The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew The Reverend David T. Andrews, Jr., Rector SEASON OF CREATION 2018 Holy Eucharist November 4, :00 and 10:30 a.m. Fourth Sunday THE SAINTS AMONG US Give us the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see The Saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be. We ask them whence their victory came; they, with one united breath, Ascribe the conquest to the Lamb, their triumphs to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, His zeal inspired their breast; And, following their incarnate God, they reached the promised rest. Isaac Watts ( ) English hymnwriter, theologian and logician.
During the Season of Creation, much of the text in our liturgies is contemporary and reflective of our parish s view on the use of inclusive (or expansive) language. For more detailed information on this, please pick up a copy of the brochure entitled: The use of EXPANSIVE LANGUAGE (INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE) at The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew Prepared in July 2004 by the Expansive Language Task Force, appointed by the Liturgy and Special Events Committee of The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew. SAINTS TREE This morning during the offertory hymn, you are invited to come forward and place cards of remembrance on the Saints Tree to honor your personal saints, both living and those who have gone before. Additional Saints Cards are available in the narthex. As the candles are lighted, please enter into prayerful silence until the liturgy begins. -2-

Let everything that has breath praise God. Hallelujah! COLLECT FOR PURITY (all in unison) Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. 5 KYRIE ELEISON (* sung by the choir) from Requiem, Op. 9 Maurice Duruflé ( ) Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord have mercy on us, Christ have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us. COLLECT OF THE DAY O Source of all spiritual truth and treasure! O Fountainhead of love and grace! Nameless One of many Names! From many traditions of faith, you have surrounded us with so great a cloud of witnesses: Grant that, encouraged by the good example of all of these your servants, we may persevere in running the race that you set before us, until at last we may, with them, attain to your eternal joy; through Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, One God, here, now, everywhere and for ever. AMEN. All sit for the readings. THE WORD OF GOD At the conclusion of each Reading: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. FIRST READING Ephesians 4:1-6 I, Paul, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. PSALM 146 (all singing) Lauda, anima mea 1 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! * I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 2 Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, * - for there is no help in them. -5-
3 When they breathe their last, they re turn to earth, * and in that day their thoughts perish. 4 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! * whose hope is in the Lord their God; 5 Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever; 6 Who gives justice to those who are op pressed, * and food to those who hunger. 7 The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; * the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; 8 The Lord loves the righteous; the Lord cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. (2 nd half of chant) 9 The Lord shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all gener ations. Halle lujah! SECOND READING Romans 12:9-18 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. All who are able, stand as the Gospel Book is carried in procession. -6-
*CHANT (all may join in singing) Ipharadisi Traditional South African Ipharadisi, ikhaya labafile Kulapho sophumla khona Translation: Paradise, where all the dead are living, May we one day join them all there THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 5:1-12 SERMON Congregation: Glory to you, Lord Christ When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Congregation: Praise to you, Lord Christ All stand for The Creed, and remain standing or kneel for the prayers. THE CREED (all in unison) Tírechán's Creed (from The Patrician Texts from the Book of Armach AD 670 (Dublin), Ludwig Bieler) Our God is the God of all humans, the God of heaven and earth, the God of sea and rivers, the God of the sun and moon, the God of all the heavenly bodies, the God of the lofty mountains, the God of the lowly valleys. God is above the heavens; and he is beneath the heavens. Heaven and earth and sea, and everything that is in them, such he has as his abode. He inspires all things, he gives life to all things, he stands above all things, and he stands beneath all things. -7-
