MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL It seems unbelievable that are already the end of the first Half Term of the academic year. Time has flown but it has been a very busy time for everyone. The boys are settling in well to the Priestmead campus: their movement around the site, and behaviour, is exemplary. The boys have been working hard towards the first assessment point of the year, and sat a number of tests and assessments in the last week. The results will enable us to monitor your sons' progress and make sure they have the correct interventions to help them make progress. Our staff are running a number of interventions to help the boys: English as an Additional Language classes during the school day and on Saturdays; Saturday sessions for Year 11; subject sessions before school, at lunch time and after school; and a full timetable of sessions for Year 11 over the Half Term break. Your co-operation with ensuring attendance to these sessions is vital if the boys are to make the progress of which they are capable. I am looking forward to Target Setting Day, during which you will have the opportunity to help enable your sons to make the best possible progress in their education. I was pleased, on Friday, to welcome staff from the Museum of London, for a workshop about Windrush, as part of our events for Black History Month. Different groups of History students took part in a lively discussion and presentation concerning the issues faced by that generation. Also, boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in an anti-bullying performance, workshop and question session in which the negative impacts of bullying were explored and tested. After Half Term there will be special assemblies on antibullying, online safety, British Values and personal hygiene, running alongside our liturgical themes. On a sad note, please remember in your prayers the family of Chloe Quilliec, a Year 10 girl at our partner school, St Thomas More Catholic, who tragically passed away last week after a lengthy illness. Also, Fr Eric Powell, a Salvatorian priest who worked at Salvatorian College many years ago, whose funeral took place in Ireland last week. Their names will be added to our Book of Remembrance, in preparation for All Souls' Day. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them; may they rest in peace. Amen. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. 2 WORDS OF THE DAY Monday Insouciant Adjective Showing a lack of concern. The insouciant waitress did not seem to care that Matt had to wait over one hour for his food. Gamedevelopers sometime seem irresponsibly insouciant about their portrayal of violence. Tuesday Cavernous Adjective Like a cavern in size, shape or atmosphere; vast. Over 10,000 fans filled the cavernous concert hall to see their favourite band. Sarah picked up her clothes and put them back in her cavernous, walk-in wardrobe. Wednesday Susceptible Adjective Likely or liable to be influenced or harmed by a particular thing. Many people get the flu vaccine so they will be less susceptible to the virus. Because Jane feels so insecure, she is highly susceptible to peer pressure. Thursday Ingratiate Verb Bring oneself into favour with someone by flattering or trying to please them. The child attempted to ingratiate herself with the teacher to avoid any further sanctions. The candidate tried to ingratiate himself with voters by promising to reduce taxes. Friday Confound Verb Cause surprise or confusion in (someone), especially by not according with their expectations. Sometimes, I believe my sat.nav. is out to confound me! GOSPEL REFLECTION Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) Sunday 21 st October 2018 A reading from the Gospel of Mark 10:35-45 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognise as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. The context of this Gospel passage is Jesus prediction of his passion and death. We see Apostles ignoring the serious words of Jesus. They do not seem to be able to cope with what they perceive to be extremely negative ideas and instead they become preoccupied with their own ambitions. We do this ourselves all the time. We find it hard to cope with certain serious issues and so we bury our head in the sand in the hope that the difficulties will simply go away. Our failure to face up to reality can make things much worse even than they were before. We should not ignore the extent of James and John s ambition. They do not merely want to get to heaven, they want the very highest places in the Kingdom, they want to sit at the left and right of Jesus when he ascends to glory. Jesus takes them seriously and asks them if they can drink the cup that he is to drink. They blithely respond that they can, but they only respond like this because they have no conception of what Jesus really means. When Jesus responds that they surely will drink the cup that he has to drink he is referring to that fact that almost all the Apostles will die a martyr s death. We all live messy and inconsistent lives, we are not always able to live up to the strictures of the Gospel. It is not a question so much of following all the rules but adopting the right attitudes. Being a true disciple is about assuming a Gospel mindset. It is as much about a way of thinking as a way of doing. Like James and John, we have to come to the realisation that there is more in the life of an honest Christian than worldly ambition alone. Like them we are slow learners, but at least we do know that true greatness is only to be found in the service of others.

The Madonna of the Meadow (Giovanni Bellini ) BLACK HISTORY MONTH The learning team from the Museum of London visited Salvatorian College last week to provide a workshop on the Windrush Generation. Shangoo shared his unique story with students. He was educated by Catholic priests in Trinidad and Tobago and came to Great Britain, like so many other immigrants from the British Empire, as the British government advertised for workers to rebuild the country after World War Two. The workshop provided valuable context for our historians and was a celebration of the diverse and multi-cultural society we live in. At one point, pupils were asked to stand up if they were born, or had parents born in another country. As you can see from the photographs, we are a diverse community, and this event allowed us to celebrate that diversity. HARROW CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to the following boys who represented Salvatorian College at the Harrow Cross Country on Wednesday 17th October.

