BAPTISM OF NORA GRACE BALLWEG (10:30 am) Welcome and Presentation L: They were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant, and said to them. P: Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. L: Members and friends in Christ, we gather to celebrate God s gift of grace in the baptism of Nora Grace Ballweg. P: Thanks be to God! Address L: Baptism, the sacrament through which we are united to Jesus Christ and given a part in Christ s ministry of reconciliation. Baptism is the visible sign of an invisible event, the reconciliation of people to God. It shows the death of self and the rising to a life of obedience and praise. It shows also the pouring out of the Spirit on those whom God has chosen. In baptism, God works in us the power of forgiveness, the renewal of the Spirit, and the knowledge of the call to be a part of God s people. P: This is the water of baptism. Out of this water, we rise with new life, forgiven of sin and one in Christ, members of Christ s body. Questions L: As parents and sponsors of this child, will you encourage her to renounce the powers of evil and to receive the freedom of new life in Christ? Parents and Sponsors: We will, with the help of God. L: Will you teach her that she may be led to profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior by sharing with her the church s life, worship, and fellowship? Parents and Sponsors: We will, with the help of God. L: Christ will first be known to Nora by the Christ seen in your home. By the grace of God, will you model the Christian life for her, provide instruction in the Christian faith and live with her in the covenant of baptism so that she may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ? Parents and Sponsors: We will, with the help of God.
L: Will you, the children of First Congregational United Church of Christ, welcome Nora into the life of the church? Will you learn, play, and explore God s world with her? Children: We will, with the help of God. L: Jesus calls us to make disciples of all nations and to offer them the gift of grace in baptism. Will you who witness and celebrate this sacrament, nurture one another in the Christian faith and include Nora in your love and prayer? P: We promise our love and prayer. Act of Baptism L: The Lord be with you. P: And also with you. L: Let us pray. Gracious God, bless this water. By your Holy Spirit save those who confess the name of Jesus Christ that sin may have no power over them. Create new life in your servant Nora who will be baptized this day, that she too may rise with Christ. Glory to you, Eternal God, the one who was, and is, and shall always be, world without end. Amen. I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit be upon you, Nora, child of God, disciple of Christ, member of the church. Baptismal Song Child of Blessing, Child of Promise Child of blessing, child of promise, baptized with the Spirit s sign; with this water God has sealed you unto love and grace divine. Child of God your loving Parent, learn to know whose child you are. Grow to laugh and sing and worship, trust and love God more than all.
Prayer L: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, for this child and the grace acknowledged here in water and the Spirit. Embrace us all as sons and daughters in the one household of your love. Grant us grace to receive and nurture this new member of the body of Christ. P: Give to the newly baptized: strength for life s journey, courage in time of suffering, the joy of faith, the freedom of love, and the hope of new life: through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. 8 PSALM 24 (Cantor will introduce; congregation, please join in when directed) R Lift up your heads, O mighty gates; behold the glorious Ruler waits! The Sovereign One is drawing near; the Savior of the world is here. L: The earth is the LORD s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. P: Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? L: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully. P: They will receive blessing from the LORD, and vindication from the God of their salvation. L: Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. P: Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. L: Who is the King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle. P: Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. L: Who is this King of glory? P: The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. 9 *STATEMENT OF FAITH United Church of Christ We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit, God of our Savior Jesus Christ and our God, and to your deeds we testify: You call the worlds into being, create persons in your own image, and set before each one the ways of life and death. You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin. You judge people and nations by your righteous will declared through prophets and apostles. In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Savior, you have come to us and shared our common lot, conquering sin and death and reconciling the world to yourself. You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues and races. You call us into your church to accept the cost and joy of discipleship, to be your servants in the service of others, to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil, to share in Christ s baptism and eat at his table, to join him in his passion and victory. You promise to all who trust you forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace, courage in the struggle for justice and peace, your presence in trial and rejoicing, and eternal life in your realm which has no end. Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto you. Amen. THE PRAYERS & LORD S PRAYER (debts/debtors) Marlene Wells, Chuck Morrow, Harriet Christianson, Wayne Petersen, Stewart Lentz, Audrey Alton, Helen Swanson, Mike Farley Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
OFFERTORY You Are My All Worship Ensemble With Our Voices We ll Tell *PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Eternal God, you gather all your people as one in the body of Christ, our Lord. Unite us with all the people of every time and place who have lived by your Word and died by your love. Reassure us when we grieve that our loved ones are not lost to you. Prepare us for the day when we, too, join the grand celebration of life everlasting. Bless the gifts we offer this day and empower them to be good news for your people. Amen.
THE COMMUNION All Christians, regardless of denomination, tradition or age are welcome at the table of our Lord. When invited, please come forward down the center aisle. Receive a piece of bread (both wheat and gluten-free breads are available) and a cup from the tray (white is grape juice and red is wine). Children choosing not to commune are welcome to come forward and receive a blessing. Return to your seat using the outside aisle. If you are unable to come forward, communion will be brought to you. The Invitation to the Supper L: This is the table, not of the church, but of our Lord. It is to be made ready for those who love him and who want to love him more. So come, you who have much faith, and you who have little. Come, you who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time. Come, you who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come not because it is I who invites you, come for it is God s desire that we should meet him here. The Great Thanksgiving L: The Lord be with you. P: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts. P: We lift them up to the Lord. L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P: It is right to give our thanks and praise. L: We offer you praise,... The Words of Institution L: We rejoice in this holy meal as we proclaim the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Prayer of Consecration

NOTES
NOVEMBER 4, 2018 (B) TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SCRIPTURE LESSON: Joel 2:12-13 Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 12:28-34 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other ; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one s neighbor as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question.
