SCRIPTURE LESSON Deuteronomy 15:7-11 PSALM 126 (Cantor will introduce; congregation, please join in when directed) R L: When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. P: Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, The LORD has done great things for them. L: The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced. P: Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the watercourses in the Negeb. L: May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. P: Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves. R GOSPEL LESSON John 12:1-8 SERMON Rev. Dave Ostendorf

5 *HYMN Said Judas to Mary #210 *STATEMENT OF FAITH United Church of Canada L: We are not alone, we live in God s world. P: We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. THE PRAYERS & LORD S PRAYER (debts/debtors) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. OFFERTORY Lamb of God Worship Ensemble With Our Voices We ll Tell

6 *PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING God, giver of all blessings and gifts, we thank you once again for the opportunity to bring these gifts for the work of the church in the world. We are so grateful that you have blessed us to share. We pray that these gifts and our love for you might be multiplied countless times as we seek to create your beloved community. Amen. THE COMMUNION All Christians, regardless of denomination, tradition or age are welcome at the table of our Lord. When invited, please come forward down the center aisle. Receive a piece of bread (both wheat and gluten-free breads are available) and a cup from the tray (white is grape juice and red is wine). Children choosing not to commune are welcome to come forward and receive a blessing. Return to your seat using the outside aisle. If you are unable to come forward, communion will be brought to you. The Invitation to the Supper L: Beloved in Christ, this is the table of freedom, born of sacrifice. It is the table of plenty, born of our want for God. It is the table of fulfillment, born of our emptiness. We come to this table not because we must, but because we may. Not because we are fulfilled, but because we are empty, and in our emptiness we stand in need of God s mercy and assurance. All who seek to know God in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup are welcome at this holy table. The Great Thanksgiving L: The Lord be with you. P: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts. P: We lift them up to the Lord. L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P: It is right to give our thanks and praise. L: We come to this table... The Words of Institution L: We rejoice in this holy meal as we proclaim the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Prayer of Consecration

Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and send us forth into the world in courage and peace, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *HYMN O Christ, the Great Foundation #387 *COMMISSIONING As Mary lavishly honored Jesus, let us honor him with our lives. As Jesus called us to serve generously those in great need, let us give abundantly of our time and talent and treasure that all might know the loving, living gifts of God. 15 NOTES

16 APRIL 7, 2019 (C) FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT SCRIPTURE LESSON: Deuteronomy 15:7-11 If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be. Be careful that you do not entertain a mean thought, thinking, The seventh year, the year of remission, is near, and therefore view your needy neighbor with hostility and give nothing; your neighbor might cry to the LORD against you, and you would incur guilt. Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land. GOSPEL LESSON: John 12:1-8 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor? (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.
