Saturday Morning Workshops 01 Cooperative Games Craig Bell Director of Holston Presbytery Camp & Retreat Center, Inc. Banner Elk, NC Have you seen the fun torn out of a game? He envisions the church becoming passionate about their community for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Tony has captivated audiences around the world and now shares his hopes and dreams with us here in East Tennessee. 03 Crown Ministry: Stewardship for LIFE, not just wallets Jennifer Helton Certified Crown Ministry Trainer Crown Financial Ministries is a ten-week bible study that frees individuals and families financially so that they can experience God more completely. Jennifer will take you and your team through the steps of establishing an on-going financial study that will change your church for generations. Jennifer calls this study the best gift that leaders can give to their congregation. 04 The Gift of Touch Washing Feet Brenda Logan/Kathy Morgan Lay leaders within the Presbytery We all experience skin hunger, yet we live in an litigious age where people are reluctant to touch each other even to demonstrate the small gesture of comfort and warmth. We have forgotten that touch is life-giving: Jesus gift of touch healed and changed lives. In one instance, Jesus used touch as a simple, humble illustration His call to restoration and intimacy. He washed their feet. What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after
5 this. If I do not wash you, you have no part of Me. John 13: 7-8 The power of touch can change your life! Join us as we learn how to share Jesus touch with others and in the ministry of foot washing. 05 The Mission Field Downtown! Bob Lupton Founder and Director of FCS Urban Ministries, Atlanta, GA Bob has been building bridges to poverty areas for more than thirty years. His organization is based in inner city Atlanta and partners with the local church to help them understand how to bring the gospel to life among some of the last, least, and lost. With a staff of sixty, FCS constructs housing, operates businesses and education programs for at-risk children, and other services. Bob will help us think through how the suburban church can be much more than a handout. 06 Walking the Labyrinth Anne McKee Campus Minister, Maryville College The Labyrinth is an ancient form of walking prayer, which can help focus our own spiritual paths. The Rev. Anne McKee has been trained in helping people better understand this form of spiritual discipline. By attending this workshop you can learn more about its history and take a walk through a labyrinth at your own pace. 07 The Five Dynamics of Congregational Transformation Danny Murphy Associate General Presbyter, Trinity Presbytery, SC We know the famous line, Toto, I ve a feeling we re not in Kansas anymore. But are you ready to admit that it applies to the church? Things have changed, and so the way we do ministry much change as well. Unfortunately, many church leaders are reluctant to admit that the way we ve always done it is not as effective as it used to be, even in the face of diminished productivity. Consequently, some churches become satisfied with mere survival. However, this is not the way that it has to be. Discover the dynamics that have to be stimulated within the life of a congregation in order to bring about transformation. Come as a church team. 08 Men s Fraternity Bernie Ritterbush Director, Men s Ministry Network, Chattanooga, TN Are you looking for an effective, sustainable men s ministry one that is not just some flash-in-the-pan gathering? Over 1500 Men s Fraternity groups will gather across the country this week, proving that this approach to men s ministry works. Developed by the popular author and leader, Robert Lewis, these courses of study and this format will help men achieve what they seldom find: healthy, redemptive friendships. Lewis has developed three teaching series that touch on what men need most to talk about, but never have the chance. The format frees men to engage the topic and directs them to unpack it together. Come learn the principles that will make your men s ministry flourish. 09 Get On The Bus! Susan Smith Director, Holston Area Resource Center, Holston Presbytery Looking for Bible study resources? You ve got options! Discover appealing tools that will challenge your people towards a more Christ-centered life. For groups large and small, for personal study the road is refreshing and exciting. Come along! 10 Managing Conflict in the Church Michael Stanfield Associate Pastor, Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church Where two or more are gathered in the name of Christ there will be conflict! It is inevitable. Jesus himself said, Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword (Matt 9:34). Being a member of the Household of Faith requires our best efforts to be honest, authentic, conscientious Disciples of Christ; and that will create conflict. The key is not to seek to resolve the conflict but rather to seek in a loving manner to manage it. This workshop will suggest a theology of conflict as well as theoretical and practical tips for managing conflict in a congregation. 11 Who Are You? Margaret Suttle Associate Pastor, Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, Fair Oaks, CA Throughout our lives we are identified in different ways; whose child we are, our position in the family, what we do. In this seminar we will discuss who we are, why we are here, and how our lives can move from success to significance.