Please encourage friends and family, if shopping in Waitrose, to give their green token to this worthy cause. Mrs Watt YEAR 9 FOOTBALL LEAGUE Salvatorian College Vs. Whitefriars School (8-3) The Salvatorian Boys did it again with another storming victory, beating Whitefriars School 8-3 at home in Bannisters sports ground. The boys made a positive start with lovely intricate passing getting the ball in behind Whitefriars defensive line on numerous occasions creating many goal-scoring chances. Kyle Norton opened the game s score line by driving fearlessly at the defence, beating them with his pace, striking the ball low and powerfully which was just too fast for their keeper. Weather conditions became treacherous as the half went on. This led to visible difficulties: a long ball was played over the top by Whitefriars player and a miskick of the ball resulted in the striker being one-on-one with the keeper, levelling the score at 1-1. The boys knew they had to get one back, so from kick off they decided to hit long balls into the channels making it hard for the defence. Salvatorian boys won a corner from pressing as a team, which resulted in winning a corner kick with a beautiful delivery, which Jarrell was on the end of to tap it in to make it 2-1 just before half time. The boys then countered straight with a lovely finish from Isaiah, with a low driven shot that went in the bottom right hand corner of the goal. At the start of the second half the boys came out hungry and eager to get more goals. A miskicked ball by the Whitefriars keeper came straight to Kyle who lobbed the keeper effortlessly to put the boys back into a comfortable lead. The boys were really confident at this point, passing and moving the ball; however, Whitefriars did intercept a pass and punished our boys to make it 4-2. This gave the wakeup call they needed to try to re-establish the 2-goal advantage. The boys then started to play a much simpler game by finding a pass and moving into more space. Next, from a corner, Denzel delayed his run into the box and, standing at the edge of the D, the ball was drilled straight into his path. On his first touch, he hit the ball into the top right hand corner of the goal. It was a superb finish! Our boys wanted more so they pressed as a whole team. Then the ball was squared across the box into the path of James Liba, who placed the ball comfortably in the back of the net. Whitefriars did get one back from a corner kick with a scrabble in the middle of the box, which ended in the back of the net. By this time the game was well and truly over. With two minutes remaining the Salvatorian team played a long ball over the top, which was misjudged by the Whitefriars centre back, leaving Isaiah one-on-one with the keeper. He slotted into

the bottom right corner to end the game at 8-3: a well-deserved win. Goal Scorers: 1) Kyle Norton 2 2) Jarrell Gerald 3) Isaiah Gwisai 2 4) Denzel Manu-Danquah 5) James Liba 2 Man of the Match: KYLE NORTON Manager: Mr Ezeigwe PERSONAL ORGANISATION It is our mission to ensure all boys at Salvatorian College leave us with the skills to be effective leaders of good influence. Leadership begins with self-discipline and setting a good example to others. A basic skill, that all boys should have acquired by now is being organised ready to learn. This means having the correct equipment, at all times, as set out in their Journal. Unfortunately, some pupils are relying on last minute calls home to parents / carers to bring in equipment, PE kit etc. Please ensure your son is aware that it is his responsibility to come prepared, every day, for lessons. POST-16 PROVISION Year 11 are currently making applications for their Post 16 education. For many this will be to St Dominic s or St George s Sixth Form Colleges in order to study A Levels. For others a vocational course or an apprenticeship will be the way forward. There are now more apprenticeships available due to a Government drive. However, awareness of these courses is low and their benefits not widely understood by pupils and parents / carers. It is never too early to start exploring potential careers and the qualifications your son will need to achieve his goals. If an apprenticeship may suit your son s learning style and intended career path, please have a look at the following website and the parents information pack for further details: /10/Parent-Pack-October-2018.pdf If you have any questions relating to careers or future qualification pathways, please get in touch with Mr Cooper, who will be happy to advise. GEOGRAPHY REVISION GUIDES The Geography Department has a number of GCSE revision guides in stock for your son to buy in order to help him revise at home and be successful in his exam. A pack is priced at 5 and contains a revision guide and revision book that they can work through. It would cost 10 to buy these online or via a bookseller, so we are providing a 50% discount. To purchase, please give 5 cash to your son who will be able to buy it through the Geography Department. Proof of purchase will be given. MIDDLESEX CUP Salvatorian College 2-3 Vyners School Salvatorian bowed out in the second round of the Middlesex Cup in a tough game against Vyners School. Although missing a couple of key players through unavailability, Salvatorian College took the lead through Ethan Ferguson, who was in good goal scoring form. They led 1-0 going into the break. The home team had a number of other opportunities to extend their lead but failed to do so in the opening half. Vyners came out strongly at the start of the second half and quickly equalised. This shook the Salvatorian boys who not recover quickly enough, conceding another two goals in a short space of time. The Salvatorian team regrouped and put a strong performance in the last 15 minutes. They pulled a goal back with one minute to go but unfortunately time ran out for them and they exit the competition. Man of the Match: Oliver Kiely

