1 The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost and The Ninth Sunday of Matthew The After-feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos Apostle Thaddeus of the Seventy; Martyrs Bassa, Theognios, Agapios and Pistos of Edessa; Venerable Abraham of Smolensk and his Disciple, Venerable Ephraim Sunday, August 21, 2016 Tone 8; Eothinon 9 Apolytikion of the Resurrection (Tone 8) From the heights Thou didst descend, O compassionate One, and Thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that Thou might deliver us from passion; Thou art our life and our Resurrection, O Lord, glory to Thee. Apolytikion of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Tone 1) In thy birth-giving, O Theotokos, thou didst keep and preserve virginity; and in thy falling-asleep thou hast not forsaken the world; for living thou wast translated, being the Mother of Life. Wherefore, by thine intercessions, deliver our souls from death. Apolytikion of our Patron, Michael the Archangel (Tone 2) O ye foremost of the heavenly hosts, we beseech thee, though we are unworthy, pray that we may be encompassed with a shadow of thine unearthly glory; preserving us who kneel and cry endlessly: Deliver us from oppression since ye are the prince of the highest powers. Kontakion of the Transfiguration of Christ (Tone 7) Verily, the Theotokos, who is ever watchful in intercessions, who is never rejected, neither tomb nor death could control. But being the Mother of Life, He Who dwelt in her ever-virgin womb did translate her to life. Daily Readings THE EPISTLE (for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost) Make vows to the Lord Thy God and perform them. In Judah God is known; His Name is great in Israel. The Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians (3:9-17)

2 Brethren, we are God s fellow workers; you are God s field, God s building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay or straw, each man s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God s temple, God will destroy him; for God s temple is holy, and you are that temple. THE GOSPEL (for the Ninth Sunday of Matthew) The Reading of the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew (14:22-34) At that time, Jesus made the Disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. And after He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone, but the Disciples boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. But when the Disciples saw Jesus walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost And they cried out for fear. But immediately He spoke to them, saying, Take heart, it is I; have no fear. And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is Thee, bid me come to Thee on the water. He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, Lord, save me Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught him, saying to him, O man of little faith, why did you doubt? And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, Truly, Thou art the Son of God. And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 3 On August 21 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we continue to celebrate the Dormition of the Most-holy Theotokos, and we commemorate the holy Apostle Thaddeus of the Seventy. Verses O Thaddeus What other fair laurel shall I weave thee, Than to call thee the Word s initiate and eyewitness? Thaddeus on the twenty-first flew up out of life. After His glorious Resurrection and Ascension, the Lord sent Thaddeus to his birthplace of Edessa, in fulfillment of His promise to Prince Avgar, which He made when He sent him the napkin with the imprint of His face (see Aug. 16). By kissing this napkin, Avgar was healed of his leprosy, though a little remained on his face. When Thaddeus visited Avgar, Christ s Apostle instructed him in the true Faith and then baptized him. When the baptized Avgar came up out of the water, the remaining leprosy fell from him. Glorifying God, Prince Avgar desired that his people should come to the knowledge of the true God and glorify Him. Hearing the Apostle s words about Christ and seeing their miraculouslyhealed prince, the people of Edessa cast away their idols and their unclean living, embraced the Christian faith and were baptized. Thaddeus preached the Gospel throughout Syria and Phoenicia, and entered into rest in the Lord in Beirut. On this day, we also commemorate the Martyrs Bassa and her sons Theognios, Agapios, and Pistos of Edessa; Venerable Abraham of Smolensk and his disciple, Venerable Ephraim. By their intercessions, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen. A Note Regarding Holy Communion Since we understand Communion to mean that we have all things in common, sharing an identical Faith, only those who are members of the Orthodox Church and who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting and recent Confession may participate in Holy Communion. (We invite all, however, to partake of the blessed bread which is distributed at the dismissal.) Please see the Pastor for inquiries on how to become a member. 9 یا إخوة, نحن شركاء في العمل مع الله, وأنتم حقل الله وبناء الله. وبقدر ما أوتیت من نعمة الله, كباني ماھر, وضعت الا ساس وآخر یبني علیھ. فلین تبھ كل واحد كیف یبني. فما من أحد یستطیع أن یضع أساسا غیر الا ساس الذي وضعھ الله, أي یسوع المسیح. فكل من بنى على ھذا الا ساس بناء من ذھب أو فضة أو حجارة كریمة أو خشب أو قش أو تبن, فسیكون عملھ بی نا, ویوم الرب یعلن ھ, لان النار في ذلك الیوم تكشف ھ وتمتحن قیمة عمل كل واحد. فمن بقي عمل ھ الذي بناه نال أجر ه, ومن احترق عمل ھ خسر أجر ه. أما ھو فسیخلص, ولكن كمن ینجو من خلال النار. أ م ا تعلمون أن كم ھیكل الله, وأن روح الله.یسكن فیكم فمن أفسد ھیكل الله أھلكھ الله, لان ھیكل الله مقدس, وھذا الھیكل ھو أنتم الا نجیل بشارة القدیس متى فصل شریف من في ذلك الزمان:أمر یسوع تلامیذه أن یركبوا القارب ویسبقوه إلى الشاطي المقابل حتى یصرف الجموع. ولما صرفھم صعد إلى الجبل لیصلي في العزلة. وعندما جاء المساء كان ھناك وحده. أما القارب فكان في وسط البحر وكانت الا مواج تلطمھ, لان الریح كانت مخالفة لھ. وعند آخر اللیل, جاء یسوع إلى تلامیذه ماشیا على البحر. فلما رآه تلامیذه ماشیا على البحر ارتعبوا وقالوا: "ھذا شبح" وصرخوا من شدة الخوف. فقال لھم یسوع في الحال: "ثقوا أنا ھو, لا تخافوا" فقال لھ بطرس: "إن كنت أنت ھو, یا سید, فمرني أن أجيء إلیك على الماء." فا جابھ یسوع: "تعال." فنزل بطرس من القارب ومشى على الماء آتیا إلى یسوع. ولكنھ خاف عندما رأى شدة الریح فا خذ یغرق, فصرخ: "نجني, یا سید" فمد یسوع یده في الحال وأمسكھ وقال لھ: "یا قلیل الا یمان, لماذا شككت " ولما صعدا إلى القارب ھدأت الریح. فسجد لھ الذین كانوا في القارب وقالوا: بالحقیقة أنت ابن اللھ" وعبروا إلى بر جنیسارت. ملاحظة بخصوص تناول القربان المقدس إن مفھومنا لتناول القربان یعنى عمومیة المشاركة فیھ لذوى العقیدة الواحدة الا إن المشاركة في سر القربان المقدس ھنا مقتصر فقط على أعضاء الكناي س الارثوذكسیة والذین یحضرون أنفسھم بالصلاة والصوم والاعتراف منذ فترة قریبة (وعلى كل حال فا ننا ندعو الجمیع للمشاركة فى الخبز المقدس الذى یوزع عند إنتھاء مراسیم القداس.) رجاء مراجعة الكاھن.إذا رغبت أن تصبح عضوا.فى الكنیسة الارثوذكسیة