6 12 Building an Effective Church Website Wes Williams Director of Online Project Management, Scripps Networks (afternoon also) Learn how to get started and make the most of your church s website by finding untapped resources. Your website can connect you to the presbytery, guide prospective members, and keep your congregation up to date all on a dime. Wes specializes in translating geek to English and back again to help technical and non-technical departments communicate. Saturday Afternoon Workshops 13 Recreation with Youth Craig Bell Director of Holston Presbytery Camp & Retreat Center, Inc. Banner Elk, NC Youth Council, Pastors, Children s Leaders, Youth Directors and anyone else who wants to have fun and learn at the same time.come to this workshop! We will look at (i.e. PLAY ) some new high energy games, small group activities, games with younger and older youth, quiet and active games. And do them without a lot of preparation, elaborate props or a huge space. 14 Blended Worship West Breedlove Director of Music, Cedar Springs Presbyterian, Knoxville, TN Can you really have the best of both worlds? What does it mean to blend the old and the new? There is an art and a science to blending music and worship styles so that they truly complement and compliment one another. 15 Catch the Vision Tony Campolo Professor Emeritus, Eastern University Catch the vision of what today s church can be from our special guest Dr. Tony Campolo - preacher, media commentator, author and founder of Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education (EAPE), as Tony engages us with his wit, wisdom and his wealth of experiences. He envisions the church becoming passionate about their community for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Tony has captivated audiences around the world and now shares his hopes and dreams with us here in East Tennessee. 16 Renewal as a Way of Life. Jim Logan Pastor of Bread of Life Christian Ministry, Charlotte What are the principles and habits of congregational renewal? How can we maintain an attitude and spirit of freshness and urgency? Come explore with Jim the signs of healthy churches and the key elements that keep them that way. 17 Short Term Missions: Getting Started Danny Dotson National Director of Son Servants, Chattanooga, TN Danny has over 15 years experience leading his short-term mission organization, Son Servants. Every summer they take over 1500 people to third-world countries and poverty regions of the U.S. including Mexico, Belize, Nicaragua, Jamaica, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Denver (inner city), Jacksonville (inner city). Recently they have also organized hurricane relief trips. If your church has inklings about short-term missions but you re not sure where to start, then spend a little time with one of the most knowledgeable mission leaders in the region. 18 Strategic Ministry Planning: Transforming Vision into Action Danny Murphy Associate General Presbyter, Trinity Presbytery, SC So you have a vision but wonder how to bring real shape to it? We need to become strategic planners. Like Nehemiah, Christian leaders must take that which the Lord puts on their hearts to the implementation stage. Nehemiah rebuilt the wall not only because he could teach, but also because he could translate vision into action. Strategic ministry planning mobilizes believers to engage their ministry environment, clarify objectives, and quantify the action steps in pursuit of fulfilling the Great Commission. Discover the essential elements of the strategic ministry planning process so that you can start transforming vision into action, today. Come as a church team.
7 19 Youth Culture Today Rocky Rausch Chief Operating Officer, YCM Youth Ministries, Chattanooga, TN Every people group has its own language and culture--so too with American suburban teenagers. When we learn to speak their language and culture, we connect. We earn the right to be heard. This workshop will approach teens, applying the same principles of reaching any population, learning the touchstones of their lives media, music, critical issues, and family dynamics. What do they face every day and what are the best resources available to meet them on their turf, and to invite them to grow spiritually? Come find out. 20 Gummie Bears and Matchbox Cars Susan Smith Director, Holston Area Resource Center, Holston Presbytery We have the responsibility of teaching children to be worshipers. We will look at helpful resources and share ideas from and for families and church families. We ll address this issue from the perspective of both staff and parents. 21 Small Churches Called to Thrive Diana Stephen Associate for Network Support: Rural and Small Church Ministries: Louisville, KY Every congregation is called by God to engage in ministry and mission. This workshop will explore the uniqueness of the smaller membership church and the ways that God s call can move a congregation from simply surviving to thriving. 22 More Than Potlucks and Pinochle Margaret Suttle Associate Pastor, Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, Fair Oaks, CA Jesus commandment, Go and make disciples, should be a vital part of every Older Adult Ministry. Activities and programs must never be an end in themselves, but a means to reach the world for Christ. This workshop will explore St. Patrick s method of evangelism with the Celtic people and will generate discussion as to how his method is appropriate today. 23 Wes Williams Director of Online Project Management, Scripps Networks Building an Effective Church Website Learn how to get started and make the most of your church s website by finding untapped resources.