YEAR 9 FOOTBALL Hatch End 2-3 Salvatorian (Goals from James Liba x2, Kyle Norton Salvatorian's Year 9 football team kicked off their season with a 3-2 win against Hatch End. There was an excellent team spirit and this showed through the performance. Two goals from James Liba and one from GKyle Norton meant that Year 9 have maximum points from the first round. Man of the match - Vithus Ragavan YEAR 11 FOOTBALL Canon's High 2-3 Salvatorian A last minute goal by Ethan Ferguson sealed an amazing performance by the Year 11 team after fighting back twice from being behind. The Salvatorian College team were missing a number of key players who won the Harrow Schools championship last year and beaten finalists in the Middlesex Cup. Ethan Rafter, Johnny Allotey and Sam White-Kugler stepped up from Year 10 to help secure the first win of the season in front of a partisan Canon's crowd. Johnny Allotey equalised late in the first half and then Arkel Boyd scored a sensational second equaliser in a tight and tense game before a superb winner from Ethan Ferguson sent the away team to into wild celebrations. Man of the Match - Jack Woolcombe YEAR 11 RUGBY Year 11 Rugby v Enfield Grammar School (Middlesex Cup) Salvo's Year 10/11 were ready for to face tough opposition in the form of Enfield Grammar school but unfortunately they called 50 minutes before kick off to say that they could not field a team. Salvo progress to a quarter final against Fulham Boys school. YEAR 7 TRANSITION PROJECT Miss Donnelly ran a transition project, asking the Year 7 boys how they felt about their transition to Salvatorian College. A selection of their fantastic output is shown below. The first stage in my life was primary. It was my first proper school. People were separated into the football people, the girly girls, the clever kids and the people who were just normal. As I grew older in primary, I began to learn that I was not going to be with these people forever. It began to grow on me that my friends might not be there anymore. Anyway, back to primary school: it was a lot of fun in St John s and it was a great school. Inside of me I felt I didn t fit in that well, and I was not unhappy when realising that, after Year 6, I was going to secondary school. After Year 6 was over, I was not complete with the transition, however my mum helped me a lot in realising that, at secondary school, there would be new opportunities and friends. I hoped she was right. By the end of the summer holidays, I forgot all about secondary school and just focused on me. I was thinking about how life would be harder at secondary school, in addition to Wednesday maths tuition and also religious classes on Saturday. I began to realise that all of these people were actually helping me to have a brighter and better future. My first day at Salvatorian College was amazing. I met new friends and learned new things I never knew before. At Salvatorian College I felt as if I belonged and that it was the place for me. My mum was right all along. After all the stress and the stage of being not sure, I finally found a place. Salvatorian College helped me find new friends and new opportunities to expand my education to another level. Now I am in Salvatorian College where I belong, the classes are great and the teachers are even greater. The school mission is to embrace the teachings of Christ and foster greater knowledge and love of the Divine Saviour. We will develop exemplary manners and a commitment to education. I will uphold our school mission and be the best pupil I can be, to ensure that my time at Salvatorian College will be spectacular. I picture my future at Salvatorian College to be an amazingly wonderful time. My goals in the future are to pass my GCSEs with good grades and make my parents proud. Hopefully, in the future I will have made more new friends and also brand new

opportunities waiting for me as I leave Salvatorian College. The objects in my box are mostly from my primary school due to the fact that I have yet to make new memories at Salvatorian. The objects I have are a t-shirt which I wore when I sang on stage for the Children in Need choir. It was an amazing moment and it will always be remembered. I also have a hand-made pencil case I made by saving to make a pencil case for my stationary. Another memory from primary school was when I went to PGL. It was such an amazing experience where I learnt new activities and faced some of my fears. We did canoeing and I went on the giant swing. I had so much fun and I hope to visit again. The difference from primary to secondary is that my primary was a Church of England School and my secondary is a Catholic School. Therefore I have to change the way I do things. Salvatorian College has made me feel welcome and I really appreciate it. My passion is Art. I represent that by making a cross showing and representing Salvatorian College. It has the phrase become great before God on it and also has the word Catholic. Week Commencing
