1 Vol. 11, No. 7 July 2015 The Jubilee Prayer Commemorating the 800th Anniversary of the Order of Preachers God, Father of mercy, who called your servant Dominic de Guzman to set out in faith as an itinerant pilgrim and a preacher of grace, as we prepare to celebrate the Jubilee of the Order we ask you to pour again into us the Spirit of the Risen Christ, that we might faithfully and joyfully proclaim the Gospel of peace, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. 2 From the Provincial Promoter s Desk Fr. Bede Shipps, O.P. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Saint Dominic, This week has meant several boxes of lettuce from the garden, and the fresh article (butter crunch) is quite wonderful. Grapes are getting big on the vine; basil is sizing up, and lots of flowers that were seeds in flats a year ago are blooming freely. Even after more than fifty years of gardening, I never cease to be amazed as the little dots of green appear in the seedbeds, and then become something beautiful or tasty or both. A gardener or farmer is working to Fr. Bede Shipps, O.P., Provincial Promoter help that process happen, and looks for results over time. Scripture repeatedly employs imagery from garden or field or vineyard to speak of the growth that God makes possible in our lives, and of the fruitfulness which God looks for and requires of us. "I planted, Apollos watered," writes Saint Paul, "but it is God who gives the growth." The prophet Isaiah describes a vineyard lovingly planted and tended by God, but unproductive, a disappointment. The Lord Jesus even speaks of himself as the Vine, and of us as his branches. So it's good to ask ourselves, "Am I giving myself to the prayer, conversion, and daily faithfulness that will make for real growth in the Lord? Am I choosing to give of myself to help others in my chapter to gain spiritual growth? Do my decisions help my priory or chapter to be more truly one mind and heart in God? Am I pondering the truth and sharing the truth, so that together we may give holy witness, drawing others to live with Jesus as Lord?" Cardinal Newman somewhere observes that growth is the evidence of life. If we're not growing, we are in fact moving backwards. As the Church in this season uses green vestments precisely to point out the growth intended with the help of Word, Spirit, and sacraments, let's pray for one another to be indeed growing, faithful, and fruitful in the Lord. Please continue to pray for all the preparations for our provincial congress in November, and please plan to attend if you can. Good things happen when O.P.'s come together to concentrate on living out the four pillars of prayer, study, community, and apostolate. All manner of volunteers will be needed to help with liturgy, registration, and other aspects of our meeting. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact your regional president and Marianne Jablonski. Wishing you every blessing in our Dominican Family, Fr. Bede St. Mary Magdalen Protectress of the Order, Pray for us. July 22 Brother Tonto & Cappa Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. Page 2
3 Novena Prayer for St. Dominic s Feast Day The Feast of St. Dominic is August 8 th so start this Novena on July 31 st. Beloved Father Dominic, you humbly followed in the footsteps of the poor Christ as a devoted Watchdog of the Lord, preaching by day and praying by night. Like Jesus you converted sinners, healed the sick and raised the dead to life. To teach sound doctrine you founded an Order of preachers. To exemplify perfect charity and self-sacrifice you raised up an army of martyrs. To perpetuate prayer in the Church you raised up a legion of cloistered nuns. To minister to my family, friends, parish and Dominican community, you inspired me. Gentle Father, grant me the favor I ask (name it), and the grace to live and die a strong and prayerful Catholic. Good Father Dominic, help me! Pray 3 Hail Mary s Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. Page 3
