1 Vol. 11, No. 11 November 2015 Plenary Indulgence for Dominican Jubilee We are pleased to inform you that His Holiness Pope Francis has granted the possibility of receiving the plenary indulgence to all the faithful participating in the Jubilee celebrations that will take place both internationally and in each province and to all those who will participate in a pilgrimage to the churches and chapels of the Dominican family. The terms and conditions to receive the indulgence are described in the document sent by the Apostolic Penitentiary. - See more at: -indulgence-dominican-jubilee#sthash.rmnkxjja.dpuf In This Issue Plenary Indulgence 1 Indulgence Definition 2 Provincial Promoter s Letter 3 Prayer Requests 10 Congress Flyer 5 Te Deum 6 800th Anniversary Pilgrimage 7 De Profundis 8 Bro. 2 Plenary Indulgence for Dominican Jubilee General Remarks on Indulgences The following "General remarks on Indulgences" from Gift of the Indulgence summarizes, therefore, the usual conditions given in the Church's law: 1. This is how an indulgence is defined in the Code of Canon Law (can. 992) and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1471): "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints". 2. In general, the gaining of indulgences requires certain prescribed conditions (below, nn. 3, 4), and the performance of certain prescribed works To gain indulgences, whether plenary or partial, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. [N.B. Thus, one must be a Catholic in communion with the Pope, i.e. not excommunicated or in schism.] 4. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; have sacramentally confessed their sins; receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. 5. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence. 3 From the Provincial Promoter s Desk Fr. Bede Shipps, O.P. Dear Brothers and Sisters in St. Dominic, It's exciting to have the Jubilee for the Order's 800th anniversary so close at hand, especially as it begins with our own Congress and the visit from Father Cadore. Just today word arrived that a plenary indulgence has been granted, under the usual conditions, for those taking part in the Jubilee celebrations. There is a lot of hustle and bustle Fr. Bede Shipps, O.P., Provincial Promoter in store as last minute arrangements for the Congress, its talks and liturgies, etc., all have to be brought up to speed. So please pray for all who are working so hard to make our days together in College Park a "season of refreshment," an opportunity to stir up into flame the grace given us as members of the Dominican Family. Life has lots of interesting moments. On my way up to a meeting in Emmitsburg, Maryland, the other day, I started chatting with my neighbor at the Waffle House counter, and talk moved from the fall foliage to our families, and from there to literary and dramatic resources that speak about the things that matter the most. (My interlocutor makes his living doing setwork and lighting in the theater.) A brief list of plays and short stories emerged in the conversation--- -Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" and "The Skin of Our Teeth"; the movie "Babette's Feast," which is really a parable of selfemptying, Eucharistic love; the tragic Eugene O'Neill play "Long Day's Journey Into Night," which chronicles a family's devastation by untruth, failure to love, and addiction; O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi;" and a number of others. As we are called to evangelize, such resources can be a bridge to people who have grown up without a clear link to Christ and his Church. So can such websites as Rose Folsom's "The Virtue Connection," as do the sorts of vigils which our student brothers in Washington have made so beautiful and fruitful during the seasons of Advent and Lent, and on the vigil of All Saints. Please pray for hearts to be touched by such outreach. On a more mundane level, in recent weeks I've had to bring inside the guppies that kept our little garden fountain clear of mosquitoes during the summer. (Think of the transfer as a guppy Dunkirk.) All this project involves are efforts to have the right food, water quality, and so on. Yet the whole routine of guppy rescue and care is only a faint shadow of God's care for us. He makes us not pets, but rather his dear children and friends. The Father has sent his only begotten Son as our wisdom and sanctification, who willingly laid down his life to deliver us from sin and death and hell, and to make of us a new creature in the Spirit. Our food is not Petsmart fish flakes, but the Bread of Life, the very Body and Blood of Jesus crucified and risen. The loving Providence of God surrounds us and bears us up at every moment. We have reason to offer continual thanks for so great a love showered upon us. Blessings to you all as we begin the Order's 800th Anniversary Jubilee, and as we pause as a nation to render thanks to our just and merciful God. Assuring you of my prayers as I ask for yours, Your brother, Fr. Bede Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. Page 3

4 Prayer Requests for the 2015 Congress As you can see, I am casting the nets pretty wide in an effort to collect prayer intentions from Dominican Laity around the Province (and farther), in order for us to unite in praying for all those commended to us, as the 2015 Congress meets November 4 to 6, and the Jubilee Year for the Order begins on November 7th. So, please copy this note to others in your chapters. Regional Presidents, please copy this note to chapter presidents in your region ASAP. They need to get it on Saturday the 31st, the sooner in the day the better. A notebook with the intentions either inscribed or printed will be in the adoration chapel at the Congress. In order to give time to get the notebook suitably prepared, I need to get the intentions sent to me, Fr. Bede (historygardener@yahoo.com), by Sunday night, November 1st. (Obviously there will still be an opportunity for folks to write in further requests when we all arrive at the Congress.) If you are sending in a prayer request or intention, you may include or omit your own name. If you want your intention(s) to be listed together with others from your chapter, then please make sure the intention has your name (and whether or not to include it in the notebook), the name of your chapter, and the city or town where your chapter meets. In this way, Dominican Laity who are unable to be with us in College Park can still be joined with us in prayer before the Lord. May our Triune God bless you all as we celebrate the great company of the saints, who are united in thanks and praise around the throne of God and the Lamb. Your happy promoter, Fr. Bede Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. Page 4
