatives will allow more of your donor dollars to go towards programming, with less dollars needed for the day to day operational expenses. Our new facility is innovative and passively designed. As an example our new dining room will convert to the men s shelter in the evenings. The 2nd floor of this building will have 6 affordable housing suites, some offices, and a large volunteer room. The 3rd floor will house a subsidized 60 spot daycare, and the 4th floor will host another 11 affordable housing suites. In conclusion we will have reclaimed a contaminated lot, built an environmentally friendly GREEN passively designed building, reduced our long term operational costs, and increased the services we provide. Construction is well under way now, with an anticipated grand opening in December of Though we told her she could stay with us, in the end she left, saying she had another place she could go if she had too. I had the sense that she was at ease and that a lot of her questions about parenthood had been answered. Even though we were only able to provide her with a good meal, some tea and an ear to hear her concerns, I felt she had been helped both emotionally and spiritually. It is moments like these when I know that we re meeting people right where they re at, helping them, when they allow us, in the best way we can. I was a lost soul living in darkness. Despite that I went to live with my mother, where I hid from the world. I mostly slept and ate due to the meth (crystal meth) I was on. That drug cost me my loved ones and almost cost me my life. I thought about committing suicide. I hated myself and I didn t want this special gift called life that was given to me. If I could just put my suicide plan into action, everything would be over. Thank God, I didn t succeed at that! My next move was to go see my addiction worker. I told her what I was going through and that I needed help. She gave me a business card that said Shayil Home. A one year treatment centre located in Regina. I knew it was what I so desperately needed. A week later I was in treatment. I admit I was scared, a fear of the unknown, but under all that I felt content. I knew everything was going to be okay. I arrived on November 17, 2016, and on the 20th I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. That morning at church, when I accepted him, I felt this sensation of warmth and love that I have never experienced! Something within me just lit up. I felt alive and secure. It was the supernatural of the Holy Spirit. I was so hungry for his word. His word is alive and, so very, very, very, very, true. Jesus has changed me in so many ways. He has produced this kind of fruit in me; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol (Galatians 5:22-23). He has brought me up out of the horrible pit of miry clay (Psalm 40:2). I am on a healing journey. Experiencing Gods divine providence in my life! I won t take my life for granted. It s a gift to me from God and he has an amazing plan for my future! I m looking forward to that. Information and data was obtained from Souls Harbour Rescue Mission s independently audited financial statements for each fiscal year independently audited financial statements are available upon request. * Does not include $215, in deferred contribution.

He was a very sick child, who was taking a lot of medication, which we had to administer to him every day. He could not eat and drink on his own. In addition to this, his level of walking was not at an ageappropriate developmental level. It was the main reason that he had to stay in the infant group much longer than others, even though he should have been moving up to the next age group. He is an adorable boy and his smile makes all of us happy. Everyone loves him and we all want the best for him, so his health has been the focus of our prayers for some time now. His mother is a single parent and she normally works long days, which means that sometimes William has to stay at our daycare for up to 10 hours. Therefore, the staff treat him like he was one of their own children, praying continuously for him. Today, with God's blessing upon our continuous efforts to help him with his physical, emotional, and intellectual development, William has changed visibly. He is a new boy. Now he is able to eat and drink without our support, and he can even clean up by himself after the meal. His language has developed significantly as well, and we are happy that he can now say his teacher s name and other words more clearly. He understands the environment around him, and his improved participation in various physical activities is noteworthy. It is surprising, he s 30 months old now, and finally he s ready to move up to the young pre-school group next month. We are grateful for what God has done for him! We continue to pray that God s favour goes with him going forward. Submitted by Staff Our Zeike's Place Youth Center operates under what we call our Partnership Model, meaning that basically we provide the facility free of charge to a select number of user groups and other ministries with similar goals as ours; and then they provide the youth programming! One day as we were driving the children home after programming, the bus was full of excitement and the kids were having a great time, I got a chance to have a conversation with Mary (name changed), age 10. Mary asked me if I was a teacher when I wasn t at CityKidz. I said no, but that I d always wanted to be one. For me, her question opened up the door to speak about the real purpose of CityKidz, which was to inspire children to pursue their dreams. I shared with her how God had a purpose for my life, and that God knew that I d get more satisfaction working with the children on Saturday than being in a classroom. Mary then said; I just love Saturdays. I asked her why and her answer was I get to go to kids clubs all day. I spend the afternoon at CityKidz and then in the evening I go to another program. I have so much fun. Submitted by CityKidz Is anything going on in her heart? She has been coming to youth for almost 4 years, and until very recently I wondered what if anything was going on inside of her. I had never heard much form her. She comes to youth faithfully, helps on Monday nights, and goes on all of our trips. Then right before our mission trip to La Ronge, she shared her story at one of our events. She said that she had attempted suicide after her grandma died (a year and a half ago), survived, and now believed that God gave her a second chance at life. As it turns out, on that trip, she blossomed. God opened her heart. She shared her story with the other kids a couple of times, and she engaged deeply in spiritual questions. She is searching for the truth, the other kids like her, and I think she could be a real leader. - Submitted by Gentle Road Church of Christ
