FIRST READING 2 Samuel 11:1-15 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel with him; they ravaged the Ammonites, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David rose from his couch and was walking about on the roof of the king's house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful. David sent someone to inquire about the woman. It was reported, "This is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite." So David sent messengers to get her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she was purifying herself after her period.) Then she returned to her house. The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, "I am pregnant. So David sent word to Joab, "Send me Uriah the Hittite." And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the people fared, and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house, and wash your feet." Uriah went out of the king's house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. When they told David, "Uriah did not go down to his house," David said to Uriah, "You have just come from a journey. Why did you not go down to your house?" Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah remain in booths; -2-

3 and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing." Then David said to Uriah, "Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day. On the next day, David invited him to eat and drink in his presence and made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, "Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, so that he may be struck down and die." PSALM 36:1-10 (All singing) Dixit injustus 1 Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in their hearts; * there is no fear of God be fore their eyes. 2 For they flatter themselves in their own eyes * that their iniquity can not be found out and hated. 3 The words of their mouths are mischief and de ceit; * they have ceased to act wisely and do good. 4 They plot mischief while on their beds; they are set on a way that is not good; * they do not re ject evil. 5 Your steadfast love, O Lord, ex tends to the heavens, * your faithful ness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; * you save humans and animals a like, O Lord. 7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! * All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the abundance of your house, * and you give them drink from the river of your de lights. 9 For with you is the fountain of life; * in your light we see light. SECOND READING Romans 12:9-13 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Cooper THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 10:38-42 SERMON Congregational Response: Glory to you, Lord Christ Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her." Grant us rest and refreshment in your Word and Sacraments as we persevere in prayer, act wisely, and do all good works in the name of our Savior Christ. -4-

5 O God of Steadfast Love, strengthen our zeal to carry your Word to all Dominions, Rulers, and Powers, in every corner of this world, great and small, that the hearts and minds of all earthly leaders are reconciled to you for the sake of all your peoples. We pray especially for: Donald, our President; Tom, Chris, and Lisa, our Members of Congress; John, our Governor; Matt, our County Executive; and Mike, our Mayor. O God of Steadfast Love, restore the health and hope of those burdened with chronic pain in body, mind, or spirit, and grant patience to all who offer comfort and care. We now join our voices to pray aloud for those in need O God of Steadfast Love, we give you thanks and praise for the joy of eternal life in glory now bestowed on those we have loved in this life. We pray especially for: Grace Elbert, Chip MacKelcan, Eugene McGowan, Nellie Megaigen and Nester Richardson. O God of Steadfast Love, we pause in this moment to offer you our other heartfelt thanksgivings, intercessions, petitions, and memorials, aloud or silently O God of Steadfast Love, look with favor upon all who serve you in your Church as they shepherd us on our journey to follow in the footsteps of Christ. We ask special blessings for your devoted servant, Maryann, as she follows the next path in her journey of preparation with a listening heart and a soul ever open to your will. We pray especially for: Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Kevin our Bishop; David, our rector; Lloyd, our Rector Emeritus; Emily and Peter, our Associate Priests; Maryann, our Lay Pastoral Associate, and Paul, our Celebrant. We also pray for the people of the Anglican Church of Rwanda; La Santisima Trinidad, Hidalgo, Mexico; and St. David's Church, Wilmington. The Celebrant adds the following prayer. Lord God, of Promise and Presence, infuse us with the wisdom to choose the better and everlasting part of the life you have given us to live, with genuine love, an ardent spirit, and unwavering service to Christ. We ask through Jesus, Firstborn of All Creation, and the Holy Spirit, our Wonderful Counselor, who together with you are One God, forever and ever. Amen. -5-

So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, or are questioning faith. You who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time or ever before, You who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come, not because the Church invites you; It is Christ who invites you to be known, fed, and loved here.
