1 November 2018 The Monthly Newsletter of Faith Lutheran Church P.O. Box Second Avenue North Isanti, MN Phone: (763) Heavenly Sunshine Preschool: (763) November 2018 From the Pastor Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much. Then Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house - Luke 19:8-9 When there s a need, we always find a way to meet it! Those words have been spoken by more people than I can remember in this congregation. They re also words that have proven true over and again. Faith is a congregation full of people who have been grabbed by the gospel of Jesus Christ so fully and completely that the freedom of that gospel drives the way you live! It drives the way you see all that God has entrusted you with. As a through-and-through Norwegian Minnesotan I don t like to talk about my own giving. But we re doing a stewardship campaign here, and it s hard to ask you to think about your giving if I won t talk about mine. I ve typically been a need-driven giver; or you might call me a squeaky wheel-driven giver. For instance, our recent youth trip ran a little over-budget, so I paid for one of the meals for the kids and put some gas in the van. But my regular giving is often sporadic. Sometimes I write a check. Sometimes I toss in some cash. And I never really keep track of anything. Every contribution helps the church, but my own way of giving doesn t really help the church make plans financially! That s why I ve committed to discipline and increase my giving in I can t express to you how much I appreciate your generous gifts to this congregation. They make our ministry possible. They make it possible for me to live and work in this place every day, and for that I m deeply grateful. In fact, I m truly grateful for all the ways you participate in the life of this church. Just this past month I ve seen this congregation as active and faithful as ever. We had a fun Fall Fest with a successful silent auction, delicious Swedish meatball dinner, and fantastic country gospel music! We marked 140 years of ministry with the joyful singing of old favorite hymns and the 1925 Swedish Augustana liturgy, some fond and fun stories told by our members, a visit from the bishop, and a tasty brunch! I took a group of twenty on our annual Fall Youth Retreat, and we had a great time. And our weekly Bible Study has been filling the library to capacity every Wednesday! These are just a few examples; I could give more. In the story of Zacchaeus, Jesus calls the tax collector down from the sycamore tree. Zacchaeus had become very wealthy by abusing his position and defrauding his neighbors, but when his house is visited by Jesus, his world changes. He gives half of his possessions to the poor and pays back all those he s cheated four times over! This isn t a man trying to make right on his sins; this is a man who has been so fully freed by the gospel that he s lost the distinction between what is his and what is his neighbor s he can only see all of it as a gift from the hand of God himself! When you see that kind of giving joyous, unselfconscious, free it s a remarkable thing. But when Jesus Christ gets hold of his people with the good news of his death and resurrection, that s the kind of freedom you can expect! Your gifts to this congregation make a difference. As we enter our Have Faith 2019 Stewardship Appeal, I ask you to prayerfully consider the difference your generosity makes. And consider the generous heart of God who has held nothing back from you not even his own Son. Pastor Cliff Hanson
2 Please feel free to bring in pictures and names of those we will be celebrating on November 4th All Saints Sunday: We remember those who have died in the faith in the past year, but also all the dead in Christ. On this day we invite you to remember loved ones who you've lost along the way, especially those who helped to pass the faith to you. "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died." ~1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 November 18th Stewardship Sunday HaveFaith2019 is our fall stewardship campaign, and Sunday, November 18 is commitment Sunday. On this Sunday, we're asking that everyone fill out a "commitment card" indicating your intended giving for As you prepare to fill out that card, you're invited to listen to the temple talks during worship over the three Sundays prior that lift up different areas of ministry and activity at Faith that we think is worth supporting. Remember, your gifts, even the small ones, make a big difference! Special Musical Event at Faith! Dan Bridston has worked for many years as a professional musician before retiring to Minnesota. Dawn Holmquist is a well known in Isanti as a wonderful singer and theater producer. We give thee but thine own, whate er the gift may be. All that we have is thine alone, a trust, O Lord, from thee.
5 Faith Lutheran Confirmation and Youth Fall retreat The trip started off with the van refusing to run and a call to a rental company. The 2018 Ford passenger van that we rented was pretty nice, I guess, but it lacked the character of our much more awesome van. We made stops at Palisade Head, the tallest cliff in MN, and Caribou Falls on the way up the North Shore. We had supper at Sven and Ole s in Grand Marais and then made our way up the Gunflint Trail and got settled in. Evening prayer around the campfire ended our Thursday and morning prayer outside the cabins began our Friday. Friday was filled with ziplines, high winds, pontoon rides, bologna sandwiches, not getting anywhere near the Canadian border (you can prove anything), and a hike up some spectacular cliffs. After supper, we closed the night with evening prayer and the kids preparing to be confirmed on October 28 had their final class. We had fun playing board games into the night and after a good night sleep (somewhat interrupted see other side!) we loaded the van and went home. Thanks to everyone who came along and helped make some wonderful memories!
6 Brother Bear! Around 4:00 am one of our cabins was visited by brother bear. He tried some grape juice, ate a bag of chips, exploded a can of parmesan cheese, and ran off with our trash can stuck on his head or paw, but not before taking a bite out of our scrabble game!