He enlightens the light of the sun, he strengthens the light of the night and the stars, he makes wells in the arid land and dry islands in the sea, and he places the stars in the service of the greater lights. He has a Son who is co-eternal with himself; and similar in all respects to himself; and neither is the Son younger than the Father, nor is the Father older than the Son; and the Holy Spirit breathes in them. And the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit are inseparable. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE God of Hope and Promise, in these times of trial and travail, strengthen us to arise each day with courage, patience, and stability of faith in you. Fill us with humility and the inner peace to express only genuine love to friends and strangers alike, following the example of those we recognize as the Saints who have gone before us, and the saints who live among us now. O Lord, our God Help us keep our hope in you God of Hope and Promise, continually renew our willingness to place our trust in you, as we actively work through love, to frustrate the ways of the wicked. Endow us with the perseverance to guide Local, National, and Global Leaders to be noble in thought, word, and action and away from repaying evil with evil. We pray especially for: Donald, our President; Tom, Chris, and Lisa, our Members of Congress; John, our Governor; Matt, our County Executive; and Mike, our Mayor. O Lord, our God Help us keep our hope in you God of Hope and Promise, deliver from distress all in anguish from illness of body, mind, or spirit, and infuse those who give them care with gentleness and love. We now join our voices to pray aloud for those in need O Lord, our God Help us keep our hope in you God of Hope and Promise, as you bless and comfort all who mourn, keep us all in the knowledge that the days of joy and gladness flourish now in the hearts of all who live again in your Eternal Kingdom. We pray especially for: Leroy Ames, Sr., Ella Marie Herron, John Owens and Helen Richards. O Lord, our God Help us keep our hope in you God of Hope and Promise, we pause in this moment to offer you our other heartfelt thanksgivings, intercessions, petitions, and memorials, aloud or silently -8-
O Lord, our God Help us keep our hope in you God of Hope and Promise, inspire the hearts and minds of all who lead us in your church who encourage and remind us through Word and Sacrament, how to lead lives worthy of the calling for which we have been created. We pray especially for: Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Kevin our Bishop; David, our Rector; Lloyd, our Rector Emeritus; Emily and Peter, our Associate Priests. We also pray for the Church of Ceylon and for Episcopal Relief and Development. O Lord, our God Help us keep our hope in you The Celebrant adds the following prayer. God of us all, Saints and Sinners together, set our hearts free from the prison of hate, the emptiness of self-importance, and the mindlessness of earthly privilege. May we each claim the wisdom you have given us and no more, be ardent in spirit, and serve the you that is deep within us all. We ask through Jesus, our Christ, and by the Unity of the Holy Spirit, who together with you are One God above all, through all, and in all, for ever and ever. Amen. CONFESSION PEACE ANNOUNCEMENTS Let us confess our sins to God. God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. -9-
OFFERTORY THE HOLY COMMUNION *ANTHEM And I saw a new heaven Music by Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) Text from Revelation 21: 1-2, 4 SAINTS TREE And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bridegroom for her husband. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying: for the former things are passed away During the singing of the hymn, all are invited to come forward and place cards on the SAINTS TREE. *HYMN # 293 I sing a song of the saints of God Grand Isle THE HOLY COMMUNION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Eucharistic Prayer D Book of Common Prayer p. 372 It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, -10-
SANCTUS (*sung by the choir) from Requiem, Op. 9 Maurice Duruflé Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he (the one) who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Eucharistic Prayer continues on page 373 of the Book of Common Prayer. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. *AMEN S 143 Missa de Angelis THE LORD S PRAYER (contemporary) BCP 364 As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD FRACTION ANTHEM (*all singing) Christ Our Passover Craig Phillips (b. 1961) The choir adds the following verse. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast. The ANTIPHON is repeated by all -11-
INVITATION (all in unison) This is the table, not of the Church but of the Lord. It is made ready for those who seek him, those who love him and those who want to love him more. So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, or are questioning faith. You who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time or ever before, You who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come, not because the Church invites you; It is Christ who invites you to be known, fed, and loved here. COMMUNION EVERYONE IS INVITED TO HOLY COMMUNION *PIE JESU Isabel Gray, soloist from Requiem John Rutter Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem sempiternam. Merciful (pious) Lord Jesus, Grant them rest. Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them everlasting rest. SENDING FORTH OF THE EUCHARISTIC VISITORS In the name of God and of this congregation, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in Christ's body and blood, We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. POST COMMUNION PRAYER (said by all) Ground of all being, source of all life, we thank you for feeding us with this spiritual food; for assuring us of your gift of eternal life; and for uniting us with the blessed company of all faithful people. And now we offer ourselves, all that we have and all that we are, to serve you faithfully in the world, through Jesus the Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit, reigns for ever.
